Title: Commenting / Reviewing in Wiki !
Post by: Alexius Carthwall on May 01, 2008, 11:41:29 AM
Alrighty, So since it seems most commenting/reviewing is moving towards the Wiki (which I love ^_^), I wanted to see how different people are handling these discussions.

On my wiki I have created a Title block for my discussion page to let people know it's ok and encourage people to post Ideas/Comments under the Discussion tab. The following is a link to my campaign Afterworld's Discussion page (http://www.thecbg.org/wiki/index.php?title=Talk:Afterworldl). Help yourself to the title block and modify as needed!

So what about you guys? Still relying on discussion threads in the forums? or are you all for the Wiki revolution? And if you are using the Wiki, are you using the discussion pages or putting notes directly on the pages?

:) Thanks!

I've played with the wiki, and I still prefer the discussions/comments in the threads. A few reasons:

Thread Form:
New posts will pop it towards the top of the forum and an icon shows new posts

Wiki Form:
New edits have to be searched for, and in days with lots of activity a comment may get over looked.

Thread Form:
New posts are easily found because they will be at the end of the thread.

Wiki Form:
With a few clicks recent edits can be found, but if more than one is made since you last looked then some could be overlooked.

Going to lunch more to come if need be.

I very much prefer conversations to be held in the forums.  I feel like I'll miss anything that is put up in the discussion sections of my site, and I have some 30+ pages of my wiki, so things are bound to be overlooked.  The forums are much more streamlined and really help with communication, so anything substantial I'll be saying over here.

An opinion on the other side: I think forums are great for brainstorming uncertain ideas. But for settings that are fairly developed the structured format of wikis (if well organized) makes it easier/clearer. Like LC, I live on the recent changes page. Of course it helps if you set your preferences to always hide minor edits (and if people bother using minor edit), and also I set the shown edits to 100 instead of 50.

On the other hand, supposedly the wikis could provide email notification of posts in watched threads, but if so it's not working or I've set it up wrong. And bumping to the top of the forum is nice, too. So I guess it depends. I know these days I'm only likely to do a thorough read-through of wiki settings.

Easy one for me.

Both.

Why?
The provide a different enviroment.
Wiki discussion pages are about a page, a part of a setting, not the whole setting.  They are also more one-on-one.

Thread discussions are like setting gang-bangs.
We all take turns and there is a lot of give and take, and who the hell knows where we will end up.

Phoenix,
I will be installing an extension that lets people "subscribe" to certain wiki pages, or even certain wiki categories - like, anyone that wants to subscribe to the "Eclipse" category would be notified anytime that a change is made to a page that is in that category.  However, that would involve people using accurate email addresses. :)

I agree with Vreeg - I think the wikis are great about discussing a particular aspect for the setting, and I think threads are wonderful for talking about the setting as a whole, as well as about brainstorming.

Thanks guys :)  and Ish, being able to subscribe to wiki categories sounds amazing :D  I'll have to make sure all my pages have categories associated with them now ^^
