If there are any CBG members who'd like to enter to win a prize contest for the January Mapping Challenge at the Cartographers' Guild, now is the time to join, if you're not a member.
I'm thinking of Nomadic, among others who should seriously consider this.
I'm bringing this up as it looks like I will be the one sponsoring the challenge. Map Challenge requirements as far as I know will be create a full color 24" x 36" map design at 100 ppi minimum resolution (up to 300 ppi) - not sure of subject matter yet. The winning entry, chosen by Guild members will have their map printed in full color at large format, laminated and shipped (worldwide) to that recipient.
Because I am the sponsor, I will abstain from participation that month. So you've got one less competitor to worry about! :P
I hope some of the CBG members consider it, and if you're not a member of the cartographers' guild - now is the time to join!

I'll participate... As long as the challenge isn't about creating local areas!
I might actually participate. Having almost finished a map with the Kapn I am thinking about mapping the entire world of Meishgon (Karros) as well as its cities and other such areas. Probably gonna need to read up on some tutorials (most of my maps are old style parchment or black and white... not color; meh it'll be good for me... color maps look better to your players). Sure though, why not.
Wow, 24" by 36". That would be pretty sweet. With all the work Nomad's been helping me with, I might be able to do just that.
Bwahahahaha!
Just for you information...the printer I use to print the winning map entry is a Canon IPF8100 44" wide large format inkjet printer using 100 year archival inks onto 190 gram Satin Gloss photo paper. Even though it does an outstanding job printing 100 ppi maps, its capable of printing at 720 x 720 dpi (its lowest actual resolution), 1440 x 1440 dpi and 2880 x 2880 dpi. It makes awesome maps! I also laminated with 5 mil UV-resistant lamination film both sides.
I don't just use some CAD plotter, this print system is generally used by pro photographers.
So if you win, you can expect an awesome prize!

Dude, if I don't win, how much would you charge to print and ship mine anyway? I live in LA.
I charge $2.99 per square foot, so a 24 x 36 is $17.94, but I can print to any size up to 44" x 50 feet. My laminator is limited to 36" wide, and a 24 x 36 lamination is $3.60, shipping in a tube costs me about $13 UPS (that includes price of tube), a bit less and slower USPS in US, Canada is a bit more, and Europe is about 50% higher USPS only, but not crazy expensive. I have an ecommerce site, but I use Paypal and Emails to handle any privately printed maps, since sizes can be so different, I can't price every possible job, except quoting it one map at a time.
I prefer not to talk business on forums, I am just giving facts on costs, because you asked. Just PM me or send me an Email if you need to know more, or want a printing done and shipped.

Its official now, I am sponsoring this month's Mapping Challenge at the CG.
The theme is Create a Map for Print - anything goes! You need a regional map for your campaign world, a map of the capital port city, a dungeon, a stretch of wilderness or the ethereal realms of your mind - whatever the heck you need. If you don't want to do local areas, then don't.
The winning entry will have his/her map printed in full color at 24 x 36, laminated and shipped worldwide.
Good luck!

Oh, I've always wanted to have some sexy little Jade Stage maps to adorn my walls. When I finally get around to getting them drawn the way I like them, we will definitely talk business.
I wish I could take part but with the minimum size being as large as it is, photoshop would crash long before I got done.
So I posted the option after your's on the CG thread: how about 18 x 24 or 1800 x 2400 pixels, is that too much for your system? I can't offer smaller than that.

Yea that works, I did a test at that size with 10 layers filled with black, a clouds render only took a second or two... I can work with that.
