I see as we can do this one of two ways. We can just do it like last year and I make a big news announcement and give out links to the awards "trophies," or we can do it live now that we have an official chat room. If we do it live, we could have some fun games going on, and generally just everyone having a good time hanging out in a pseudo-live-like fashion. However, if only seven people show up, it's going to be disappointing. If we set a date, I would like to see a good chunk of people there - twenty, thirty, even forty people, there are at least that many regular posters on the site who could make it if they plan on it. I know there's about five people at least who would have no problem showing up, because they come in there and chat all the time anyway, but that leaves a lot to account for. Discuss what you think about the options, and let's get down to business.
I think it's known which option I'm in favor of. Live chat awards ceremony! Wheeeeeew! /me breaks out the beer

I only hesitate due to time constraints. I've got few nights where I am available for an extended block. Higgs, Nomadic Cabbage, and I have Monday night online work. And 2 live sessions on Sundays this month. ANd then I have three trips this month, to St. Louis, to NYC, and to Irvine.
Then again, I think I am up against that ridiculous animated Crayon in most catagories, so I might as well not even show up. He's one of my favorite people to post with, so I assume he's everyone else's as well....
Or if I show up, it's to shower him and the other winners with Bollinger.
I will give it my best to show up whenever. I just can't do Sundays (or Monday evenings for the reason Vreeg said). Just remember that I may well disconnect and reconnect a bit. Normally isn't a problem for me but the otherworlders servers don't like me much (thats the main reason I am not on irc all the time).
I think it should be live, as an extra dressing to what we had last year. Of course, it would be ridiculous to expect every active member, much less all 600+ members, to simultaneously join a single IRC channel, so either way, I think we're going to have to post it as a news event.
If nothing else, I'm sure all the nominees will do their best to be there for the live event, and there's quite a few nominees...
Live is good.
I probably won't be able to make it unless it's tomorrow or after the 10th. (I'm at RoM's house atm, and will be getting back to my house then.)
Put me down for a news post. The only evening I can count on being home is Mondays, and only about half of those. I really think with so many members in different time zones, trying to get everyone that might want to hear the results together at once is going to be nigh impossible.
I'd be worried about my own ability to attend, certainly. I know others are as well. While the idea of a live ceremony is really interesting, I'm skeptical about our ability to coordinate everyone's attendance.
If there ends up being a live component, I'll do my best to attend it, and I'll look forward to doing so. But there will inevitably be people who can't attend, so I do think you should take pains not to leave them in the dark.
Well, there's always doing it live and - for those who can't attend - having an announcement afterward!
Perfect.
Well, obviously we could have a strong component for those who can't attend as well... PMs for winners who can't attend for sure, and posting the chat log. Could also have something going in the tavern simultaneously for those that can't log into IRC.
I may or may not be able to attend (kind of iffy right now). My birthday is on the 7th and I'm leaving to see my Grandpa on the 14-18.
Like I said, I'll try my best to show but, no promises :(
Since I'm new around here, and am not totally sure what these Awards are, or what they represent, I'm not going to give an opinion, since it would be uninformed, at best. If you do run them live, and it is held at a time that I can attend, I would definitely poke my head in just to see what was going on.
Live sounds fun, although I can't be certain of logging on at all on Mondays since the diner next door to work is closed Mondays and if the wi-fi router locks-up/crashes (as it had tonight) there's no one around to reset it. Most other evenings work okay.
Hmmm... while live does sound fun, I don't get home until around 8:00 Mountain Time (GMT -7), which could be a bit late for you foos out east.
I think we should put together a handful of possible dates and get a poll going on who could make which ones.

For some reason, I find this statement ridiculously hilarious.
We'll probably just do a non-live announcement like last year.
I'm not logging in through a server at work when I'm there (we don't have one beyond the physical line to the office system,) - rather via the wi-fi next door (the router is on the other side of the wall behind my desk. . .) The trouble is all they really provide is a router - no one there seems to understand anything regarding it so it frequently crashes. (I tend to be cautious about my throughput volume these days when it's acting unstable, although the signal's strong enough to run Second Life when I was working graves and the only one using the bandwidth. . .)
I probably wouldn't be able to attend something live until next wednesday or thursday at the earliest. I am on vacation at my brother's and I get internet on his computer, but not IRC (I'd still have to download it on my laptop anyway). I'm using his, because 1/2 of the time I can't get Wi-Fi in range on my laptop, 3/4 of the time I have it in range I can't connect, and 1/2 the time I can connect I still don't get internet. And that small percentage of the time i can get internet, it's really tenuous and is prone to cutting out without warning.
So what is the news on this I wonder. I am curious to see if those I voted for won :P
Coincidentally, I was just working on this Nomadic. I now know who all the winners are (and none of you do! na-na-na-na-NAA-NAA!), and will be posting the winners on Wednesday, August 20, sometime in the afternoon.
Cheers!
The turtle has spoken. Praise be the shelled one (even though it has taken nearly 3 months for the awards to go from start to finish :P ).
That's why they're annual. ;)
Yeah, and 3 months is nothing compared to Awards ceremonies like the Oscars! (I think)
So there will only be a news post and nothing more? That serves the purpose it is required to, I suppose.
You're current title is Whitney. That makes me feel a bit better about always being stuck with names of female members of the Enterprise crew.
Ninja, it seems that just one news post is probably going to be the best way to do it, since most have said that they would have problems making it to a scheduled chat event.
I'm going to have to change these ranks pretty quickly this time....
Unless I am mistaken there are 9 rank slots (10 if the admins get a special slot of their own). I think it should go:
Wedge Antilles
Tycho Celchu
Wes Janson
Corran Horn
Bror Jace
Derek "Hobbie" Klivian
Ooryl Qrygg
Gavin Darklighter
Nawara Ven
if ishy wants his own rank he can be Admiral Ackbar...
ITS A TRAP!
:P
Quote from: IshmaylI'm going to have to change these ranks pretty quickly this time....
Burvohl
Kordul Vi Dol
Gardul Han
Herin Yareng
Tokkedu
Welken Brangwen
Skrimgulun Kortre
Yewen Had
Vada Yelig
Karduk Del
Or, just make all of the titles female... nobody gets singled out that way. ;) :P
Unless...are there any females here?
There are!
Me for example! :P
@Nomadic - I have absolutely no idea what those words mean. :)
@LC - Not objective enough - I mean, I know that Burvohl is the awesomest of awesomesauce, but I would definitely put the Skrimgulun Kortre higher on the list. ;)
Quote from: Ninja D!Unless...are there any females here?
Yay, I'm not the only one to make that mistake! :)
AH! IT IS A GIRL!
...yeah, I figured.

I SHUN YOU FOR NOT KNOWING YOUR ROGUE SQUADRON PILOTS!
seriously though, we had star trek... it's time for star wars and I think regardless of what we do for that Ishy should be admiral ackbar and should put "ITS A TRAP!" in his user title.
The problem is there aren't as many clear cut ranks in Star Wars.
Quote from: Ninja D!The problem is there aren't as many clear cut ranks in Star Wars
Hmm, how about:
Droid
Stormtrooper
TIE Fighter Pilot
You get a fancy uniform
Star Destroyer Captain
Grand Moff
Even Grander Moff
Dark Lord of the Sith
Emperor Freakin Palpatine
I've known guys that would use that name. Besides, there could be a story behind it. I spent some time as Lil D Flo and some people still call me that from time to time, even in person.
Quote from: Ninja D!The problem is there aren't as many clear cut ranks in Star Wars.
There are in rogue squadron (actually in rogue squadron the ranks are even more visible then in star trek). Though in this case I wasn't going by rank but by their skill in an x-wing based upon the books (which I have read way too many times).
Quote from: sparkletwistIt sort of surprised/amused me. What male in his right mind would use a name like "sparkletwist"? :P
I don't know, it's generally hard to tell what anyone on the interblags is thinking. I mean, come on, what male in his right mind would use a name like "Rose of Montague?"
(I Keeeed! I Keeeed!)
You can tell how long someone's been in the Denver Pagan community (if they're online - nearly all are) by whether or not they call me T(itanium) Elf - in the 90's that BBS handle was the only name anyone referred to me by locally. The real old-timers tho' still use my previous (pre-'91) legal name of Steve.
Sparkletwist - two doors up from The Monkey House is a bar full of them. . .
A Montague by any other name is still as thorny.
Quote from: Snargash MoonclawA Montague by any other name is still as thorny.
QFT.
I have actually on numerous times ran into the issue of a guy or a girl online coming across as the opposite sex. It usually ended with humorous results.
wow. This is EPIC thread derailment.
'Don't be confused by the Title of this thread, no award ceremonies were damaged in the derailment process.'

Yeah, sorry, but though you've always been female in my head, after my years working in Manray, I don't always make my mind up about gender even after meeting people. On Line...you're all hermsicles until declared otherwise.
The Internet, where men are men, women are also men, some men are women, and children are Chris Hansen.
I'm a people too!
LV - were you addressing me or ST? ("Yes," doesn't count - I hold (C), (TM) and patent on that verbal tap-dance step and you can't afford the royalties.)
[blockquote[Blur]. . .girls who are boys who like boys to be girls who do boys like they're girls who do girls like they're boys. . .[/blockquote]
This is not a derailment - we're testing a storyboard treatment for "xXx III" (Paul Rubens currently projected in the title role,) in which the evil villain's secret HQ train (appropriately code-named "Gamera") is diverted down a hidden railroad spur into a long dark tunnel. The light at the end of it is a mirror/disco-ball. . .
Quote from: sparkletwistThe Internet, where men are men, women are also men, some men are women, and children are Chris Hansen.
Well said, well said.
EDIT : Oh yeah; THERE ARE NO WOMEN ON THE INTERNET!
Chris Hansen is everywhere... Vreeg should be wary about offering buttless chaps to anyone under 18.
So anyway... announcement next Wednesday!
