Title: Tales of Phaedoras: Requiem of Ice
Post by: Raelifin on May 15, 2006, 05:26:31 PM
"World" Map:[spoiler](http://www.raelifin.com/phaedoras/pictures/Map6.png)[/spoiler]

Seasons change and the leaves turn, but in the great pine forest of the north the only sign is the chill of the wind and the coming of the snows. It is only mid-autumn but already there is a few inches of snow on the ground. Farther north, the mountain peaks are blanketed by glistening fields of snow above the tree line. As the sun sets, the temperature drops and a proud figure pulls up his fur hood against the wind. He and his two companions trek endlessly over the white ground, leaving three sets of boot prints behind. However, this tale is not about them, though they do play part.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Five miles away, a different group sets up camp. The hulking form of a kiag bends over a small flame, slowing bringing it to life in the windy darkness. Shifting in his huge fur armor, the kiag, Garak, pushes out with his folded wings, lifting the furs into a more comfortable position. For the hundredth time, the nyamm called Kieru wonders why his master insisted on leaving the village when the crude shelters would have at least blocked the wind. As imposing as ever, Garak throws his bedroll onto the spot cleared for it and sits down. Looking at his companion with his imposing yellow eyes Garak says in a deep voice â,¬Å"Be ready for anything tomorrow. We're almost there.â,¬Â

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even farther away, a lone traveler begins to settle in for the night. Kianak Lanak the naikakaii looks into the darkness with his sharp eyes but is unable to see anything other than the nearest trees in the dim light. The howling wind makes an eerie companion in these cold, foreign lands and the forest seems very desolate around him.

Totems:
[spoiler]
Staff of the West Wind
Spirit: Fey (Air)
Activation Components: Somatic
Item Slot: Weapon
Activation Time: Standard Action
Range: 60 ft.
Effect: 5â,¬,,¢ wide line
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Fortitude Negates
Magic Resistance: Yes
Minimum Energy Points: 1

This staff appears to be made of three individual lengths of ebony wood, all of which are twisted around one another to create a five-foot masterwork quarterstaff. At one end the three coils meld together about a foot from the staffâ,¬,,¢s dull point, while on the other the three spirals bend apart and point straight ahead, forming three points, each approximately eight inches in length and three inches apart from one another.

When activated, a powerful wind erupts from the center of the staffâ,¬,,¢s three points, blowing away anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in the squallâ,¬,,¢s path. Any creature in the blast must make a Fortitude save or be blown away. Any stability bonuses are added to this save. Any gaseous effects such as smoke or fog are dispersed in the area effected. If any creature makes its save or resists the effects, the line ends.

Augment: Each additional energy point spent increases the DC by 1.

Cloak of Rainâ,¬,,¢s Embrace
Spirit: Fey (Air)
Activation Components: Passive
Item Slot: Cloak
Activation Time: None
Range: Personal
Effect: Personal
Duration: Constant
Saving Throw: None
Magic Resistance: None
Minimum Energy Reserve: 1

This white cloak is extremely soft to the touch, but is surprisingly tough and difficult to tear. Its wide, deep cowl prevents sunlight from hitting the wearerâ,¬,,¢s face when raised, making this cloak a very comfortable yet protective garment.

Air akin to that from a fresh rain flows from the body of the cloakâ,¬,,¢s bearer, creating clean air in any space the witchdoctor occupies. This grants the wearer immunity to airborne poisons or other gaseous effects, as well as the ability to breathe in areas with no air circulation.  This does not allow the bearer to breathe underwater, although bubbles will float away from the witchdoctorâ,¬,,¢s body.

Guardian Talon
Spirit: Ancestor
Activation Components: Passive
Item Slot: Neck
Activation Time: None
Range: Personal
Effect: Personal
Duration: Constant
Saving Throw: None
Magic Resistance: None
Minimum Energy Reserve: None

This large, polished black talon appears to have originated from a large avian creature, most likely a Kiag. A simple black cloth chord has been threaded through a single hole at the base of the talon, allowing it to be worn as a necklace.

This charm allows the bearer to create an invisible barrier at will. At any time, as a free action, the bearer may spend any number of energy points to heal hero points. Every 3 energy points spent heals 1 hero point. This allows the witchdoctor to subtract energy points if they get hit. If the charm is ever destroyed (disenchanting is fine), the drain on the witchdoctor's soul saps some of their life force and deals one point of permanent constitution drain unless they make a fortitude save DC 20.

Fog Bracelets
Spirit: Fey (Air)
Activation Components: Verbal
Item Slot: Wrists
Activation Time: Standard Action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect: 15â,¬,,¢ Radius Cloud
Duration: 1 Minute
Saving Throw: None
Magic Resistance: No
Minimum Energy Points: 1

These bracelets resemble simple white lengths of cloth which are knotted around the bearerâ,¬,,¢s wrists, leaving approximately one foot of cloth trailing underneath each wrist.

When activated, the ends of the bracelets begin to blur into the air around them as they pour forth an impossibly thick, heavy fog. This fog prevents vision beyond 5 feet and grants concealment to any creature 5 feet or farther away. Strong wind (21+ mph) disperses the fog in 4 rounds. A severe wind (31+ mph) disperses the fog in 1 round. Area of effect wind abilities do not effect the cloud. Any fire attack that effects an area dispels the fog in its effect. Area of effect wind abilities do not effect the cloud.

Augment: Each additional energy point spent increases the duration by one minute.

Frost Rings
Spirit: Fey (Air)
Activation Components: Somatic
Item Slot: Hands
Activation Time: Move Action
Range: 30 ft.
Effect: 5â,¬,,¢ wide line
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None
Magic Resistance: Yes
Minimum Energy Points: 1

This set of rings appears to be little more than smooth, featureless dark blue rings forged from sebayet. Totaling six in all, they are meant to be worn on an individualâ,¬,,¢s thumb, index, and ring fingers.

When activated, a blast of freezing wind shoots forth from the bearerâ,¬,,¢s outstretched palm, dealing 3 points of cold damage.

Augment: Every two additional energy points spent increases the damage dealt by 3.

[spoiler=Background]
Kieru does not openly share his origins with those he is not familiar withâ,¬Â¦[/spoiler]

[spoiler=Appearance]
The first and most noticeable trait in Kieruâ,¬,,¢s possession is his fur, which is a solid white in color. He is one of the few nyamms in the world to bear this recessive trait, which makes him extremely noticeable in a group. While of normal height, Kieru is thin, largely in part of his malnourished diet. Wearing a simple white vest and a pair of black pants, Kieru hides his slender frame beneath his white cloak, which continually provides him with the clean aroma of a fresh rainfall. In the presence of his mentor or during negotiations he tends to hunch slightly, both to look less intimidating and to avoid any aggressive confrontations.

Hiding his expressive violet eyes behind a white blindfold during the day, Kieruâ,¬,,¢s face can become extremely difficult to read in daylight, or whenever he is placed into an uncomfortable situation. His straight, white longhair is kept at a long length, though he usually keeps the majority of it swept behind his keen ears. Kieruâ,¬,,¢s voice, like that of a serpent crossed with an angel, is one which drips of cunning and intelligence. His voice seems to almost purr at lower tones, making him appear to be in a constant state of amusement whenever he is in a relaxed state of mind.
[/spoiler]

[spoiler=Personality]
Kieruâ,¬,,¢s mind is sharp, and it is this which makes him most dangerous. Calm but cynical, he can be very useful to those who befriend him, but such a task is no easy feat. He is constantly wary of others, and he tends to react bitterly to awkward social situations or events which he cannot understand. His upbringing has left him cold and remorseless to those he does not know, but he does not harm those who have not wronged him.[/spoiler]

If she makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, she instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if the trickster is wearing light armor or no armor and is not encumbered. A helpless character does not gain the benefit of evasion.
â,¬Â¢ Sixth Sense (Ex): The trickster gains an intuitive sense that alerts her to danger from traps, cave-ins and other dangers, giving her a +1 bonus on Reflex saves and a +1 dodge bonus to AC to avoid traps and other, unliving dangers.
This ability may be taken more than once, each time both bonuses increase by 1.

[spoiler=Appearance] (http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e243/EcnivTR/shaili.png)
Shaili's appearance is average for a Nimunbella; however, her eyes show a pale red color in the normal silver, which combined with her normal insectile eyes and her tendency to stare at people, can make her rather unnerving indeed. Her wings show an iradescent green color, but they are usually scuffed and scratched, as Shaili doesn't take care of them very well.[/spoiler]

[spoiler=Personality]Shaili is a greatly disturbed individual. Some have gone as far as to call her a tainted spirit. While she is a nice person at heart, her mind disceives her often and leaves her confused and scared with seemingly no cause. She isn't very wise or perceptive for a nimunbella, but she can think clearly even if she doesn't show it. She has a strong dislike for violence as do her kin, though as a result of frequent and forced exposure to it over years, it no longer strikes fear into her heart as it once did.[/spoiler][/spoiler]

Character Background and Description
Description: A young Nimunbella (17 years) who is quite short even for a male (7'1"). He has a darker shade of ivory skin with a few folds of skin on his arms giving the illusion that he is striped there. His eyes are of the usual silvery color and his wings are an eerie bluish grey and white. He wears dusty dark blue robes and carries around his belongings on a hoop-pack (or whatever you call it).
Background: Zan is one of the few of his race who have the guts to go out into the world. He still shys away from most of the rougher looking crowd, but for a Nimunbella he's quite adventurous. He started his calling after hearing the whispers of the spirits in the land. When his tribe decided to move out so they wouldn't be in the middle of a large trading route, he stayed where he was and abandoned his family and friends to set off on his journey to share the peace of his kind. With that in mind, he followed the caravan lines to the larger populated areas of Phaedoras and found that his talents of healing and care were more needed than his views he wanted to share. After collecting a large sum of money from local companies who emoloyed his work, he ran off out of the way of the hectic city-scapes and into the line of travellers who he thinks he can reach out to more easily.

[ic=Kianak]Kianak drops his pack and leans his bow up against a tree. He gathers up some of the nearby branches and twigs that litter the ground. After clearing a small area, Kianak some of the smaller twigs in hopes of starting a fire. Several attempts later he a small flame begins to consume the kindling. Kianak places two of the branches into the pit, and sits with his back to the wind, trying to block some of the wind from exstinguishing his fire.

He pulls his pack closer to him and fishes for the last of today's rations. As he rips a piece of dried meat with his beak, Kianak looks up at the stars.[/ic]

The warmth that fire brings warms the bones of both Kainak and Kieru. With no company, and his belly full (or as full as you can be on rations) the naikakaii soon gives in to fatigue and falls asleep.

After drawing some circles of protection in the snow, Garak crawls into his bedroll, club still gripped in his muscled talons.

--------------------------

Zan's weary legs sink into the early snows and the wind stings his frail wings. Perhaps going this far north at this time of year wasn't the best idea. The traders back in town had been persuasive though. Ten pounds of salt upon arrival of the campsite, the price was too good to pass up. And for a simple spiritual warding too, those not knowledgeable in the way of spirits are so easily afraid of the dark. Well, just another mile or so... wait. What was that? A sound off to the right? Perhaps something waits out in the gloom. The dark pines block out the moon. Anything could be out there...

[note]Wix: Everyone else knows about how I run time. In a PbP setting, it's too hard to keep everyone in the same time zone. Meaning, if I say it's morning for some characters, it might not be morning for other characters. Also, if I go past a period in which you want to get more roleplaying done, feel free to do a retro-post and continue the roleplaying at the same time as the plot advances.[/note]
The cold sun rises over the eastern mountains, bringing a crisp beauty to the wilds. Kainak stands and stretches, using some of the techniques learned while staying with the Iekokai. Searching for some scraps that could be called "breakfast" he finds the snow around his sack has been disturbed, though no tracks are visible. Opening up the hemp sack, the Naikakaii finds that he has been robbed. The precious jade idol that was given as a gift is gone, along with the small amount of gold he carried.

-------------------------------------------

Meanwhile, Kieru wakes to the sound of Garak mulling about the camp. The remains of last nights fire have been rekindled, the heat rolling over the camp. The sunlight warms his blindfold, making the insides of his eyelids glow a deep red.
[ic=Garak]Garak croaks harshly "Be ready soon, we should be nearing our destination and I'd like to get there as early as I can."[/ic]

Searching blindly for his backpack, the nyamm wearily purrs, "And where exactly is our destination?"

A kettle on the fire begins to howl, and is soon silenced by the sound of its water being poured into a cup. Garak remains quietly for a few moments and then replies with "A strong spiritual... 'presence' has been noticed just a few miles up the mountain. Some miners from the southlands are in the area and I suspect that they have something to do with it. We're going to pay them a visit."

[ic=Kieru]Continuing his search, Kieru winces beneath his blindfold as the kettle's wail bombards his keen ears. Keeping his body low to the ground, his hands blindly skim over the snow until  after several moments his hand collides with the backpack, and the nyamm carefully retraces his steps back to his bedroll.

Fumbling with the buckles to his backpack, Kieru finally manages to stow away his bedroll. Picking his staff from the snow by the location where his bedroll used to lie, the apprentice witchdoctor shoulders the backpack and approaches the crackling sound of an open flame. Crouching before the fire, the nyamm briefly warms his hands as the breeze swirling about him makes the small flame dance and flicker. He doesn't bother to ask for a meal, it has been a long time since he has enjoyed such a luxury upon request. "Do you plan to fly?"[/ic]

Zan: The howl of the wind is your only answer. Nothing can be seen or heard out in the night, maybe it was just your sleepy antennae playing tricks on you. The cold wind bites at your wings, wishing there was some way to protect them. Curling up in a warm blanket would probably be the best bet... Just thinking about it makes you cold.

The trader you spoke with said that there is a sandstone cliff face that is steep enough to not hold snow. In the morning it should catch the light quite well. The campsite should be at the cliff base. (He also pointed out the direction and distance)

Kianak: Your powerful wing beats blow snow away from the ground and causes your heart to beat faster, bringing warm blood to your wingtips. After a few minutes of flying you begin to wear out and decide it'd be best to walk a bit. It only takes you a little bit to realize that you've lost the trail. Frustrated, you sit down on a rock that is still freezing from the night's chill. A growl surprises you from a few yards behind. Turning around slowly, you can see a large grizzly bear prowling in the early snows, no doubt ready to begin its long sleep through the winter months. The large bear seems not to have noticed you, being upwind and it would probably be easy to escape. However, a strange sight catches your eye. AS the bear tears apart a rotten log in search of grubs, you notice a metallic glint on its thick arm. Unfortunately, the wind might change at any moment. Would it be best to investigate further or play it safe?

Kieru: After about an hour of walking Garak stops. "Young Kieru, have you ever heard of Ieklag the Ancient?" It's strange, the inflection of his voice seems almost friendly... it must be a trap.

[ic=Kieru]Listening to the "befriending" tone of Garak's voice, Kieru catches up to the kiag. His path has been surprisingly straight during this journey, and though his blindness forces him to move much slower than desired, he has not trailed too far behind.

Thinking for a moment, Kieru runs a slender hand through his longhair. Or at least at first he appears to be doing so, until his fingers remain over his blindfold's knot. He is no fool. "No, I have not." Kieru carefully replies, his voice remaining on an edge. "Is that someone I should know?"[/ic]

Zan: You aren't familiar with the local terrain, but you did see an abandoned strip mine during the day. It should only be a few hundred yards to the south. Slightly delaying tomorrow's travel, but it would provide shelter from the wind.

Kianak: Yes, you are in a pine forest and it would be easy to climb or fly up near the bear.

Kieru: "Ieklag was a naikakaii who was the son of a wind spirit who lived long ago. Always was he envious of his father, and he wished to also become immortal. He left his village and set out on a journey to find immortality. Eventually, he came to an icy mountain where a hermit lived. The hermit told Ieklag of a magical elixir within the depths of the mountain that could grant him eternal life. Maddened by his own desires, the headstrong fool did not listen to the hermits final warning. Months later, Ieklag returned, triumphant, to the eerie where he had been born. However, the elixir did not simply grant him eternal life, it also transformed him. The moment he had flown from the village his soul had ceased to be naikakaii, the elixir changed his body to match his spirit and he had become a demon to his people. Fearful, they struck him down and nailed his ever-living frame to a tree as a warning to those who would give up who they were."
Garak stops, pours some of his imported cofee into his sharp beak and swallows. His voice becoming more stern he says "Remember that lesson. Those who leave their people are never welcomed back."
Without warning, the cold avian begins walking forward at a strong pace.

Zan: After a few minutes of traveling through the dark, you find the abandoned strip mine. Like the prospectors that you're going to meet tomorrows, the mine was made by southerners from Minmika. Usually nyamm or twimi, the southerners mine for precious metals and prospect for sebayet shards hoping to get rich. This copper mine was probably abandoned this year, because some of the wooden structures are still intact, too large to be worth moving.

Exercising his wings, Zan floats slowly down to the quarry basin and ducks under some scaffolding. The improvised shelter is wonderful; its clear of snow, the drop makes the entire area quite calm and the cliffs would deter most wild animals. Lying on his stomach, Zan carefully opens his wings so that they are fairly flat against his back and pulls up a blanket. Normally, the risk of damaging wing tissue would deter covering his upper torso, but the cold would probably freeze them off anyway. Weary from exhaustion, Zan drifts off to sleep and begins to dream about his home.

Kianak: Flapping up to the lower branches of an old Ponderosa Pine, Kianak can see a golden pin snagged in the bear's fur. The bear turns to face you, clearly having heard your wing beats. Roaring territorially, the giant moves over to the base of the large pine and begins to slash at the bark with it's huge claws. The pin drops off and lands in the snow at the base of the tree. Frustrated at not being able to reach his prey, the bear gives up and wanders off after a few minutes.

Kieru: Finally, just before noon, Kieru and Garak reach the encampment. Kieru's keen ears can pinpoint at least sixteen different voices before the two witchdoctors are noticed. Sloppy. These miners must be green to not have sentries posted in these wild lands.

Zan: Zan wakes up bright and early tot he sound of howling wolves. Packing up quickly, the nimunbella flies up above the mine and can see a of the canines emerging from the wood to scan the open rocks. They notice you, but pay no heed and continue on. Following their example, Zan continues his journey northward.

Kianak: Dropping down to the base of the tree in a glide, Kianak checks for the bear again before scooping up the golden pin. Emblazoned with a stylistic shining eye, the pin is multi-purpose. You remember when you bought the pin from a purrabok merchant in the port town of Ekutwas. [spoiler]Ekutwas is a twimi trade town just south of Pokobru lands. The name "Ekutwas" means "red-house" in totwimi. "Eku" is actually an Ubin word that roughly means "of rose hue" and is used to describe deep red objects with high saturation. I don't know why, but I needed to rant about that. ;)[/spoiler] It's strange that the bear should be wearing your stolen pin. Perhaps the bear is the thief? O_o No.
Please roll a wisdom check for common-sense.

Kieru: Northern Lunan: "Don't make any sudden moves! We outnumber you." The voice sounds roughly like a nyamm male and the very thought of any of these bumpkins being able to even scratch either of you is laughable. Six miners stand in front of you. Judging from the sound of their breathing and footsteps they're all nyamm. Garak doesn't seem to find the nyamm's comment funny, and continues to walk forward. In shiienaii,  "I'm in no mood to play nice today. I'm going to see your leader. Come along Kieru." It occurs to you, perhaps a bit too late, that neither Garak, nor the prospectors can likely understand one another.

Zan: At about lunch you hear the faint sound of some strange eagle just before you reach the encampment the trader spoke of. The camp is roughly semi-circular, built on a fairly level section of ground on the edge of a cliff-face. Several nyamm with heavy cloaks scurry about the camp excitedly, one notices you and hurries over. Speaking in hurried Luanan, the nyamm introduces himself as Minras. "You'd best hide, peace-walker. Two intruders just broke in and you're in danger."

Kieru: A weapon is thrown toward the kiag as he steps forward and you can hear it ricochet off of the magical shield Garak no-doubt summoned. Garak's cold voice screeches into the air, "My power is absolute! I will not have my will denied! Submit or die!"

[ic=Kieru]"Wait! They can't understand you! Let me translate, then we may go without soiling our hands with blood." Kieru sharply whispers to Garak. It's remarkable how thick-headed he can be...

Turning to the sound of the miners, he hastily speaks to the group in Northern Lunian. "We come here to speak to your leader. I don't want anyone to be hurt, please step aside."[/ic]

Common sense indicates that if the pin somehow caught on the bear's arm, the bear must have crossed paths with the thief at one point. Backtracking the bear might let you find the culprit's tracks.

Kianak: After a few hours of slowly following the bears shallow tracks (survival: take 10), you find that they intersect with a pair of boot tracks. Following these new tracks for a few yards you notice a sebayet ring with a turquoise gem lying in the shallow snow. This must be the right path.

Kieru: Garak scoffs at Kieru and retorts "You always were weak! But if you wish, I will not kill any."

Kianak: Renewed by finding actual prints, you hurry onward, hoping to catch the villain by nightfall. The tracks lead up the mountain, and they become successively fresher. Every now and again you find a bit of jewelry or art, the thief either has a hole in his pocket, or is leading you somewhere...

Kieru: Clearly awed by the mystical powers that Garak wields, one of the miners says in a shaky voice "Kiag never mean peace... if you truly mean no harm, lay down your weapons before you continue..."

Garak sniffs and asks what he said.

[ic=Kieru]"I am no weakling, but it's...bad business to kill those who summoned us. Besides," a grin creeps across Kieru's malnourished face, "these are my people, are they not? Killing them would mean I would never be welcomed back."

Narcissistic fool.

"He wants us to relenquish our weapons." Kieru continues to Garak, "I will see if I can convince them otherwise."

Turning his head to the general direction of the nyamms, Kieru's slithering voice mimics a tone of friendliness as he speaks to the apparent ringleader of the group. "It was your leader who summoned us, but we," he, "came by choice. Surely forfieting our armaments is an act of distrust. Kiags can be peaceful, but only if you give them something to be afraid of. I am living proof of that."

Zan: Minras looks at you oddly. He shifts his hood so that none of the bright light from above touches his vulnerable eyes and slowly replies "Are you alright, peace-walker? Perhaps it would be best to sit down and clear your head. We have been expecting you to arrive, and have the salt bricks ready as soon as it's safe to see the excavation site. You don't know the danger you are in. I heard that one of them was a kiag."

[ooc]I just thought I'd provide a little info for anyone who's confused. The nyamm are prospectors, but at this point what they are "excavating" is unclear. Zan was hired a few days ago to help them ward off any demons that might be present. (For the salt reference, read through the first page) Kiag are... *sigh* the equivalent of orcs. Meaning, they are violent and feared by most "civilized" races.

In terms of languages, the region is fairly multi-lingual. Purrabok from the west speak Pokobrian, the native tongue is Shainaii, the language of the avians and kitchiek that live here. However, just a little further south, the dominant language is a sub-dialect of Lunian. Zan knows both northern Lunian and a bit of Shienaii, having grown up on the north edges of the plains and learned the local language in his travels.[/ooc]

Kieru: The naymm pauses "I don't remember Natynas giving any invitations to any kiag, but you may be right. We can escort you, but don't try any voodoo. We still outnumber you."

Kianak: Sun falling behind the treetops, you reach a mountain waterfall and the tracks stop. The stream is about three feet wide and is quite shallow. The tracks reach the edge of the shallow groove that stream flows down and then they stop. Perhaps the thief discovered he was being followed and decided to cover his trail again... or maybe he walked down the path of the waterfall. The sound of the falling stream reminds you of the rigorous training that many Iekokaii go through by learning to meditate while being pummeled by the brunt of one of the large waterfalls on the island. This stream is no doubt much colder though, probably just above freezing.

Kieru: "Alright, just as long as they keep their cloaks on. Spirit-blasted monsters..."

The nyamm lead the two of you forward, into the heart of the camp. The noon sun makes the top of your head itchy, even through your cloak. You can hear several frightened comments from both nyamm and... purrabok. It's been a while since you've seen purrabok this far east. Most of the time they are content to stay in the warmer lands of the west. Perhaps they are responsible for the "disturbance" that Garak mentioned.

[ooc]I'm fairly certain there is no "country" in Phaedoras because, correct me if I'm wrong, there are no truly urban areas.  Your character pretty much went from this:

"With all my wisdom, why didn't I buy some matches?"

to this:
"I say a'thanks yuh, sai Minras"

In under 24 hours.
Somehow I wouldn't expect a character with above-average intelligence to speak like they are in a country western film...especially when there is no...well...country western areas...[/ooc]

Well, I assume there is some "country" since there are at least some frigid mountains. Besides, I didn't know I'd be dropping into a well-populated frozen world. Ah well, it's actually just a variation on the english language, like in the Dark Tower. Plus I might talk a little more politely to myself, if that makes any sense.

Title: Tales of Phaedoras: Requiem of Ice
Post by: Senkennomei on May 23, 2006, 06:54:49 PM
[ooc]Wait...what? Phaedoras is NOT a frozen world. Heck, there is only one area on the entire world that IS frozen, and we are not there (take a look at the map). We are only experiencing a little season known as "winter".

Either way, the world is not that well-populated. I don't know what gave you that idea, especially since Zan has only just come across the first sight of civilization from days of travel, and even that is just a mining camp.

That aside, you really can't have a "country" accent or a "country" theme if the area itself has never undergone a degredation of social structure and experienced the influences which consequently leads TO a "country" theme. That's like saying a cowboy can exist in medieval England. It doesn't happen.

Sorry if I'm sounding a bit harsh, we had a player who did something very similiar to this in the other Phaedoras campaign, and he remains to be the source of much frustration. Phaedoras is NOT a spin-off of any sort of civilization or theme we have experienced in our world. Therefore, "country" doesn't exist. For that matter, "the english lanugage" and domestic cats are non-existant as well.

Your character is currently speaking a language you have never heard in RL, and based upon your character's stats it is highly unlikely he would speak any sort of degraded tongue. Even if he had a low intelligence score, he would simply be using abbreviated or broken words, not entirely new ones based off of another dialect IMO.[/ooc]

Usually I like to refrain from commenting on someones character or playing style, but I would like to clarify that it is winter in the mountains, and any civilization isn't going to be very "well-populated."
Also, Lunian is an entirely new language, as are all in Phaedoras. See the website article on Hizzari if you want. That's the only language with any decent amount of work.[/ooc]

Zan: The void overtakes you. Within the dark realm beyond sight and sound, the spirits of the campsite whir around you in a tangled stream. Slowly, you focus your mind and the individual spirits separate and float with the ebb and flow of your inner pulse. In total, there are a little more than ten spirits. You reach further. In the emptiness, the spirits become nyamm and purrabok. The weak life force of buried seeds waiting for spring drifts upward as tiny wisps of air fly in and out of the darkness, laughing gaily. Suddenly a flash of energy pierces the void, the fey spirit of a flame grows before you, her outstretched arms bringing light to a world of nothingness. Her nimunbella form is but a guise, but her youthful joy lifts up your spirit until...

The world spins to a sickening halt as a mad scream fills the air. Like a chorus of children crying out in pain, an endless howl of misery tears at your soul. Standing fast, the wicked pain of the nearby totem flows around you like water around a stone. You can almost feel each individual spirit screaming madly... it's almost too much, but you might be able to hold on. (If you wish to end the pain, you wake from your trance. Otherwise, the torture continues and you can get more of an insight into the land as a whole and the power of the trapped spirits.)

Kianak:
Just about to give up and go down the stream, you glance once more at the waterfall. Deep within the icy depths, a light sparkles. Blinking a few times and walking closer, it is clearly no illusion of the setting sun. There appears to be a cave behind the icy sheet, but would it be worth exploring? The freezing waters might just kill you without protection.

"Well, gosh be darned," Zan says as he falls to the ground with a few tears in his eyes. He looks around at the prospectors. "I need a little bit of rest," he says to them, "when I'm done, I will need your help."

Well, I suppose since Raelfin is still making it (I assume) then it wouldn't hurt to add the language in. But, I guess since most D&D campaigns are based off of a 'north-western'-medievil society, I'll hold off on the new culture in a campaign. Raelf can make that discision if he wants. Still, I'll talk like a guy who knows a lot of words... :)
Also, Raelf, I need to know if I can identify what that thing was. Also, I'm not so clear on the different types of spirits and what they represent (Like totems, dead spirits, land spirits, and/or others).

[ooc]Screaming = Totem(s)
Prospector Spirits = Nyamm and Purrabok
Seeds = Plant Fey
Wind Spirits = Wind Fey
Flame Fey = Campfire

@ Wix: I'm sooo confused. Are you trying to make a language for Phaedoras? A culture? Hunh?[/ooc]

Kieru: You stop in the center of camp. Most of the southerners have backed away from your group, but you can hear one Nyamm who sounds quite desperate as he speaks in hurried northern lunian. "Wake up peace-walker! They are here! Spirits guide me, wake up!" Finally, he breaks into a run, desperate to get away from the area.

Zan: You look up, but find yourself alone by the fire. Some 15 feet oof, you see the "intruders" Minras was urging you to avoid. Surrounded by a small company of lightly-armed miners are two figures, one towering, the other small. The towering figure is a kiag, scourge of the north. Standing about 6'1â,¬Â with his slouch, his face is deep red and is marked by many scars from vicious battles. A gnarled oak club hangs by his side and he is covered with a thick layer of heavy hides. Around the gray feathers of his neck, you can see several small charms and trinkets. As you look at him he turns his head at you and you can see his eyes. His large, golden eyes bore into your soul with a look of hatred and hunger and you quickly turn your attention to the smaller figure. Clearly a nyamm, the character wears a white cloak and holds a twisted black staff. His hood is pulled too low to see his face, but by the way the prospectors watch him, it's clear he is with the kiag, probably a slave. Thankfully, the kiag is no longer paying attention to you. Instead, he is watching a figure that moves out of one of the tents.

Kieru: A small figure approaches your group, probably twimi. One of your escorts says "Lady Natynas, these... they said they were invited here."
A voice, clearly twimi replies "I'll eat your entrails! I sent for a shaman, not a spirit-blasted kiag! Are you trying to kill me?!"
The nyamm begins to apologize, but is cut off by Garak's cold screeching. "Tell these weaklings who I am and what I will do to anyone who steps out of line!"

[ic=Kieru]"Patience, Garak. It is difficult to translate with so many speaking at once." Kieru carefully replies before switching back over to northern lunian. "He wants you to know that he is Garak, spiritbinder of the Deragai clan. According to him, there has been a disturbance amongst the spirits. We are here to find out why."[/ic]

"An' what in bunting blazes..." Zan curses as he gets up seeing the kiag. Zan, -abost as tall as the kiag- picks up his staff and bag of salt and heads over to the kiag's nyamm priest who is currently speaking to a little twimi. Why does a Kiag want to know what is wrong with the land? he thinks to himself.

[ooc]No problem Wix. I'm glad you're so enthusiastic. ^_^
1) Quote from intro on Realifin.com "Witchdoctors, on the other hand, use their innate powers of mojo to bind spirits into physical objects, tearing them out of the spirit world. These totems allow the witchdoctors to release the powers of the tortured spirit within to produce devastating effects."
2) Northern Lunian (a.k.a. Lunian) and Shienaii[/ooc]

Kieru: A large person approaches. Long strides... light steps.
The sounds of clinking jewelry surrounds Lady Natynas' voice. "It is strange to see a kiag without bloodshed, but resistance would be pointless. I will let you both investigate as much as you wish, I only ask that you take whatever you find... oh, you've arrived."

Zan: You approach the group largely unnoticed. As you get within the last few yards, the kiag and the twimi both turn and notice you. The twimi lady stands about 3'6", tall for her kind. Red-brown hair covers her body, and her longhair is clipped together so if forms a thick cascade down her back. Dressed in silk, and adorned with a number of earrings and other jewels, she is clearly quite rich. Seeing you, she says in a squeaky voice "Oh, you've arrived. These sbiritbinders have come to investigate the same thing I hired you for. I'll be with you in a moment."

Kieru: So quietly that even you barely hear, Garak clacks his beak and scoffs "They hire nimunbella... weaklings."
Natynas returns to her previous train of thought "As I was saying, you are free to search as you will as long as you do no harm nor hindrance and that you take whatever is causing this "disturbance." As I'm sure you know, I am Lady Twanimi Natynas. I advise you to come to me before you do anything... disruptive."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shailikanomisonakai: Darkness... to go in the light is death. So cold under the earth. Like a tomb. Shaili the nimunbella stands up, shivering. This frozen cave is nothing but a death trap. What possessed you to crawl under the waterfall using the hide of that dead deer anyway? And why was there an untouched dead deer lying by the edge of the stream anyway? the whole thing was like a dream. But this is reality. Your calloused hand finds a stalagmite in the gloom. Behind you, the frozen light emanates like a beacon of death. Turning, you can see the horrid holes in the ceiling around the glowing crystal. The deerskin sits beneath like a fleshy lure. If only you could get the skin, you might be able to escape... or at least curl up. A shiver runs down your body again. You'll freeze if you don't find a fire soon. Spiders... blankets of them... to go in the light is death... Only the frozen passage of darkness is safe. Deeper into the earth. Like a tomb.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kianak: You sit on a stone by the waterfall, eating an early dinner and gazing into the depths of the waterfall. The twinkling light shines out curiously. There are many mysteries in Phaedoras, investigating each would be too dangerous. After finishing a chalky piece of hard bread, you get up and begin to journey northward once more. Ever on the road is the way of the wanderer.

"This one says we may look, but only if we don't...'harm or hinder.'" Kieru says to Garak, his mocking tone conveying his own distaste toward the diminutive twimi. "She claims to be one of significant power, but," Kieru grins again, "I'm afraid my eyes fail me."[/ic]

[ooc]Just fyi, Zan can understand all of the speech going on between Garak and Kieru. Garak and Kieru are speaking in Shienaii.[/ooc]

Zan & Kieru: Garak laughs and agrees "All right. That's why I brought you. I'm going to go take a look around... hold this." With a shrug of his shoulders, his layers of furs fall to the ground to reveal his thick, muscular frame. Stretching, he leaps up from the ground, blasting wind downward with his enormous gray wings. Flying upward, he looks down and Zan can see arcs of electricity running from claw to claw. A few more moments and he is gone. Flying up the mountain.

Lady Natynas lets out a long breath and snaps her fingers. Two of the guards go off toward a tent. The twimi noble turns to address Zan. "Now, we can talk, peace-walker. I trust you can understand me? Pyal weh nitan Minmikan?"

"I don't know why we came here, nor what motivates him to continue." Locating the furs, the nyamm places them in a heap before him and takes a seat amidst the snow, keeping his body beneath his cloak and his face sunken deep within its cowl. The gentle breeze swirling about him causes the furs to smoothly ripple and flow, and beneath his garments Kieru's fur bristles as another thought occurs to him. [ic=Kieru]Curse that wretched buzzard...he knows as well as I do that I cannot see!

Remaining seated, Kieru scoops a handful of the snow beneath his cloak into his thin hand. Slipping his arm outside of his cloak, the nyamm can't help but notice the agitating itching and tingling which rushes down the exposed limb as it is struck by the weak winter sunlight. Leaning forward, he brings his arm beneath the shade of his cloak's cowl, and slips the snow-filled hand inside the wide hood as the prickling sensation diminishes to a slight irritation.

And to think, I am only a few feet from my own kin, and yet they treat me as a they would a kiag.

Slowly eating the frigid snow to quench his thirst, Kieru pauses to breathe deep the fresh air, scented like that from a fresh rainfall, provided by his cloak. The white fur on his exposed arm, sharply contrasting to the black and brown coats of the nyamm around him, is mingled with shades of grey and black from weeks of travel.

I haven't had a decent bath in months...even my wind can't fully conceal my own stench...

Slipping his hand back beneath his cloak, Kieru begins to scrub his body with the fast-melting snow, his thin frame quivering as he surrenders his warmth for hygene.

If Garak saw this, he may kill me...I am already 'weak' in his eyes.

His body now drenched in chilling water and slush, the nyamm pulls his cloak tighter around his shivering frame. His teeth, white through lack of food rather than cleanliness, begin to violently chatter before he locks his jaw in an attempt to mask his discomfort from the ears of any nearby nyamms. Brushing the snow away from the dead grass beneath his cloak, Kieru once again brings a hand to his face, but this time carries with it a handful of dead, yellow grass.

The least they could do is feed me. Then I wouldn't be so 'weak.'

His hand hovers before his face for a few moments until, with a nervous gulp, Kieru stuffs the dead grass into his mouth. Slowly, reluctantly, he chews his excuse for a meal and swallows, fighting the urge to vomit on the spot as the disgusting mulch slides down his throat.

I have to get away from Garak, even if it means finding a new mentor. It's becoming more and more evident that he will kill me as soon as my services are no longer necessary...[/ic]

(Noon)-Zan: "If you insist, peace-walker." Natynas follows the gigantic pacifist back to her tent. Ducking to enter, you find that the tent is only about 4' tall and half of the floorspace is occupied by a high-quality cot. The twimi noble stops outside and says "I'd think you'd prefer the open air..." She leaves her sentence unfinished, suggesting that you should offer your name.

(Noon)-Kieru: "So sad. eating grass?" A high pitched voice from behind startles you. Normally able to hear anyone within ten yards, the speaker must have the stealth of an owl to sneak up on you. The high pitched voice sounds almost like a twimi, but it is much more cheerful and less... substantial, more fleeting. "You might want to try the berries, they taste better." The voice giggles as you feel a stream of blueberries pour into your lap. Certainly not a twimi.

(Unknown)-Shaili: You stop and focus on the scene. A cave. Yes, under the waterfall. Cold. Icicles drip water from the ceiling and a cold wind blows down the dark tunnel. Spiders... even now they wait in their burrows, waiting in the light. Light. A pool of soft, blue light flows from the central point in a large crystal in the ceiling. Around the crystal are small holes, only a few inches wide... burrows. You lean against a large stalagmite and look back the way you came. The soft hide of the deer sits on the edge of the illuminated cave floor, waiting where you dropped it in a panic... waiting like bait. You can hear the waterfall from beyond a hole in the upper cave wall behind the light. Flashing images of you climbing through the hole, wings scraping on the rock, eagerly seeking the light. Perhaps it would be worth it to try and run past the crystal to climb out.. no. The icy water would kill you, you'd need the deerskin and they'd never let that go... greedy, greedy spiders. Safer here in the darkness... down the tunnel of ice...

(Sunset)-Kianak: Oh, how beautiful the northern forests are in the evening. It'll probably get cold soon, might even snow... wait... is that smoke? Yes, smoke, not to far off either. Probably from a camp fire. But friend or foe? Kiag are said to live on this mountain.

[ic=Kieru]Shocked that one would do such an act with no motivation to the likes of him, the nyamm's jaw moves wordlessly before he finally forms words. "Th-thank you...but why give such things to me? Surely you know that I am with the kiag." While taking no action to eat the berries, Kieru does allow one of his hands to slip from his cloak and touch the small fruits. Tilting his head slightly, the nyamm tries to gain a better bearing on this new acquaintance as he listens to its response.[/ic]

"Forgot you were so small..." Zan says quietly, looking in the tent while Natyas was speaking. He turns back to her, "It's Zan, Lady Natyas, and you can call me as such." He turns to look back at the nyamm priest eating grass. Shifting his eyes to the woman he says calmly, "I can't put any trust in the spiritbinder and his party. However, if they want to help, we should let them, but we should always outnumber them," he says with a strange air to his voice. He stops for a moment turning his eyes to the nyamm now rubbbing snow on himself, "for our own saftey of course."
Nodding to the Lady he takes out his clay jug and asks playfully, "So, what did you think I found?" He smiles and starts drinking a steady stream of his wine.

[ooc]The details of Kiru's actions are dificult to make out at that range, I'd like to give Sen the final say on whether thay (his actions) are visible.[/ooc]
(Noon)-Zan: Sir Zan, I do not think you've found anything of interest yet. I hired you for protection against... otherworldly dangers. If you wish, I can show you the site where we've been having the most difficulty.

(Noon)-Kieru: The voice giggles again with bubbling joy, almost like the tinkling of bells, "I don't see a kiag here! You're funny. Have some berries, I know you're hungry." Ears almost wiggling to pick up a subtle sound, you can't hear anything except the shifting boots and idle mutterings of the prospectors. You can easily pick up one say "Kiag tomin, wanip itchahs. Lorna twan pyin."

(Twilight)-Kianak: Walking up the steep slope, you folow the smoke trail up to a small clearing in the trees. You can hear the soft burble of a mountain stream nearby, posibly the same one you encountered lower down. In the center of the clearing is a large dark shape with one eye low to the ground that burns with an orange light. Smoke trails off of the shape, but you can't make out any more details in the gloom. Something apears inside the eye and calls out in a female voice, low and strong "Welcome Kianak, do not be afraid."

[ooc]They weren't meant to be visible in the first place, no. A cloak and a wide, deep cowl would hide a lot of that from that distance.[/ooc]

[ic=Kieru]"That is true, I am very hungry." Kieru quietly replies. "But the kiag will come back soon, and it is a spiritcrafter. It is not safe to be in my proximity when that happens." Plucking one of the berries from his lap, Kieru carefully sniffs the the fruit. "You never gave me your name...I'm Kieru." he says as, if the fruit smells normal, he hungrily devours the berry and reaches for more.[/ic]

Kieru: The blueberry is delicious, it's sweet and cold, causing your mouth to salivate more. Reaching out with your mind, you can feel a ripple of magical energies. The voice starts out high and gay, but it almost seems to flare to intensity and then burn out and become a weak, empty shell. "What are you doing? No, stop that! Oh no...
I can't stay here now, but you will come to me instead... A swift wind, like that of your cloak yet somehow different blows past and the sound of wind chimes rings in the distance. Rolling around in your palm, the blueberries still feel as fresh as ever.

[ic=Kieru]Kieru's face, a mask of puzzlement and confusion, snaps in the direction of the fleeting wind in time to directly listen to the ringing wind chimes.

A spirit?! What kind of spirit helps a witchdoctor?

Impulsively tilting his head toward the blueberries, the nyamm continues to eat the succulent fruits, slowly savoring their flavor for as long as he can.

It would only be disrespectful to leave the spirit's gift unaccepted...but what did I do to harm it? For that matter, why does it want me so badly? Wouldn't it want to seek out someone more powerful if anyone at all? It just doesn't make sense...[/ic]

Zan: Adjusting her dress, the twimi walks up the mountain to the site. Overhead you can see the kiag fly back to his slave.
The excavation site is a slice of the mountainside that has been cleared of a few trees and leveled off to a section of dry rocky soil. Against the mountain face is a stone wall, that makes the site itself a semi-circle. Various tools, picks and shovels, are lying around in piles, apparently there is no work today. In front of the wall is a large black rock with dark blue metallic veins running through it. Although some of it is exposed, it is clear that the majority of the boulder is encased in the earth.
"Impressive, isn't it? Enough sebayet ore to make a thousand weapons. Pokobru scouts managed to flag the meteor before we found it, but they lack the tools to excavate it, or so they say."
As you approach the glistening boulder, you can feel a pulse of magic. Please make a spiritcraft check.

Kianak: "I know about everything on this mountain, from the stones to the birds. My eyes see all, though not as much as they used to. Come inside, I have a stew cooking."

Kieru: Wing beats signal the approaching presence of Garak. With a blast of wind, you can hear the kiag land with a thump a few yards away. Talking excitedly, Garak seems overjoyed at his excursion "Stand up! I was right, this mountain is a nexus of magical energies. The impact site up the mountain acts like a gateway for the mountain's power. There are some runes I'd like you to see, you can eat lunch on the way up."

Slowly standing up, Kieru turns to face the direction of Garak's voice, his displease already evident on what little of his face is visible to the kiag before he even speaks. "There are three things wrong with that, the first and most noticeable being that I have yet to be told of any "impact". Secondly, I cannot see so long as that accursed sun reigns supreme, so any runes in broad daylight will have to wait until dusk. The last and most infuriating, however, is that you are mentioning something about a meal when you haven't fed me in three days, and you won't let me go out of your sight after dusk to find my own food!"[/ic]

Kieru: Garak remains silent for a few moments before breaking out into cold, screechy laughter. You can hear some of the prospectors take a few steps backwards. "Weakling! I offer you food and you complain? I'd have thought your spirit would have broken by now. Since you insist on questioning that which you could learn through waiting, I'll help myself to your lunch. Now come!"

Kianak: "Indeed I do, young one. We may speak inside." As you approach, you realize that the large shape is actually a house, though you can't tell much beyond that.

He never had food, that much I can be certain. He knows he slipped up, and that is a mistake he will try hard to cover up. But such rashness cannot hide his weakness. One day he will err, and my claws will soak in his blood before his feathers even reach the ground.[/ic]

Zan: Natynas walks up and pats the meteorite. "The pokobru were nice enough to split the profits with us if we helped them dig it up. We'll probably break it once it's all clear and ship it down the coast to Minmiko. We haven't found any buyers for the ore there, though. If you want, I can give you a good price for a chunk of the ore, I'll throw in a purrabok head too." At this, the strange twimi begins laughing in her high, squeaky voice.

The aura is not coming from the rock, it's coming from the smooth cliff wall.

Kieru: Following Garak's footsteps, you begin climbing a steep mountain trail. After a few slips and scrapes, accompanied by Garak's laughter, you reach a flat section of packed dirt. You can hear "Lady" Natynas talking with someone up ahead. Garak may have been lying about food, but he certainly wasn't lying about the power of this place. The magical energies ripple out of the mountain, a sure sign of intersecting ley-lines. Spiritcraft check please.

Kianak: The figure moves from the doorway and you walk through the soft snow to the glowing entrance. The smoke from the wooden cabin blows overhead, no longer detectable in the air. Stepping through the threshold, a blast of warmth from a roaring fire hits you in the chest while the scent of cooking meats and strange spices fills your lungs. You stand in a simple room with smooth, wooden floorboards. Candles flicker from around the room and a large, stone fireplace sits against the far wall. A dim hallway leads off to the right, and a quaint kitchen makes up most of the left side of the room. A crude table with a few stools rests in the center of the room and a stone cauldron sits above the fire. To your immediate right are a few coat hooks with a pair of tall, wooden sandals beneath them. Lighting a candle on the table, you can see the figure who beckoned you. A soft green robe is wrapped around the wrinkled body of some kind of a person whom you've never seen the like. Similar to a reptile-man of the south, the person has a male frame but has a face that seems feminine. Wrinkled dark blue skin covers its body instead of scales, and bright yellow swirls of color run up its neck, over its bald head and finally spiral over its cheeks like an intricate, garish mask. The mysterious figure looks at you from under large, heavy eyelids. "I'm glad you came. After you take off your coat, you can have a seat. We have much to discuss. My name is Puluv, do not be afraid."

Shaili: Roll call. Are you there?

[ooc]I'd like to point out that the updated shaman class is on Raelifin.com (see sig).
Spirit Sense blocks out all other perception, so you can't see what Garak (the kiag) is doing in both words at the same time.
I'm going to work on getting excerpts from the Voodoo chapter and the Shamanism chapter up next.

Oh, I also thought I'd point out that if I stop a post when you could continue. I'm saying that this is an opportunity to select a different action than continuing. If you want to continue in situations like this, post it so I know that you just haven't read it yet. This is particularly applicable at the moment in Shaili's thread.[/ooc]

Zan: Stepping mentally into the spirit world is like leaping into a roaring fire. Screams echo in your mind's eye and you're sure for a moment that you're being torn apart. Calming yourself, you focus and form a barrier against the horrific suffering in the area. It only takes you a few seconds to realize where the source is. Standing amidst rows of insane spirits is a lone soul, untouched by the waves of pain. A horrible, gut-wrenching scream fills the air as the energy of one of the tortured is sapped, leaving a writhing husk of misery.

Kieru: You can feel the subtle flows of the ley-lines and as you concentrate further you can feel a large magical presence beneath you. Though this spot is a place of power, you can feel something else below. Taking a step forward, you realize that the pulse is stronger near the wall. You can almost hear a faint singing, a song pure and sad... "Iegakai, yanai*!" Garak's voice rings in your ears as a small thunderclap bangs just a few yards ahead. You manage to hear light footsteps of a twimi running away from the kiag, no doubt after seeing him flex his power. "You've had your moment. The runes will only last a bit."

* "Iegakai, yanai!" = I am your king/master. Lit: I rule, you submit.

Kianak: "Your path here was fate, you know. For those who can see its subtle web, it is clar that something is amiss." Puluv turns around and begins to tend the near-done stew. Puluv's large, thick tail is also patterned with the bright yellow swirls. "I am a seer. For centuries, my family has lived on this mountain." Turning back to you, Puluv asks "Would you like water or tea?"

Shaili:
Fumbling in the dark, you make sure to keep your hand on one wall, so you don't turn yourself around. After a bit, the faint light behind you is hidden from view. An icy wind blows down the hall and the faintest whispers can be heard farther along. However, once the wind stops, nothing can be heard. Moving forward, you keep your antennae out for any sound. As you walk forward, you can hear a faint cracking noise, like that of grinding stone.

Kianak: "Similar. I am a Mopuvu, a race blessed with second sight. Though I have no connection to the spiritbinders, they also may develop prophetic ability." Puluv goes and retrieves a kettle from a shelf and pours some water into it from a stone jug.

Kieru: You approach and you can hear the crackle of electricity slowly fade. Garak's footsteps walk behind you and you hear him unfurl his wings blocking out the sun and casting you into shadow. "You are sheltered."

With a shake of his head the nyamm's white longhair falls into place at shoulder length, and he quickly reaches behind his head to work at the knot securing his red blindfold.

Slipping the knot free, Kieru hangs onto his blindfold in one hand as he opens his eyelids. Taking in the world through violet eyes, the witchdoctor gazes at whatever lies ahead of him, then glances over his shoulder in the direction from whence they came...[/ic]

Kianak: "I believe that more than fate had a hand in deciding your path. The thief you sought was drawn by a will not her own, and for whatever reason, your paths were made to intersect." Puluv hangs the kettle by the fire and, after stirring the stew, takes a seat on one of the wooden stools. "However, I do know where this power resides. Have you ever heard of the Elixir of Demons?"

Kieru: Despite the shade, the light is quite bright to your unadjusted eyes. Just a few feet in front of you is a wall of stone, but all along the wall are glowing purple glyphs, writing of some sort. Garak coldly says "The writing is magic sensitive. It will fade soon. I was hoping you learned to read somewhere in that village of savages you grew up in."
Because the text is pictographical in nature, you may make an untrained Scribe check to decipher the runes. Scribe is a new skill that is effectively... literacy. It encompasses decipher script and forgery.

Kieru: "Yes, there is space beyond the wall. I believe the runes indicate some sort of door, but I can't find it. The rock itself is stronger than normal, these pathetic beings have no idea how to go past it or what it guards. They think that their precious star metal is valuable, untold treasures wait beyond this wall."

Kianak: "In the elder time, there was a great war. A demon of a size unfathomable rent through the walls between worlds and sought nothing but darkness and destruction. The elders, beings of light and harmony stood against the demon and used their power to turn him to ash. The demon, sensing death approaching, tore out his heart and cast it to Phaedoras. Though his body was destroyed, the demon began to regenerate from his precious organ. Kinpar, king of the elders felt the growing evil and smashed the heart into a pulp which turned to rock. The land itself wove barriers around the stone heart, preventing the evil from ever returning.

Though they are ignorant to its history, the neighboring tribes call this stoneheart mountain. The nexus of earth magic is what caused my family to journey here in generations past. However, the earth magic was not enough to overcome the evil of the rock, simply to hold it and over the years the heart of the mountain has become filled with terrors beyond the imagination and treasures from heroes who sought power.

You see, the demon's blood, also known as the elixir of demons, has the ability to grant unimaginable strength, power and immortality. Countless champions have sought the elixir for one cause or another, but the blood has a terrible price, for anyone who drinks it becomes a living spirit and severs their tie to the earth opening themselves to the horrors beyond."

Zan: Soon, another spirit approaches, followed by a smaller cacophony of wailing souls. Through force of will, you are able to condense the two clusters into two individuals... Witchdoctors.

Seeking peace of mind, you try to encompass the surrounding area, feeling the multitude of plant and animal spirits around you. Aside from the two unwanted pricks of evil, the land seems whole and healthy. However, at the edge of your mind, something seems wrong. After searching for a short period, you cease your efforts.

As you open your eyes and return to your body, you can see the two witchdoctors talking between themselves, the kiag granting shade to the nyamm with his wings. On the previously blank stone wall there are now a multitude of glowing runes. You think you may be able to sort them out, given a moment or two. Natynas has apparently left you alone with these two, who defile the sacred for nothing more than personal power.

[ooc]Okay, I'll spell it out. Garak (the kiag) and Kieru (the nyamm) are both witchdoctors. Witchdoctors capture spirits in totems where they gain the ability to torture them to produce what are, in effect, spells. To simplify the conflict between shamans and witchdoctors, pretend you're a druid and witchdoctors are  animal testers. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_testing) That is, if testing animals gave you the ability to cast spells. @_@

Also, Natynas isn't there.[/ooc]

Zan: From what you know, the runes don't seem to be modern. It is likely that they were written in an old dialect.

Kieru: "If you can't feel the power, you are weaker than I thought. Now, if you have no skill at reading this, I may be forced to break through. Close your eyes." Garak folds his wings and pulls on his furs.

Kianak: The ketle begins to wail and Puluv gets up to take it off its hook. While taking out some polished stone cups and a box of herbs and spices, the mopuvu continues talking. "As I said, your fate and the fate of the thief have been tampered with. The girl who stole from you was pulled under the mountain by a force hidden from me. Your meeting, if you could call it that, was not pure chance and I believe that whatever lies beneath stoneheart had a very specific goal in its plotting. If its purpose was an item you carried, your danger may have been passed onto the girl. However, if the goal was to ensnare you, you may be in further danger... I hope you like mint, I'm low on everything else." Puluv walks back over to the table and hands you a steaming mug of tea.

Either of you may roll initiative.

However, it would be quite easy for anyone who drank the elixir to bend fate in such a way. Do not despair though, it is unlikely that such a being has unlimited power. Combat: Garak, seizing the opportunity, lunges forward and draws his gnarled club, swinging outward in a wide arc. Zan tries to leap backwards, but the blow beats his left arm with a nasty crunch. (no in-game penalty) 6 damage.

Targeting Garak, Kieru manages to hit Zan with a huge blast of icy wind. 3 cold damage to both Garak and Zan. Numb and out of breath, Zan realizes that his wings are frozen stiff and are likely dead.

Flinging a burst of air from the end of his gnarled staff, Kieru also manages to hit Garak first, but the powerful Kiag holds his ground and simply takes a few steps toward the nimunbella (line ends).

Garak screeches "Watch your aim!"

It's Zan's turn.

I have a small garden out front and I can catch a good supply of trout further down the river. I'll make sure to save some for when you leave."

Walking back over the the fireplace, Puluv changes the subject. "Though my eyes see far, I cannot see where you are from. Do you have a family to return to after your travels?"

They wouldn't want me back if they ever learned what happened. I have brought much dishonor to my name. Kianak gives a low mournful sigh then takes another drink from his cup. Kianak: Ignoring your question, Puluv stirs the stew quietly and then speaks in an uneasy tone. "Kianak... I want you to know that everything I've said has been true. If you have the strength to face the darkness, try to remember my words..." Your vision crosses and then gets blurry, you suddenly feel like you've stayed up all night. Please make a fortitude save, DC 10.

Garak: Stepping back from the stone wall, Garak glares at Kieru and grimaces as he is tormented by the foul spirit. (Another 1 wisdom damage) With much force, Garak's arm swings downward. As his blow connects with the rocky soil, the earth erupts in a line of destruction, like a giant claw smote it. Ground shaking, the line blasts under Kieru's feet, sending shards of rock flying upward. Zan can see the earthquake continue and smash the miner's meteorite into shards of ore.

Kianak: Puluv turns away from you and walks into the kitchen area. Your eyelids droop but you manage to keep them open.
Just a little longer... You have another full turn then you must make another save DC 14.

Combat: Garak laughs a laugh that no longer has an element of fear. "You have no strength remaining! I can see it in the way you shake. I could crush you with a thought..."

Suddenly, the noise of grating stone becomes much louder and stone wall behind Garak begins to show incredibly small cracks in it. Kieru: Fumbling around the stone, you manage to step through the portal into the inky interior of the mountain. The first thing you notice is a sickening temperature drop. With the sun at its zenith, even the frosty mountains are bearable with low wind, but inside it feels as cold as a winter night. Within seconds you also notice the presence of a light wind flowing from within. Perhaps another opening can be found be found nearby.

Kianak: You feel yourself falling... With a jolt, you hit the cold floor. Your body instinctively pushes up, trying to resist gravity. Stiff arms don't respond easily to the call, lifting maybe an inch then dropping. In fact, your entire body feels stiff as a board. Your eyes open and you realize that you are no longer within the warm cabin with Puluv. Icy darkness surrounds you and you hear the faint drip of water. With a strained push, you peel your head off the hard stone and try to find a comfortable sitting position. In the dark, alone.

Zan: Garak walks over to his armor and pulls it back over his hunched back, fastening the ties that were designed to unhook with a simple jerk. The hulking avian glares at you from the corner of his eyes. "Give thanks to your ancestors, for you are lucky that you live." (The literal translation is a bit different, but that's the general idea) The savage then stands and leaps through the dark doorway in the mountain.

Kianak: As you stand, bones cracking from time spent on the hard floor, a blast of frozen air hits you and chills your already frozen body. It would make sense that if there's wind, it must come from an entrance, perhaps you can find some light that way. Groping around your person, you find that all of your equipment remains, that which was not stolen, that is. Carried on the wind you can hear a faint sound... almost like singing... The dripping water doesn't sound too far off, but it's not in the same direction as the wind's source...

Kieru: Feeling your away along the left wall, you hear Garak leap through the opening. He seems to ignore the fact that just a minute before he was in heated combat as he says "You may as well try taking a look around, weakling. My eyes are as good as blind in here."

Most of the Party: The invisible spirit begins to glow, creating an eerie will-o-wisp in the frosty cave. Golden light reflects off of ice the encrusts various corners of what now appears to be an artificial enclosure. A few square pillars are placed regularly throughout the medium sized room. Devoid of any trappings or architecture save the pillars, the smooth, blank room has three exits. In both of the far corners are open archways that go to the left and the right, on the far wall is a large stone door.

[spoiler=Kieru]Please make a listen check.[/spoiler]

Kianak:
The frozen air is harsh on your stiff joints and after taking a drink from the spout of one of your water skins and stretching, you begin to fumble blindly through the dark. The voice on the wind never does seem to get louder, as if the source of the song, if it is a song, is moving away. As you climb over rock walls, stalactites and patches of ice you realize that you're headed generally downward. As you nearly bash your head on a low overhang, you enter a large room where even your footsteps seem to echo. The wind is stronger here, forcing you to hunch low and hold your wings in tight.

Please make a listen check.
