Title: Weird Science...
Post by: SA on June 05, 2006, 08:55:56 AM
A man regarding the Bronze Age from the perspective of our own modern era might look upon their technologies as hopelessly primitive, while a man from the perceived era might see our technologies as so astonishing as to seem impossible - doubtlessly magical and wholly beyond comprehension.  Indeed, who, in so far-flung a time, could have ever anticipated the wonders - and terrors - that our age would herald?  We, in our complacency, see our world as the norm, failing to realise the sheer fantasy of the environment we call home: horseless carts and iron birds powered by fire and the liquefied dead, windows that cast our images across the seas... devices no larger than a horse capable of incinerating a city.

Truly, it is an amazing place.

So I was wondering, what fantastic sciences and technologies have you, my fellow DMs, conjured from the depths of your minds?  To kickstart, here's one of my own, taken from my campaign setting.

Plasmoclast Energy
"...In fact, the power of the weapon is far more profound that. The IoValde had managed to design a device capable of transforming even the abstract nature of an object. For instance, say it was aimed at a chair. Not only could it transform the chair into another solid object, but it could also transform it into the sound of a chair. And by this I do not mean the sound a chair makes when it bumps against something, or the sound it makes (or rather, does not make) when it is motionless, but the very sound of a chair that has been turned into pure sound.

Conversely, they might target heat and transform it into a solid expression of heat, or target motion and transform it into the liquid expression of motion. This is not the limit of its scope â,¬' the possibilities are near endless.

But what is most frightening about this technology is that in its manipulation of abstracts it could even target thought. It could target things with no physical representation, like fear or the concept of winter (as opposed to winter itself), and change them into something else altogether. I have seen a manâ,¬,,¢s hatred blossom into a living, howling thing and burst free of his skull to raze a city to the ground. Words cannot adequately capture the madness â,¬' the sheer destructive power of this device."

Anybody else got a kickass technology they'd care to share?

I'll refer you to my silly, little thread (http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?6084.0) for one of my rather bland fantasy tech ideas.  It doesn't do anything particularly kick ass, unless you count creating an psuedo-sci-fi energy weapon without using d20 Future mechanics as kick ass.  Probably not.

By the way, why is this thread named "Plain Wierd..."?  The name is not very evocative of the fantasy tech theme of the thread.

Very true... it shall be changed!
