Title: Sound effects for games
Post by: Johnny Wraith on April 28, 2008, 10:24:50 AM
I've read several threads about what kind of music people play on their games. This sometimes helps depending on the players you have (sometimes it can distract them, as I've experienced). However, I was wondering if any of you go the extra mile and somehow get a hold of sound effects for your games. By sound effects I mean things like explosions or a creaking door... Maybe drops of water echoing in a cave, stuff like that.

If any of you have used them, tell me how it worked out for you. And more importantly, direct me to a place I can get sound effects like that :P

Edit: Actually, I found a couple of pages on the Internet that have tons of sounds, I'm excited! :D The question remains though, if any of you have used them. I have a feeling they could be better than music, but we'll see.

That's a good point.  I played music a couple times, but if the song was really good a couple of them would go off on a tangent about music, while another one sang to it, whle I fought for the fourth person's attention.  However, do you think you could plop a couple of those links down, save me some searching.  Turns out this project in English is a lot bigger than I thought, and I've got like 2 days left to do it.

I've used sound effects a little bit, but mostly as a gag.  For example, every time the hated reoccurring villain arrives, I hit a small file of a bunch of kids cheering.  It's quite entertaining.

When another DM was in charge and there was a combat going on that I was riding toward on my horse, I just put a galloping effect on repeat.  That was entertaining too.

So, ultimately, I think you'll be hard pressed for sound effects not to be somewhat comical.  I can't find the place where I found them, but they were pretty solid.  If I do I'll be sure to post it up here.

a dm i had gave reoccuring villains each a theme which wuld start to play almost innaudibly before they showed up and grow n volume to be noticable the closer their arrival came. and then these or similar things would be used during boss battles and there was one thing (from one of the final fantasy games i think) that he would use for randm encounters.

playing the villain's them quietly before he arrived was cool, cause you would gradually notice it playing and be all "oh crap guys, that ninja/shadowdancer guy's nearby or involved somehow. watch out for the shadows!"
