Title: Xathan Previews: I'm back, baby.
Post by: Xathan on February 22, 2008, 04:58:23 PM
So, I've been lurking and posting long enough to think I can declare my return. (crazy idea, I know.) As I tend to do when I return from my long absences, I'm posting what projects I'll be working on in the coming weeks.

Umbral Classes: While I'm still working on the shadowchild, it is by no means the only class that will use the umbral pool mechanic - I hate using an idea like this once and letting it go. Expect to see the Darktotem Warrior, Dusksmith, and Engimist once I have the shadowchild more finished.

Pirates! Yes, I'm updating pirates. And by updating, I mean cutting things out. As it was, I had too much going on, and it was taking away focus from the Main Points: Pirates! I've decided to make pirates an ethnocentric setting, with the Core Ethos being Pirates are Cool. :-p I look forward to seeing what you all think about what's coming up.

Xathan 2.0: I'm going to be, along with pirates, necromancing some long dead settings. Expect to see new, improved versions of Sreth, The Verdant Apocalypse, The Sundered Lands, and more. (those coming later on)

Dark Frontier: A new setting that uses the umbral classes I've built, Dark Frontier is a Fantasy Western with elements of supernatural creepy thrown in. Look forward to fey Indians, recently freed goblin slaves, trains, and a new class: Gunslinger.

Blood Magic, Golemborg, and Ki: Old, old, old mechanical concepts of mine that have faded into the past, I plan on revisiting these and seeing if there's stuff worth updating there.

That's it for now. I'm sure new projects will arise as inspiration strikes.

Oh, I should probably mention what I'm looking for here, by way of response: let me know what you're looking forward to/sounds interesting. I thrive on feedback, and the more I know people want something, the more I'll post about it.

Dark Frontier - gimme Dark Frontier!

I can picture it now, magic missile-slinging sorcerers, complete with poncho ensorcelled with mage ruins that denote their sworn school of magic. Undead bushwackers, bandy-legged sherrifs with shotguns of disruption and pistols of disentigration! Golem horses driving stagecoaches! Elven whores! Fantasy DEADWOOD!

(or at least that's how I picture it) :)

Huh, what is pirates? Sounds interesting, I suppose I will have to look into it when there is this mythical update... :P

In all seriousness, The Umbral classes sound cool. I definitely think the mechanic has potential.

I had to reread all the rest of your post, because I stopped after "I'm updating pirates" (which should be read as I'm giving Poseidon false hope...) and hit the quote button. You know I have to hate you now. I start developing Kerdith and you come out with Pirates. You had a nation very similar to Tirein (or parts of it, I reread the pirates comments I made and I pointed out similarities between Tirein and something else) Now this:
Quote from: Xathan, Last of the FallenA new setting that uses the umbral classes I've built, Dark Frontier is a Fantasy Western

I have been secretly working on a [low magic] Fantasy Western setting, while I let my other setting rest. Why do you do this to me? (Though after you posted the shadowchild, I stole the pool idea. Like I said it has potential. I was trying to figure out how to make a low magic magic user and the pool gave me an idea.)

You've got it down pretty well, though there is somewhat less magic - though not a whole lot less. (there was a lot less, but you gave me some mental images I just can't ignore. :-p). There's a good dash of "dangerous frontier that bleeds into the shadow realm" in there too.

I'm having a lot of fun writing it, too - it should be a lot of fun.

I'd figure you'd react more to my announcing Pirates updates than my horrific wording. :P

You missed my post above your response to Moniker...

Quote from: PoseidonI said things here, but Xathan is lazy and only going to reply in one block, so he edited it out.

Ahh, so I did miss this. >.> I are smart.

First of all, I actually am updating Pirates - drunken notes are being made now, wich will be updated after I soberly clear it up and delete the stupid from it. (I don't think rabbit assissins don't fit, a race of semi aquatic humanoids do.) I wouldn't torment you this many times without putting some new content up.

Glad you like the Umbral classes. I look forward to seeing what I can do with the mechanic.

And if you want low magic fantasy western, Dark Frontier isn't for you. Sreth, on the other hand, should fit the bill quite nicely. :-) (As of now, the ONLY magic is the Umbrals, perhaps dementists if I ever finish them, and the gunslinger, which has some quasi-mystic abilities.)
