This is a campaign idea I have. It's slightly longer than a one-shot, but meant to be shorter than a full campaign (though if everyone's having a good time, I'll be able to extend it no problem. It's designed for 3-5 people, playing PL10 Mutants and Masterminds characters. Your character is a representative of a formerly hidden society (could be an existing myth, such as Atlantis, Leng, or Lemuria, or one of your own devising, such as a race of humans that fled to the moon or an alien race that hid on Earth after a catastrophe destroyed their home planet). These societies interacted below human radar, but with humans gaining more and more intelligence, technology, and (recently) super-beings, the Hidden Council decided that it was time to approach humanity as a group before humans found them on their own. The lone exceptions were the Thulians, the most powerful of the Hidden, who believe that humanity is a weak and dangerous race that should be conquered for their own good. You are not playing the actual diplomats themselves, but rather are part of a "goodwill team" - a team set up to establish a superhero team in the USA and aid human superheroes in the defense of Earth.
[note]When I say powers, I don't mean your character/race is innately above human norms. It's entirely possible and plausible to design a society that uses magical devices or technology to empower their goodwill team member.[/note] If you're interested, let me know. It's a first-come, first-serve basis. Players are expected to post at least once a day, and an unexplained absence of more than 3 days will result in your character's actions being NPCed until you return. Dice will use the lovely (and underused) CBG dice roller, which is just simply:
[dice]#d#+#[/dice]
Which results in: [dice]1d20[/dice]. If you definitely want to play, post your ideas for your hidden society, character, and powers here (make sure you state which powers are part of your race's heritage and which are unique to your character) and, once you have it, PM me your character.
HERE!!
MEEEEE!!!! PICK MEEE!!!!
I WANT IN!!!!
PLEASE!!!!!! I've waited for this day since getting the book.
Did I mention I'm interested?
Sweet! You're my first player, then. Any thoughts to what kind of character you'll be playing?
Concept: Altanian with Psionic and underwater muntant abilities
Excellent! We have our Altantian - who else is interested?
BTW, if you had an idea for an Atlantian-esque character and wanted to play that, feel free to make a new Atlantis-like society - or say that your character is a descendant of an Atlantian colony or even, when the Atlantian empire sunk beneath the waves, it split in two, so you're from an evolutionary and culturally divergent Atlantis.
And, in case I wasn't clear earlier, but high-tech and magical societies are possible. Amazons are as valid as Aliens. :)
No-one else interested?
I am.
I'd like to be a member of a religious sect devoted to achieving enlightenment and ascension (think the Ancients from Stargate). My character's powers will be enhanced mental abilities, mostly telekinesis, telepathy, and pre/postcognitive abilities.
The sect grew from Buddhist teachings, but they took a different direction when ascended members began to show the living members the "quick and easy" path.
Oooh, interesting concept. If you go this route, you'll be the second mentalist on the team - Poseidon's character is also a telepath/tk. I don't have a problem with that as a GM, but that does mean there will be overlap, so make sure both of you would have fun with that.
When we get to character building, we can talk to ensure less overlap.
The Alantian will probably not have precognitive abilities. Weak telepathy, strong telekinesis (precise), mental awareness, healing, water breathing, swimming, skills that go well with telekinesis, these are what I'm thinking about.
Though if there is too much overlap, I'd be willing to change concepts.
Mine will be about heavy telepathy, with the following array:
*Enhanced charisma, enhanced bluff, diplomacy, gather information, and intimidate (if we're PL 10, this will cost 30 points).
*AP Damage targeting Will Save
*AP Drain Wisdom
*AP ESP
*AP Move Object
*AP Move Object (Damaging)
I haven't yet decided on whether his communication ranks will be outside of that array (so he can use it in conjunction with ESP and such) or inside the array (for cheaper costs).
His physical capabilities are going to suck, hard, as he's been slowly but surely empowering his mind and allowing his body to shut down. I intend for him to have 1 rank of True Resurrection/Reincarnation so that he can ascend the first time he dies. Then he'll be rebuilt in an insubstantial form.
Xev: That sounds like a cool concept - I look forward to seeing your character. (and yes, this is a PL 10 game.)
Anyone else interested? If I just run this for two people, that's fine, but a larger group is always so much more fun.
Hi there. I'm new here, but was referred by a friend from over on WOTC: Real Adventures (http://forums.gleemax.com/forumdisplay.php?f=278). I've been spoiling to get some M&M action, and this looks intriguing.
In contrast the the two already submitted entries, my submission would be a physical adept (strong, tough, able to heal self, some martial arts) from the often overlaping dimension of Leng - a world that exist just on the other side of the veil from Earth. Since Leng doesn't exactly have the most sterling of histories he would be a icon for his people, their candidate to demonstrate good will and to show that they are not aligned with the Thulians.

Awww now I feel special. Welcome to the boards Belabras. (If you couldn't tell I'm not know by seTiny here. :D)

I love the concept - and the group needs a physical person. Glad to have you aboard!
I tried to stay away. Really. But Xathan, you better stick around for this one, I'm tired of PbP's that end quickly and without resolution. Pos has been in several of these with me, and surely agrees. No funny business, mister. ;-)
Okay, now don't laugh at my character concept here. I want to play a fairy. From the moon. It could work, right?
Details forthcoming, but basically a ranged combat specialist with some pixie-dust trickery thrown in. The character will be a hermaphrodite, yet to choose it's sex and place in society. Naturally gifted with abilities beyond the human norm, the character is out to prove itself to the human population as a powerful individual, so as to prevent the humans from attempting to take advantage of the small-statured moonfolk.
All good with you, Xathan?
I've been wanting to DM a M&M game for 2+ years now, if I can count (which is a question). So no, no vanishing act on this one. I'll have an absence here and there for various reasons, but it'll always be a "I'm going to be gone from date X to date Y."
As for the fairy - it works, and rounds out the group well. Since it's obviously a fairy, odds are its race originated on Earth, so you'll have to explain why/how they left, but other than that, I can definitely work with that.
To all, I'm loving the concepts we have. Two of the three hidden cultures I really wanted to see are represented, we've got a well rounded group that fits the themes. I'm always open to more players - 5 is my stated max, but I'd happily go over, since it's much easier to manage large groups of PbP. Once anyone gets their character sheet finished, send it to me over PM - even if it's just a first draft.
A general note for my GMing style: I'm very well aware that this is a superhero game, and I stick to genre - including allowing retcons. If your character isn't working for you for whatever reason, let me know and we'll see what we can do. I'm ready to get this ball rolling whenever you guys are, so send me those character sheets. Also, drop me some more details on your culture and characters backgrounds. A policy of mine when it comes to GMing is rewarding anyone who makes my job easier, so the more detailed backstory you give me for your culture and character - especially with plothooks - will be rewarded with at least hero points if not outright handing out free power points, so I want you all to work on that as well.
I'd like to get us started, at the very latest, a week from Monday. Does that work for everyone?

Wait. You're giving me two weeks... to write a background and describe the culture of Atlantis? ARE YOU INSANE!!!!! I have work that will never be done... *cries* If I get fired I blame you. :P
Okay, fair enough. Let me put it this way, then: When do you all feel you can be ready?
And do keep in my mind "allowing retcons" extends to background, too. If you feel you can only write a short bit now, and want to fill out later, that's no problem, as long as what you're adding doesn't contradict established material (If you have an amazing idea that does, we'll talk). If you give me a brief background now and then a huge detailed one later, any rewards for it will be given retroactively, so it's not like this is a one time only offer.
I'm flexible - my main goal is to make sure everyone has fun. :D
Quote from: Xathan WorldsmithOkay, fair enough. Let me put it this way, then: When do you all feel you can be ready?
The two weeks works for me. It'll give me time to finish spending these blasted points... :)

Bah, I don't need rewards, I get to write the history of Atlantis... mmmmmm Atlantis....
For everyone else?
And if you guys would rather start sooner, I'm completely cool with that - I have most the major NPCs written up and I'm cleaning up some history, and the overall plot is down pretty well too. So it's really up to all of you.
I can be done in a few days if I need to, but given more time I'll definitely be fleshing out Leng and doing my Lovecraft and Mignola research for said writing. So more time is good.
Man, this is going to rock!
Yay! I'm really looking forward to seeing how you flesh out Leng - I was hoping someone would use it. :D
And I agree re: the rocking. The more I talk to you guys about this, the more excited I get!
BTW, Belabras, I sent you a PM. In case you didn't get it (and for anyone else who needs it), my AIM SN is ImStillAlexR if you need/want to IM me.
I'll be ready in a few days. I'm doing some work on my last 3E game right now, so I'm very busy today. But tomorrow I can finish building the character and get started.
Cool! I'm interested to see what you come up with. :D
Now we just need to hear from Crit.
Well, one of the original concepts for the character is that he works as a College Professor in the fields of Theology and Psychology. I was even considering having him be paraplegic, or possibly even have MS like Steven Hawking.
At night, he would use an Alternate Form + Projection ability to project his "mental self", and that's what he would do hero work as. He'd still have his psychic powers in his normal form, but this allows him to retain safety and anonymity.
But I can just go with the lazy rout I originally envisioned (he can walk and such, but he chooses not to, and just levitates himself everywhere). But since his secret society operates within society, and isn't from another place, it makes sense for him to not be in the habit of waltzing around with his powers all the time.
Plus, being effectively disabled makes for fun complications (such as someone finding out who he really is and attacking him while he's on a mission in his mental form).
Ooo, I love the disabled aspect (I'm a huge fan of drawbacks that provide fun and ways for me to complicate your lives :P) I look forward to seeing how your society shapes up - while most of the Hidden stay out of human affairs, this seems subtle enough to be fine. :)
They remain in human affairs enough to be able to snatch up anyone who achieves the level of enlightenment required to unlock the basic enlightened abilities. Those that refuse to join would have to be forcefully de-evolved to remove their enlightened abilities, and their memories altered to make them forget.
That's about perfect for how I view the Hidden. I like - quite a bit. Do they have a name for themselves?
Same question to crit re: the moon faeries.
Quote from: Xathan WorldsmithDo they have a name for themselves?
Same question to crit re: the moon faeries.
Seelie.
Worked on my character today in Calculus. Ideas are in the spoiler.
[spoiler=Moon Fairy]
The fairies live in glass palaces on the moon, hidden from observation on earth by various glamers. Their magic is tied primarily to themes of dust, powders, light, and celestial bodies. Themes of their powers and culture relate directly to folklore, as the fair folk are literally made of starlight and pixie-dust, ride shooting stars to earth, etc. Think poetry given form.
The fairies left earth at the start of the industrial revolution, as pollution and iron are both anathema to them. The moon, lacking the amount of iron in the core present on earth is the base for fairies because their powers are strongest there, away from iron and among the stars. Their interest in earth relates primarily to the preservation of the natural places and sanctity of nature, as they still love the woods and lakes of their home planet. The Unseelie are unruly and mischievous fey who remained on earth after the great flight, and may serve as enemies, allies, or plot devices.
Characteristics of my character: Fairies don't feel pain. Main combat role is battle-field manipulation, via illusions and "faerie mischief"(moving roots to trip people, making floors slippery, etc.)
Offensive powers: Toxic powders, foxfire, a fairy sword with sleepp poison that corrodes iron, and the aforementioned mischief.
Defensive capabilities: illusions, invisibility, acrobatics and high maneuverability.
Movement: Flight, blinking within range of sight
History: A noble son from a good family, eager to prove himself in a world without challenges at home. He has been chosen to represent the good traits of the fey to the humans before mistakes are made and they are considered an enemy.[/spoiler]
I like a lot so far, crit! I'm guessing you're going to be putting a weakness to pollution and such in there? And what's Foxfire? Different name/description for Hellfire? Or something else?
Quote from: Xathan WorldsmithI like a lot so far, crit! I'm guessing you're going to be putting a weakness to pollution and such in there? And what's Foxfire? Different name/description for Hellfire? Or something else?
A weakness to pollution and iron, certainly. I haven't even opened my book yet for this character, but foxfire would be conjured flames of a magical nature, likely capable of distracting and hypnotizing a little more than you're average candle, but capable of doing some real damage if necessary.

Coolness. I'm looking forward to seeing more. :)
My group are known as the Enlightened. They believe in strict non-interference in people's ascension; they are a group of people trying to ascend, but they aren't in contact with those who have. They don't publish books on how to do it (aside from some newage theological stuff that members may have written before they discovered they were on the path).
I think I'm going to go with the paralyzed aspect. I find the idea of being a Psychic Steven Hawkings to be fun.
Still working on the Char. Just checking in.
Eee, totally missed these posts.
Xev: Sounds really nice....and yes, the Psychic Steven Hawkings is a very cool idea. Out of curiosity, are you going Astral Form or Alternate Form (Projection)?
Belabras: Thanks for the heads up - I'm looking forward to seeing your character.
As a general notice to all, I'm going to be out of town this weekend, going on vacation with my girlfriend. As such, odds are good I won't be around from Friday afternoon till Sunday night. (though I might be on and off briefly) If you guys could get your character sheets to me through PM by sunday night so I can see what you guys are mechanically, that'd be awesome - if not, then no worries, and no need to rush on the back stories. (consider the sheets you turn in to be "first drafts" of your characters - I'd just like to see where you guys are headed in a more concrete mechanical form.)
I need some help with what drawbacks symptoms of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (as it turns out, Stephen Hawking doesn't have MS, he has this) would have. My character doesn't actually have the disorder, but his ever increasing reliance upon his brain is causing his body to slowly shut down.
And I will be using Alternate Form (Projection), as Astral Form has many effects I'm not looking for.
Plus, Astral Form is bloody expensive for what it does. :-P
For the drawback, because you have a power that compensates, it'd be an uncommon, minor drawback. Having to speak through a machine would be an uncommon, moderate drawback, since there would be some penalties with interaction skills using it. Since he can kind of move, I'd go with a Str and Dex of 1 each, which is where the drawback really comes in. :)
Okay, cool, that works for me. So mute and his inability to walk are only going to be 1 point drawbacks. I can't wait to see what his +25ish Diplomacy, Bluff, and Intimidate are like translated through his speaker.
I'm trying to get everything to work, but I drew myself into a corner. I may have to use action reduction to increase the action to activate my Mental Projection in order to reduce its cost. Right now I have it as a move action and projection, reducing the cost to 3/rank.
The container removes the paralysis, grants flight, adds an AP teleportation to his psychic power array, removes his con, gives him Regeneration (true resurrection) in 5 hours (to cover if his psychic form is killed; this way he'll have a chance of regaining consciousness every 5 hours if he succeeds on the con check, I even bought up the recovery bonus since its the form that has to regenerate), immunity (life support), a force field granting toughness and reflex saves, and some defense bonus.
But logic says this form should have immunity to fort saves, since it is an unliving body composed of solid mental energy. Life support covers a large amount of fort effects (poison, environment, disease), but not attacks that are meant to target fort (and not all of those are given the "only affects living" flaw). But in order to add in the 30 points Immunity (Fort) costs, I would need to increase the activation action of the container to Standard, thus reducing the cost to 2/rank.
I am asking about what to do here because I don't want to be unfair here. As a GM, I would find issues with someone having a container's cost reduced by an activation cost, especially a character like mine who fully intends on doing all of his adventuring with his alternate form. The action could become an issue for him, but I don't see it becoming one easily. Thus I don't want to reduce the cost that way; heck, I feel bad using the Move Action flaw to reduce its cost.
But the character's skills ended up costing a good amount, and I was forced to leave his two-way mental communication power outside of his psychic array so he could use it in combat and along with his enhanced charisma and social skills.
Xathan, what should I do?
Just a bump so Xathan can find us again.

Ahh, thanks for bumping, I would have missed this otherwise.
You're right...I do feel it is somewhat unfair to use the action for more than move here, simply because it's hard to think of a scenario where your character wouldn't already be in his alternate form. Here's some ideas for flaws that might fit:
Check Required: From Ultimate Power, you have to make a skill check to activate the power. I'd go with Concentration. The check DC is 10+power rank. Normally I don't allow this flaw, but I'm betting you're going to have a very high rank alternate form, so the DC would still be reasonable without being an auto-succeed.
Unreliable: Entering the Alternate Form is hard, so 50% of the time, fails. This would have a similar effect to Check Required, only more random and a bit more balanced, but also less in flavor.
Side Effect: This would be a -2, so you could bump the action back up to move. When you re-enter your body, you suffer a Side Effect of some sort: a Dazzle to all of your senses as your body readjusts, an int/wis/cha (all at once) drain from the snap back into your body, a Stun/Nauseate, or something similar. I'd make it affect you when you re-enter your body, not leave it, because this seems like it a) makes the most sense and b) is the most likely to actually impact you, since if you're reentering your body in a hurry, you're probably going to want to be able to see and react to your surroundings.
Any of those seem good to you?
[ooc]For an overall update:
Right now, I have character sheets from Belabras and Posiedon, and I know where Xev is now. I need an update from Crit when he gets the chance :) As of now, I'm still looking at next Monday as a starting date, since this weekend will be packed for me - does that work for everyone?[/ooc]
Sounds good. It'll give me a chance to go over some of the issues you talked about in your PM too :)

Works for me as well. It'll give me a chance to get over this writers block issue I'm having with my character's background...
Xathan: Check required might be a solution for point saving. As a GM, I'm actually fine with someone taking "Check Required" as a flaw even if they auto succeed on the skill check. My reasoning is that they had to spend points on the skill and ability modifiers to get it to the point of auto success, so it's almost a little like APing the skill; almost.
Side Effect actually sounds cool; perhaps I wouldn't have my powers for some time upon returning?
I really have a hard time judging what's a Flaw and what's a Drawback. I'll see what I can do about shaving some points off, as I made the alternate form worth much more than I originally had intended.

Yeah, you hit why I'm fine with it as a flaw. I'm never quite comfortable with an auto succeed, since skills usually have a much lower cost than powers and also have other uses...though Concentration would be different, since it's less useful (IMO) than other skills.
That would work as a side effect - it'd be a nullify (all powers) hitting you when you return to your body.
I have the same problem as a player, so I understand. Don't worry about it too much: My primary goal as a DM is for y'all to have fun, and if that means just taking Action as a flaw a second time, I'm cool with that as a final way to dealing with it. :)
Checking in. My last real paper this year is due on Thursday, so I should be able to make a preliminary character sheet that night. I looked through the powers the other night, and I'll probably take Hellfire as foxfire and adapt the flavor. I want heightened senses and teleportation within line of sight. Although, my heightened senses will probably be reduced when surrounded by iron.
Those are my thoughts for now. Monday may work for a starting date, but I have exams all week. If a delay is plausible, I'd appreciate it. If not, I'll squeak by. I understand the importance of maintaining momentum in a PbP environment.
Sounds good, Crit. The powers sound like the fit the character well, and I'm a big fan of flavor-adapted Hellfire.
As for starting time, let's see where everyone stands Friday night - if we need to push back the starting date then we'll do so. :)
Gah! Building characters is hard... I started my fairy, but this could take longer than I expected. I'll work on the sheet saturday night, but I have to work tonight, so nothing else is getting done before then. Sorry Xathan.
I was going points crazy by the end of building mine. I dropped a drawback because I was tried of points...
Xanthan had to correct me 3 separate times. My math is that bad.
I have friends coming over tonight, but when I get home from work I'll put the final touches on the character and I'll be available for some posting. I'm not home from work till 11pm pacific, though, so I apologize. Start without me; I'd like to be introduced in the psychic form anyway, hiding my true self.
Oh, we weren't planning on starting this weekend - I was out watching Iron Man and unwinding. :)
Sorry to hear about your build troubles, Crit. I understand how it is, especially the first time.
Right now, I just kind of want to know where everyone is, and when you think you'd be ready to start. :)
Xathan, I sent you my build, and I'll get a sheet together that should be easier to deal with.
I replied to that and the other PM, but I'm getting a "User Not Found" error message when I do - did you get either of my messages?
Doh, I can't be PMed because of the ' in my name. Let me remove it.
Changed.
Just to let everyone know, I plan on starting the IC thread this Friday. Details coming later - I'm swamped with finals right now. >.< (Note to self: Do not try to start game during finals week ever again.)
Sounds good. Looking forward to it.
Sorry I don't have it up yet - I don't have quite all the information I need. :)
Crit, if you could PM or email me with your character sheet, that'd be great. (Don't worry, it's not just that holding us up - once I have a couple things taken care of, I'll get the thread started.)

I sent you a scan of my sheet via e-mail just now.
So, lets do this!
IC thread up tonight - have to finish the last of my finals & papers first. Then the game begins!
Woohoo!
I mind rape it.
Quote from: Xathan WorldsmithIC thread up tonight - have to finish the last of my finals & papers first. Then the game begins!
My calendar seems to be broken....
Xathan's on a 96 hour day.
I'll be posting it in the next two minutes. Sorry for the delay - it won't happen again, I'm currently out of elderly relatives.
Character Name: Emain, of the Isle of Promises [blatant borrowing from Wikipedia, "Emain Ablach" is another name for Avalon]
Superhero Identity: The Prowler
I'll post in the IC thread when my character sheet is finalized. It shouldn't take too much longer. I think I'll have to rework some things after reading Wikipedia.
Ilurean Appearance:
Ilurean is slender compared to a human and a little shorter that the human average. He is hairless (well not actualy), what appears to be his skin is in fact that his hair is interwoven over their entire body in a coarse shell allowing him to survive the depths. The pigmentation of the hair is a little lighter than a human. His clothes are simple, dark blue, and form fitting. He the only ornamentation that he wears is a fancy looking belt and the watch communicator given to him by the hidden
Simon Appearance:
So far, the other PCs have only seen what he refers to as his "idealized self". In this form, he is a rather thin man, six feet tall, without an ounce of fat on him. His skin is a golden tan, with a completion that is too perfectly unblemished to be real. On paper, his features are rather innocuous, but there is a piercing nature to his eyes and a radiance to him which makes him very noticeable. He doesn't breath, rarely looks at who he is mentally "speaking" to, and doesn't usually physically respond to sights or sounds. For minor tasks he will use his hands, but he always lifts heavy objects with his telekinesis, and he is never seen walking as he flies, floats, or teleports everywhere.
His group is a secret society, known as "The Enlightened". They are a group of people who have, generally on their own, awakened portions of their mind through self study and spirituality. They have a strict policy of not interfering with the enlightenment of others, but once they discover someone who has started down the path they are welcomed into the fold. The group shares experiences and successes with each other, so that they might some day ascend to a higher plane of being. The group reveres those they call "The Ascendants", people whom they believed succeeded in achieving ascension.
By day during the week, Simon is a professor of Theology. He has discovered a loophole in "The Enlighteneds" rules which allows him to guide others to enlightenment by showing them the path laid out in mythology and religion. His own studies have shown that many of the world's prophets were Enlightened individuals.
Emain's Appearance:
A 7-inch tall humanoid with gossamer wings a little taller than the body. He wears a green medieval suit of armor that is reminiscent of vines and flowers. While he has a sword a swell, it is far too small to be considered a credible threat by anything larger than a cat.
Emain is the goodwill hero of the Fae of Avalon, who withdrew from the world shortly after the Roman empire conquered England. While he has been able to adapt to the new times rather well due to his age, the rulers of his society are rooted in the old ways of an age long passed.
Wanted to post here to apologize for this weekend - I think I need to have built-in break time. From now on, I will not be posting on weekend, even if I'm online and posting here: if I don't take the weekends off, I won't be able to keep posting. Hope thats okay, and thank you all for understanding.
Don't worry about it. I take most weekend off from most of my games as well, only coming to the boards to check PMs. Though sometimes I end up posting.
That's what's good about these type of games. Take your time fellow X.
