This is the discussion thread for the April Contest (http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?46911). Have fun!
Oooo, this one looks particularly yummy. Plus, writing for this contest may finally get me off my arse and write something new for Pirates. I'd give it a 95% chance of me entering, unless I fumble my craft (worldbuilding) check.
Question: Does the creature have to come from beneath water, or could it be more exotic/metaphorical (acid, "sea of sand", the depths of the Astral, etc?)
Very interesting.
I hope to enter this contest, certainly, I'm just a little worried due to my campaign setting. Tephra's unusual, to say the least. Oh well, I'll just play with it! Should be fun.
Well Jharviss, my setting Wetra is almost too "normal".. I guess in theory I could submit anything then.. Hmm.. ;)
Despite the fact that my campaign world barely exists at all, I think this still qualifies me for a try. There is a huge swath of sea between the Isles of Caillech, the primary campaign region, and the continent of Cer about 600 mile away. I think I need to develope two submarine cultures, one preying on the other in the waters surrounding the Isles of Caillech.
1. Roan are a type of Irish Selkie, non agressive seaborn race with the abilities to remove the skin to walk the land of men. Dwell in sea caverns at the foot of small islands, once beach caves now submerged since the rising of the seas at the end of the ice age.
2. SeaWolfweres - or something similar, an aggressive, even monsterous seaborn race that hunt the Roan as food, slaves, and even perhaps wives. A clan of sea barbarians more primitive than the Pictish peoples of my campaign world, mesolithic in technology. Preys on men and ships as well.
I'm posting to say I'll make an entry. Maybe this way I'll have something to keep me from backing out.
This is a really great contest for me, honestly. I remember deliberately leaving space for these kinds of aquatic menaces, but never really filling those spaces in.
Maybe this'll finally get my creative mojo flowing!
Well this contest looked great until I got down to the very last line: "PS - Please put all chit-chat, talk, funny remarks, discussion, and shenanigans in the Discussion Thread."
That's harsh dude. Really, really harsh. . .
Okay, more seriously; I think I'll put my mind to this one - I deliberately constructed Panisadore's geography to consist of 2/3 to 3/4 ocean - all in one great big huge freakin' puddle, but I've so far done little to actually populate this majority of the planet. I'm still mulling over the "bigger picture" concept as to how the intelligent aquatic races in general interact with those on land. It seems pretty much a given to me that they would all have a definite stake, interest and influence in the overall global politics and power playing and that their "internal affairs" (both within and between aquatic cultures) would noticeably affect relations with other environments and governments (especially naval powers). While I am again largely looking at standard races (kuo-toa, sea elves, etc.,) I definitely want to add some unique characteristics to the milieu.

For the particular theme of the next issue of Fantaseum, it needs to relate to oceans and seafaring. Now, if oceans are something completely different in your world, then you could probably make a case for it. :)
Thanks for all the response guys, I look forward to your entries!
oh, man i am toally entering this and i think i have an idea of an entry which actually helps to fill in a gap that occured recently when i was trying to think of mre stuff in my setting.

totally misunderstood this until i saw ishmayl's response. i had thought that you were asking if it could be something like a sea of sand or big area of acid in the ocean or having the depths of the ocean blend into the astral plane or something. i now understand my mistake but really kinda like that "astral plane at the bottom of the ocean idea. i wonder if it's possible to make that work..... hmm.... methinks i have a new future project....
i might do this. would be my first contest.
are you allowed to edit the submission after you have posted it before the voting starts?
Hey guys, caffeine + insomnia = actual work done on my entry.
I might actually enter successfully, I hope you all like it.
This looks like a very interesting contest. I've been inspired to add to my setting because of it, and I'm working on an entry, but cannot guarantee I'll be finished by the 26th.
The entries already there looked quite interesting.
Edit: I have a few questions.
Does it need to only have the potential for danger? or can it be dangerous right off the bat?
Also, I'm not sure what it means when it says 'purpose' under the guidelines.
Hey Atlantis, sorry, I didn't realize you had asked.. yes, you can edit until the voting starts.
hhhhhhmmmmm This contest has escaped my notice until today. It looks like the deadline is coming up fast. If I didn't have other things going on in RL I would attempt an entry. I still might but don't hold your breath.
all done mie. well i think so at least.
well i cant promise anything but ill try and have an entry for this one ready by the dead line in hopes this gets my creative block to go away
Don't forget folks, tomorrow night is the end of the contest! We've got some good entries, make sure you get yours in
Well, it looks like I won't be making an entry this time around. However, the time I put into the world-building to establish a base for the contest entry came out well, and I'll post it soon.
