These are the results of a couple night's work by Nasty and myself on the ranger. There are a couple areas on which we differed, so our classes are very similar, with minor variations. Both of them lack divine magic, but gain a couple of unique abilities to make up for it. Enjoy.

A bit on the powerful side (Improved Spring Attack from Player's Handbook II is going to make skirmish much more powerful than its current, modest self), but both variants make so much more sense than the silly spellcasting ranger. I mean, why's a guy getting spells just for walking around in the wild? Heck, chopping down forests and torturing squirrels does turn a ranger into an ex-ranger, so who exactly is granting their spells, anyway?
Oh, and the shifter feats idea: wonderful! Now that I've had these classes to inspire me, I have half a mind to replace the druid's wild shape ability with shifter feats in every campaign I ever run.

I'm working on a version of that, and I believe Nasty is as well, or at least thinking about it. Best of all, Shifting would avoid ALOT of the rules crap that comes with Wild Shape. :)

It shouldn't really be all that hard, if you think about it. A 20th-level druid has, what, six uses of wild shape and three uses of elemental shape per day. That's nine uses of abilities per day over twenty levels, or about one use per two levels.
So give the druid a racial ability at 2nd level and one feat for every two levels thereafter. And there you have it; those abilities instead of wild shape.
Now, if only
polymorph could be fixed that easily.

That's almost exactly what I was going to do. Just for the record, I was going to give the druid Shifting at level one, and a bonus shifting feat at every even level. I was also planning on giving them a bonus shifter trait at every level divisible by five.
