Title: [September] CBGeopardy!
Post by: Matt Larkin (author) on September 05, 2008, 05:17:11 PM
[note=Rules]1. There are six categories, with five point values in each category. The game lasts until all clues have been answered or passed on, or until the end of the month, whichever comes first. At the end of the game session, the winner receives a sig trophy (hopefully to be designed by someone else ;))

2. The first one with the correct answer will get the points. Answers must be phrased in the form of a question. If you give an incorrect answer you must wait at least 1 hour before attempting it again.

3. You must wait at least one hour to answer a question about your own setting. You cannot select your own setting when picking a category unless there are no other options.

4. When you give an answer, also give your choice and point value for the next question.

5. If a question has not been correctly answered after 24 hours, we'll move on, with the a question randomly chosen by the host.

6. There will be a Double Jeopardy round only if we finish the first early enough in the month.[/note]
In honor of the old trivia thread (http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?51083), I'm starting a new form game. I will host the first month's game, and hopefully someone else will be interesting in doing future months. Ish and I talked about it a little bit, and we hope it'll spark interest in some of the settings of our members. So we really encourage everyone to play.

For this first game, the first person to post a response will get to pick the category and point value.

We will accept that answer (in light of LC's commentary), as that is a name for the world. We would also have accepted the Cardan name "What is Marebo?".

200 for Atlantis!

You guys can actually pick the next category in the same post as you give the answer. I think that'll be the best way to keep things moving.

I'd like for you to design the winner's badge trophy

And yeah, if you ran the next one that'd be swell ;). I had intended it to be a monthly contest--the idea being each badge would indicate the month. Since we finished so fast I had been beginning to consider doing a double jeopardy round after all.

What do you think is best?

[ic=Karros for 1000]This is the proper name for the time of mist.[/ic]

Regardless, as I mentioned earlier, I will not be around to run it for November or December, so whether you run it or we draft the winner of the each previous month to do so... :demon:

Actually, I had a few other thoughts about the contest, since it seems to have gone well. I may PM you later tonight to try to work out whether we've got the best method or could improve it.

I know this answer, but I'm going to let someone else answer so I have more time to design the badge and write up questions.  :) :) :)

And I think a Double Jeopardy would be a good idea, because it would give everyone an opportunity to catch up to Raelifin.  Maybe something like, Tell what the topic will be, and everyone can send in their wagers to you, then ask the question, and everyone has to send in an answer within the next six hours or something?  I dunno how it would really work w/ Double Jeopardy...

1000 for Raelifin!   :rambo:

Since the winner agrees, I will go ahead and do a double round, to bring us closer to the end of the month.

I have not written the questions yet. However, I will go ahead and chose the 5 categories, so Raelifin can pick the one he wants, and the value (400, 800, 1200, 1600, 2000).

Categories: Calisenthe, Eclipse :ninja:, Panisadore, Phaedorás, Wonders

Question: Should the contest continue to be open to everyone, or limited to the (seven) players already playing?

Higgs Boson $800
Ishmayl $15,200
LordVreeg $20,400
Luminous Crayon $1200
Nomadic $10,200
Raelifin $5800

Though we finished only halfway through the month, I do not believe this forum game is well-suited to a Final Jeopardy round.

[spoiler=My Reasoning]The Final Jeopardy round, as explained in Wikipedia, relies on contestants having 30 seconds to write an answer after wagering as much money as desired. However, a time limit would be questionable on a forum, where not all participants have constant access. Without a time limit, however, it is merely a matter of looking up the question (as is part of the idea), so the round really just turns in to a "everybody that feels like it doubles their money" round. The winner only changes if the current winner fails to look up the answer within 24 hours (or whatever).[/spoiler]

Therefore, Lord Vreeg wins!

The winner may collect winnings via your local turtle bank. Cash prizes are redeemable in any of the featured settings of this month's contest. All prizes subject to imperial law, autocratic whim, theocratic mandate, or general tribal consensus as applicable. Void where prohibited by law or gamemaster. The CBG is not responsible for any loss of limb, life, or sanity resulting from this contest, nor for the actions of any deities angered by the winner's use of the prize. The CBG is not responsible for ensuring that vampire lords render the aforementioned prizes unto the winner. Please enjoy responsibly. No turtles were harmed in the making of this episode.

Local Turtle Banks may or may not be open, depending on the laziness of Overlords and the respective availability (or lack thereof) of trophies.

Just letting you know that I've got about half the questions I need to run a game, but I'm thinking, so we don't tire out both players and hosts (and run out of subjects, too!), I'll start in October?  What do you guys think?

Also, Geopardy Trophy is getting there, but it's hard to incorporate "Superior Knowledge of Campaign Settings" and "The CBGeopardy" into one little 22x22 icon. :)
Title: [September] CBGeopardy!

Yeah, I figured the contest would be monthly anyway. If it's too much info, maybe you could just make the badge "Sep CBGeopardy" or something similar?

If I was to run another, I would had to start plumbing the forums, since I've mostly cleaned through the wiki. Of course, there's more questions for already chosen settings...
Title: [September] CBGeopardy!

Right, we should probably put a 3-month timer on going back to a previously used setting.
Title: [September] CBGeopardy!
Post by: Elemental_Elf on September 17, 2008, 02:02:19 PM
Quote from: IshmaylRight, we should probably put a 3-month timer on going back to a previously used setting.

I propose we use a different system. Why not put a 2 month/jeopardy episode 'timer' on each setting but only for the round of jeopardy it was used for (i.e. regular and double). Meaning, Celtricia was used for Double Jeopardy that means for the next two games it can't be used in Double Jeopardy.

I propose this mostly because I think, quite quickly, we'll run out of detailed settings (10 a month will whittle down what we have quickly). Plus it brings a little stability to the games, knowing that even though you missed that question about such-and-such setting, the knowledge you accrued during your search will help you in the next game. Further, it just makes the host's life a little easier in that he doesn't need to constantly search for 10 new settings each game.
Title: [September] CBGeopardy!

I think EE has a good point and a good suggestion.  I'm going to plan on that, I believe.  Also, Vreeg has a worthwhile point as well.  Hopefully, the settings we choose have at least 10 subjects from which to choose questions. :)

While I could edit it to be a single thread, this allows whoever runs the contest for the month to edit the first post with updated scores and remaining questions. Since it won't necessarily always be me or Ish running the game. In fact, at one point the idea was the winner would inherit the position of host.

Also, different threads keeps it in line with the prior contests on the site, though I didn't really think to put it in that forum.

Title: [September] CBGeopardy!
Post by: Matt Larkin (author) on September 21, 2008, 07:44:15 AM
Perhaps. I see three marks against it.

First, any chat-based program, as with awards, faces the difficulty of getting multiple people, spread around the world, all online at the same time even once, much less multiple times.

Second, it requires players to dedicate a more significant amount of time to playing. While I could come in and check for email notices regularly, I wouldn't want to just sit in a chat room for twenty or thirty minutes very often.

And third, part of the idea is to encourage people to read other settings. The live format would probably even more limit it than PbP.

But then, there are downsides to either choice.
Title: [September] CBGeopardy!

BTW, I never used any search function or such.  I will admit to a job/career path involved with data aquisition, however...and I am NOT for the chat based ideal.

I see chat as more of a fun thing. Every once in awhile if anyone is active in the room it throws out a question from the wiki and the first person to answer gets some points. Throw in a scoreboard and you have some side entertainment.
