Best mainstream comic book movie to date.
Good to hear. How was The Downey?
Gonna see it today or tomorrow. From what I've heard, people like me think its awesome. I've heard 5 opinions on it:
LA Times movie critic criticized it in every way. After reading it, I wanted to make his life suck.
PC Gamer podcast, Norman Chan and Dan Stapleton said it was awesome, Kristen Salvatore said it was okay.
Seeing it today, after I get my free KFC.
Should those of us who have seen it (or, rather, once we have seen it) use spoilers to talk about our thoughts on it?
No spoiler folks, this is a big one for me. But I would be surprised if it is the "best to date," since I have few doubts that it can top Batman Begins. ;)

and god knows it can't beat captain america

There was a mainstream Cap movie recently?
No, there was a very nonmainstream Cap movie back in the late 80's/early 90's.... it was wonderful, and you should definitely check it out.

There will be a Captain America movie in the near future....
Up coming Marvel Movies:
1 Ant-Man (2010)
2 Nick Fury (2010)
3 X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
4 The Avengers (2009)
5
Captain America (2009)
6 The Hands of Shang-Chi (2009)
7 Silver Surfer (2009)
8 Spider-Man 4 (2009)
9 Thor (2009)
10 X-Men Origins: Magneto (2009)
11 Punisher: War Zone (2008)
12 The Incredible Hulk (2008)
13 Iron Man (2008)
I'm looking forward to the Avenger movie, but only if they keep the same actors who played in the original films (i.e. Robert Downing Jr. as Ironman, etc.)

Dear god.
I second brainface.
I just saw the movie. I thought it was excellent, probably as good as Spiderman. But it didn't top Batman Begins. If anything will, I expect it to be The Dark Knight.
Well, Batman Begins was really good too, but I think I'm more of a Marvel fan then a DC fan. I will admit that Batman is my favorite DC character, so that earns him some points. But, I did have a single issue with the Batman movie, while I had no issues with Ironman.
If the Microwave Emitter could vaporise the water in the pipes, why didn't it vaporise the water in the people?

Sam Jackson as Nick Fury. 'Nuff said.
As far as generic praise, I like that, even though they didn't explain any of the super science, it was believable. My girlfriend is a former robotics champion and she liked the subtle details on the inner workings of the suit (it had moving parts to simulate muscle, to give him his added strength).
Robert Downey Jr. played an excellent Tony Stark. They avoided making an issue of his alcoholism, but he did have a drink in his hand often, which I found great. There were lots of little nods to the comic (the name of his home computer system for one). While it didn't follow the comic exactly, it was updated and modernized, made sense for today, and remained "true" to the source material.
It felt like Ironman. Robert felt like Tony.
I have no complaints about the movie. I feel so good about it that I don't think I'll argue about it with anyone; if someone doesn't like it, that's fine. I feel the movie speaks for itself.
I don't read comics, so my familiarity with superheroes mostly comes from cartoons as a kid. I knew very little about Ironman. On the whole, I'd say I've liked Marvel more than DC.
Which is one reason I think Batman must have rocked so much--if my less preferred style had such an impact.
I do remember reading the director (or someone) saying they wanted to save alcoholism for the sequel.

You are one sick Overlord, Ishy. That was an intersting movie version, to say the least. I liked his shield.
I do have to admit that I enjoyed Batman Begins enough to watch it more than once, including On Demamd.
The name of the terrorist organization was The Ten Rings. Fans of the comic should recognize this as a reference to the character Mandarin, who wields ten rings (one on each finger) of mystical powers. I couldn't help but notice, too, that you never saw the leader actually get killed. It happened off-screen, which opens up the question of whether or not it actually happened.
All in all, I thought it was an incredibly solid, wonderful movie. Loved it. I thought Downey was incredible, and the rest of the cast wasn't shabby, either.
Mandarin's apparently going to be in the sequel, and Terrence Howard's character will have a more prominent role. They're introducing more fantasy elements to the later installments, which should prove interesting. (And yes, Downey will be Iron Man in The Avengers, and in The Incredible Hulk. Lots o' crossovers coming)
And Tony's computer's name was Jharvis, which is his butler in the comic.

Had the british accent and sarcastic humor, too.
FanTASTIC!
Slightly more obvious nod to the fans:
the prototype he used to escape the caves was designed to look like the vintage Iron Man suit
Actually, that's not too big of a spoiler, so you can decide for yourself whether or not you want to read it before you see the movie...
Saw it twice yesterday and loved it. Went the second time because some friends were going, and because no one told me to stay until after the credits. Make sure you do so...it is glorious.
Sam Jackson as Nick Fury OMG Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I didn't even know there was going to be an Avengers movie, so seeing that was enough for a massive dorkgasm.
DAMNIT!
I just got back, and I was like... there's no way it could get any better, they couldn't have something after... so I left.
DAMNIT.
Verily, it doth rock. Hardcore. One of the few movies I feel disinclined to dismember for fallacy.
I just saw it, as well. It rocked so hard that I don't think one could call it a movie.
I saw it... my brain overloaded from the awesome.
The only bad reviews I've seen have been people (women) who didn't like Tony Stark (cause he's a womanizer). That was really it.
And if some women didn't like him for that reason, I say he successfully played the character.
When the only complaint is that the lead actor played his character well....
Wow, everyone in the Great Cabbage agrees that Ironman was magnificent. It's unanimous, and that makes it law!
So then, who wants to tie up the turtle overlord and beat them with a stick till its written in the rules of the cbg?
There will be no turtle abuse.
Perhaps a countdown to the next movie will suffice?
I agree with LordVreeg... no turtle abuse. :(
Aww :(
*puts away the stick*

Oh, wait. You said
no turtle abuse? D'oh! x.
I have to say, Gwyneth Paltrow strikes me as an unusual choice for Pepper Pots, but she was amazing.
Overall, definitely a good movie and a good geek movie.
Yeah, I saw it a second time - I agree about Gwyneth Paltrow - she looks very odd as a redhead.
Just saw the movie... Fan-Freaking-Tastic!!!!
I loved it. The movie wasn't too short nor too long, wasn't boring, had depth... All in all a great movie.
I can't wait to see all the crossover with the upcoming Marvel movies!
Saw it a second time w/ some friends, and afterwards they said
that in the final battle on the roof, Stark discharges the center Ark generator at Staine when Staine is grabbing him. Is that true? cause that would totally suck if I missed that. Also: I love when Staine comes rolling in on the Segway w/ a cigar in his mouth. that scene made me crack up.
This will probably make me quite unpopular around these parts, but in the interest of countering the overwhelming bias in this thread, I didn't find the movie to be end-of-the-world awesome.
Really, it was a nice movie, but I found that, as a newcomer to Ironman, having only a passing experience with some animated series crossovers, there was a lack of the awesome I expected. I believe that this was because the community here hyped this thing through the roof, so I just want to let everyone who hasn't seen it yet, although you should be ashamed for waiting this long, it's a good movie, just not revolutionary or even extraordinary. Simply put, it was an enjoyable two hours of my life, and it did a great job of allowing a comic n00b like myself to join the crowd of fans, but it was not worth staying after the credits and I wouldn't have sacrificed a baby, or even a goat, to see it early.
This is just my opinion, but I thought it necessary to share and balance some of the noticeable one-sided reviews in this thread.

Despite my comment on Gwyneth Paltrows awesomeness, I actually agree.
There have been better movies than Iron Man. There have been better comic-based/ superhero/ geek movies than Iron Man. There have even been better comic-based/ superhero/ geek movies than Iron Man released in the last decade.
It was still good.
I think people may have been over-reating after diappointment surrounding Spider Man 3, which I actually liked.
