Well I went and saw it and I have to say that I feel it lived up to the series. Some people may not agree with me but I really enjoyed it. Harrison Ford was his entertaining self as usual, and the other actors played their roles wonderfully. Because of a tiny error with the projector we got free tickets... so not complaining about that :whoa:
For any of you who have seen it, what did you think? (to those who didn't I urge you to give it a shot)
Wellll...
I enjoyed it, but will deny it if asked in person, and some of it didn't feel quite Jonesy enough for me...
like the bit with the aliens.
I'm of the opinion that if you're going to mess around with CGI you should do it with some taste and subtlety, so mad props on most of the jungle chase, at least in the SFX dept. (the monkeys I could have done without) but a bit too silly towards the end.
Also, knowledge was their treasure, their treasure was knowledge, and apparently knowledge makes your head asplode.
Use Spoilers! Some of us aren't as lucky as other people and have to wait until tomorrow! :)
I'm happy to hear the movie is entertaining, at bare minimum! :)
Ack! Sorry man! Fixed.

Its all good in the neighborhood... Hmm now I have a strange craving for Apple Bees... :P
I'm wondering, did Ford look too old for the part? I mean he's no spring chicken any more...

Error with the projector? You got to see a few minutes of "The Happening" too? Where do you live????????????

They advanced the timeline. It sort of worked. Sort of.
OH, my opinion. I loved the acting. I loved the pacing. I loved how the scenes were put together. I didn't like the plot.
I'm not sure on my over all opinion of the movie. My girlfriend said it best when she said "it's like having sex with your best friend; you liked it at the time but you need to think about it for a couple of days to realize if it was a good idea."

Like I always say, better sort of than not at all! :)

Lol no it just sort of shut down (I live in bend oregon btw). Also... that last comment about... erm doing things... with best friends... I am going to have nightmares now :ill:
I loved the acting and a lot of the dialogue, but the plot...
Not Indy. No way.
I even liked most of the plot twists, like the whole... yeah, well, you who've seen it know what I'm on about. But the entire
ALIENS IN AN INDIANA JONES FILM
... upset me.
Also, if you're going to have an Eastern European woman, get an Eastern European to play her. Or at least someone who can do a vaguely convincing Ukrainian accent... it made me go 'eww'.
I loved Indy 4, it not such a departure from what Lucas and other writers where doing with Indy, especially the esp stuff. The soviets where big on that. Even in some the games The ideas are kind of far fetched. But in some respects, they are grounded in the rumors, speculation and mythology. Speilberg can still shoot an action movie like no one business. he much better with his shot selection than most of these action hacks out there directing movies. He can still direct tight sequence. Harrison ford; I loved his take of Indy blending some elements of Connery into the role.
All in all a great romp, fits into the pantheon of temple of dooms and Last Crusade. I just saw temple of doom, Underrated if you ask me, and I can debate this with anybody lol.

I saw this on Friday, and I enjoyed it. A few notes from my standpoint:
Non-spoilers:
Good action scenes, overall. A few that didn't work so well, largely because they just didn't seem quite right with an aging hero.
I didn't feel that the Mutt character was well-realized. Like they couldn't decide if he should be a tough punk or callow youth, and they ended up with a mish-mash of the two that didn't click with me.
I found it interesting that the two movies that dealt with Christian mythology seemed to work out better than the ones that dealt with non-Christian mythology. I'm not sure why that is. Just because I'm more attuned to the mythology of my own culture?
Nice that they brought Karen Allen back, that worked out very well I thought.
The psychic inter-dimensional aliens bit seemed a bit off. Not terrible - there was lots of mysticism in all the Indiana Jones movies - but mysticism works best when you leave a lot of the mystery in it. This didn't work out as well.
Fist fights between an older Indy and a young, brutal KGB agent? Not believable at all. Would have worked better if it had been an equally grizzled and experienced KGB agent.
I disagree. The only one that didn't work out, in my opinion, was the one you've spoilerized. The others were just enough of other people, bad timing (the whip swing, for example), and briefness to be believable.

After the Harley scene, I didn't see much of the punk. Where was he?

Probably that, and the Christian mythos is ingrained as true (or at least partly) to the majority of the western world, while non-christian mythos has been bashed for the last two-thousand years.

They had me until they said 'inter-dimensional.' One universe is big enough, no?
I've never seen any of the Indiana Jones movies, is it worth seeing one of the old ones before heading into this one?
It's worth seeing all of them. My favorite is the last crusade though if you really want to do it right you should start from the beginning and work your way into the fourth one... though only watching one and then moving on won't hurt you much.

Hate to be nitpicking, but
Inter-dimensional does not mean inter-universal. Two whole different things. Inter-universal is basically exiting the bubble that our universe is and entering into another (possibly through means of wormholes while inter-dimensional is being able to exist in 2d, 3d, etc. However, anything that is native to a higher dimension would be pretty much impossible to perceive in the dimensions we are native to, so they most likely just used that to make them sound fancy. Oh, and IMO, you can never have too many universes.
Mina Watch Raiders of the Lost Ark It by far the best action movie out of all of them, There nothing better Than Dr Jone putting a whuppin on some nazi's, and since you never seen it, the first is always the best.
I think I might do that Spirit. Seeing four movies in short order is about my movie quota for the year honestly.
I loved it. Loved the aliens, too, they were well in-keeping if you ask me. After all, the first one ended with the Arc of the Covenant being opened and loads of Nazis melting before it's Holiness... aliens are no more far-fetched than that.

I think it's less the believability factor than the fact that in the old films, Indiana Jones was not about extraterrestrials (as we seem to have dispensed with spoilers now). It was about real mythology, more a history-fantasy crossover. This is a history-sci-fi crossover, which just didn't fit with it for me.
I honestly didn't have a problem with it. It is a mix of ancient mythology in regards to the Mayan culture and the modern mythology that has spawned up around these crystal skulls (which in real life are different then in the movies... but it is an alternate universe). So I don't think it deviated all that much. It is still solidly locked in the mythology and archeology that makes it very much an Indiana Jones movie.
Personally, i think it was a bit too over-the-top with the aliens. The worst part by far, though, was the
freakin' UFO
in the end. They could've done without that.
But then again, it was still an enjoyable movie, just not so Indiana Jones-ish as i had hoped.
Spoilers, people. Spoilers.
I thought
The aliens could have been handled better. There's a way to do inter-dimensional aliens and there's a way to do inter-dimensional beings worshiped as Mayan gods. The two don't necessarily overlap, especially when you bust out Roswell mummies and UFOs.
And overall, I'd say the plot would have worked much better as a video game. It relied a bit too heavily on video-game-style exposition to justify its action sequences (all of which were also very video-gamish).
Also, when has any manufacturer ever made a lead-lined refrigerator?
Yes there is. It just wasn't generally used as a household appliance (though could be justified as an item they were testing to see how effective lead lining would be against radiation).
Modern Lead Lined Refrigerator (http://www.biodex.com/radio/leadline/leadline_003feat.htm)
I stand corrected.
I love that the janitor from scrubs made a cameo as an FBI agent. It makes me think he leads a double life and makes that show funner to watch as I question his motives in screwing with everyone.
I thought that having Marrion in it really was a nice touch in making the film canon with the rest of the films.
My only gripes:
There was some CGI where I thought it wasn't really needed, especially in the beginning, which annoyed me.
And I really, really find it more satisfying seeing Nazis getting their asses kicked (of course, that's just the time line, but it still detracted from my enjoyment.)

The great thing is that Scrubs has already shown that aspect of him, using his minor role in The Fugitive (also a Harrison ford flick), and I had just finished watching that episode before I went to go see Indie.

I agree. Nazis make good villains because they are easy to hate and think of as evil. Russian Communists are not such good villains. I agree to a certain extant with the ideals of Socialism, so have mixed fealings about the portrayal of Reds as villains.

I agree to some extent as well with the idea. However I have no qualms seeing the reds as enemies here. Partly from the fact that during the cold war this was just how things were viewed from the American side. The other part is that some of the communist leaders really did commit horrible atrocities (some that dwarf Hitler's holocaust).

Average Soviet Citizens are hard to hate but, not the Soviet Leaders and Government, and by extention their military. Its the same way with Nazis, easy to hate the leaders, armies and government, quite another to hate the average joe blow citizen under Nazi rule.
