I came up with an idea for a World Building project, for my GASP gaming club. Gaming Association of Southwestern Pennsylvania is what GASP stands for and it's based in Pittsburgh, Pa. I was tired of building worlds by myself, and wanted some help. Sadly, not everyone was as dedicated as me, and most of the work fell to me and one other dedicated designer. I seem to like world building more than most people I know...
The idea is to make a flat world made entirely out of 200 mile Hexes that were isolated from each other for 5,000 since the creation. The setting is "finished" during the 5,001st year. It is up to the GM to figure out how the chaos unfolds after the Great Uniting, when each Realm realizes that the "End of the World" is now a new land.
Each designer represents a God that is given free reign (with some limitations) to design the hex as they see fit. The Uber-God reigns over all the United Realms (I'm that guy, since I came up with the idea and do the work no one else wants to do...)
What this isolation of hexes does, is allow new hexes to be added whenever, because of the isolation, world builders don't have to worry about their neighbors. So entirely new and imaginative hexes can be contrived and added whenever. I thought it was a good idea. :)
When the designer is "finished" with their hex, it is added randomly with the help of dice to the map that is already made of the previous hexes.
For a better outline, check out the Laws of Creation.

I'm the Knight of Frost on those forums.
The first group of guys bailed on me at the end (it takes a lot of work to build a world).
This is my attempt to get new blood to make new hexes, and to help finish the previous ones that were dumped in my lap to finish.
Any takers?
I think I would kill for one good World Builder to sign up to help with this project, hehe.
I think I would beat up someone for one half-assed World Builder to help with the project. :)
Seriously though, it would be cool to get some help with my little project.
Thanks.
I'm interested in this. I don't have a ton of free time (I'm working on Tephra under a deadline, and I'm designing a whole new system! Ahhh!), but this seems like it'd be a fun little thing to do on the side. Designing a hex I can't imagine taking too long. It's an awesome idea, definitely.
I've tried doing collaborative things in the past, but world designers so typically just want to design their ideal world. It's hard to collaborate with world builders. Maybe it's because I understand your position that I want to join.
On a side-note, the 18th of October has passed by. That means the Great Uniting has already occurred. Woe is me.
The Great Uniting, was for the 1st run through of the idea. The idea I came up afterwards was that because the hexes were isolated for 5,000 years from each other (in game time/world time) it would be easy to continue the project for new designers, because you wouldn't have to worry about incorporating ideas from other hexes until you were finished (year 5,001 in the setting is when things go chaotic and mesh together, but that's up to the GM to decide).
So don't worry whatsoever that you weren't a part of the original group (they were mostly flakes anyway, who quickly got tired of actually making anything). Most of the work that was done was me doing their work for them, when they stopped visiting the forum and wiki...
I took what they had made, and extrapolated it to try to finish them. I still have work in that department, as we are adding more detail on the Wiki.
For new hexes, make them on the forum first, and when you have names and ideas fully figured out and finish all the requirements of the Laws of Creation, then we can add your little hex (randomly) to the already joined older hexes that were made earlier in real time.
I tried giving deadlines in the past, but my friends cared not for them anyway, so this time around it is more laid back, and when you get done with it, you get done with it.
Do me a favor though, if you find that you aren't interested anymore in the project, just shoot me a PM in the future, so I know that is the case. Many of the former members just went MIA/AWOL and I never heard anything again from them on the project, even after emails and PMs. I got grumpy, hehe, but I'm stubborn so that is why I posted this publicly to try to get people that actually WANTED to be a part of something like this.
Thanks Jharviss, you've given me hope again in the online roleplaynig community, hehe. :)
Any questions, feel free to shoot them to me here, or on the gasp world building forum in posts or PMs. If you send them to me on the Gasp forum I will see them quicker however.
Thanks, Tim
I started working on two new hexes for the project. Choxthet is going to be a totally underwater realm, but all creatures / races that enter the hex can breathe water.
The other new hex Ryyst is one that I built rather fast, but I still need to work out some of the details yet. It has a darker tone to it, as the race is instructed to kill the first born of their litters as a sacrifice to the god that lives under the waves.
If there are any interested world builders that want to participate, you can sign up on the forum, or reply here.
Thanks.
Jharvis do you still want to participate, or don't you have any free time? I know you said you were really busy. If you don't want to work on it, that's fine, just let me know.
I am interested. I can't guarantee anything (don't want to get your hopes up for no reason) as I am working on my own campaign world. I will promise to take a look at the links and see if I can't design some hexes for you (because this sounds like alot of fun).
If you can work on an original idea from time to time, that would be good. Go ahead and get a name on the forum, and I will assign you the board that says New Hex #4.
What I've found though is people say they want to worldbuild, and then almost nothing gets done. It's funny I started the project to get other people's help on things, and ended up with another worldbuilding project where I did most of the work. hehe.
Well, if nothing else I will be able to expand Enlil as long as I'm alive, and I have an internet connection.
Thanks for thinking it's a good idea. :)
Ok I signed up and will give things a look around
Thanks. :) I set up a board for you (labeled New Hex #4 Nomadic) so you can start to tinker away. That whole board is all yours.
Sounds like fun... I always did love having my own little slice of territory to destroy... erm I mean work with :)
I'd like to try my hand at making one. I've signed up on your forum.
I'm actually from Pittsburgh. Maybe I'll be able to check out your group this summer.
Hey Bill,
www.gaspgamer.com is the website for the Gaming Association of Southwestern Pennsylvania. We meet in Coraopolis/moon township once a month in free space that a church lets us use. Membership is free, but you can pay to be a Knight to support the club and get some random perks.
The Gasp Forum is where almost all of our communication about the group takes place. I'm Baron Von Harper on those forums (and my old name was Knight of Frost there).

We have about 60 people on average show up to play all sorts of games. It would be cool if you showed up to play some games.
Thanks for joining. I set you up a new hex and started new threads based on the Laws of Creation for you.
If you have any questions on the forum, the newbie thread is probably the best place to ask them, or just PM me on the world building forum.
You guys have been coming up with some very cool ideas, thanks for that. It's funny, but you have already created more stuff that most of the first group of world builders for this project, hehe. I had to go back and finish their work. So thanks for being productive, and cool. :)
I know with the nice weather that less work gets done on world building projects. I know I have had less time to work on things since I got my 2nd job...
I hope everyone is still interested in finishing what they started. Thanks again for joining the project.
I am sorry that I haven't been working on it much. I got into the groove with my setting and I have to work on that while I have it.
As long as you are still interested, that's cool. There is no time limit or anything. :)
I worked a little on the hex with the Zhyll race. I think it's almost ready for wiki work, though I have to flesh out some more ideas still. I know I need to do the Adventure Sites in more detail, and write up a long history. But other than that, it's about done.
I need to finish Choxthet now, but I have a feeling that might takes some time with my 55+ hours of working a week, hehe.
If anyone needs any help with certain aspects of world building on their hex, let me know, and I can help you out a bit.
I recommend picking a dead language with a fairly large lexicon (you can find them online) for use in naming things in your hex. It makes a nice consistent sound to the names and places.
Let me know.
Do you ever get the feeling, that the only way something is going to get finished, is if you do it yourself?
Hehe.
Oh well, another dream dies a horrible death. Put it on the pile.
I have been tinkering on some new realms for Enlil, and I put up some of the old information on a new website: http://enlil.bravehost.com/
Are Nomadic and Billvolk still hanging around these days?
Do you guys care to continue working on your hex?
Are there any new people that want to work on a 200-mile hex all their own?
I can't, I am a full time college student with several jobs. I haven't had enough time to get on here for more than a simple post here and there.
I wasn't around last time this was here, I would be willing to do some work. I'll be honest though, it will probably involve a lot of recycling of ideas that I've used and/or those that I have but haven't been able to.
Just let me know some info and let me know how much you want me to put up. No idea how fast I'll work (full time job till sept) but I'm sure I'll be able to put some stuff out.
Some things I'd like to know are, tone, "grade" of tech/magic/fantasy (high, mid, low) and any other misc info you think of :D
Thanks.
Hey Nomadic,
If life is too busy that's fine, I just wanted to check before I tried to flesh out your world a little to make it complete enough to be apart of the setting.
Hey Llum,
Recycling old campaign ideas is fine, as long as you try to make a unique whole idea in the end, or a mostly unique one, hehe. Get yourself a forum name, and I will make you a board on the forum, with some threads to start you out with. I may have 2 other new people joining as well.
If you can complete all of the God/Designer Letters in the Laws of Creation, than that would be excellent. Most designers complete most of them and bail before finishing, hehe. That leaves me to finish them. :)
As long as you post at least once a month, at this point I would think that was an excellent posting rate for this project, hehe.
Low Tech (we are going for a mythical fantasy world)
Magic can be low, mid, or high, that's up to you.
Most of the project is summed up in the Laws of Creation:
http://www.eonsreach.com/worldwiki/index.php?title=The_Laws_of_Creation
Get yourself a forum name, and I will see you on the forum.
Also, any suggestions are welcome on any of the old realms, as most of them are not complete yet.
So basically, you can make your own, and help with the rest if you so wish.
Tim
Hey Llum,
I set up your own personal forum board, and I started 22 Threads that correspond to each letter of the Laws of Creation that you need to complete to be "finished."
Enjoy. http://www.eonsreach.com/worldforum/index.php?board=29.0
Ok, after some false starts. I started up. Everyone on the CBG feel free to check it out.
