I am now searching for six players for a playtest of my mana point system. The campaign will be RP light, combat/trap heavy; it will be a Super Dungeon (think Diablo 1; one big dungeon that keeps going deeper and deeper). The story will be bare, but I'll do my best to ensure that the encounters are exciting.
I need six players, and I'm hoping to have the following classes in the party: paladin, bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, and wizard. That way, all of the classes get tested, but the group is not without a warrior or expert. The resources allowed will be PHB, DMG, and my MP system only. The game will start at 1st level and hopefully progress to 20th.
I know that PbP allows people to come and go at their whim, but I'd like (in addition to regular check ins) to devote a non-work non-school night where the players will be available to make frequent posts. Remember, it is 13 encounters per level and only 52 weeks in the year; one encounter per week will be very slow going (so I'd like to get through as many encounters as possible).
Please, let me know if you're interested. 6 players is all I need.
PS: It might be possible to extend testing to multiclass and prestige classed characters. The sorcerer and druid slots will thus be open to possible multiclassed or prestige classed characters (agian, using PHB and DMG resources only). Thanks.
Wait, are we talking about characters that start at level 1 and go to level 20?
Yes. On second thought, I will increase the XP and treasure so that level ups come quicker ... 260 encounters would be a lot.
I'd make it level up per 2 encounters. What's starting stats?
I'd like to be in on this.
What are the starting stats (point buy or roll)?
What material is allowed?
Any other variant rules being used?
Stats: Point Buy (32 points)
Material: PHB, DMG, and my MP system
Variant Rules: None; though I am considering "Charging Smite" in place of the paladin's mount, since the game won't be condusive to mounted combat.
If I'm going to accellerate leveling, it will be a level per full day of encounters. I'm shooting for 4 encounters per day, ranging from EL party average-3 to EL party average+2 (to get a good spread of easy and difficult encounters).
I'm in!
Well, I'd love to. If the 3E profiler gets back online anytime soon, you can count me in. I'm not sure what I'd play though... Maybe a sorcerer...
Anyway, if 3E doesn't come back online anytime soon, if I get a really good BBcode character sheet, then I'll be in anyway.
I have never done the PbP thing, so this might be the time to start.
Bard, maybe.
Well, that's 4 people, plus Raelifin (I don't know if he intends to join or not).
Please, in the mean time, read over the Mana System (it's in the Post Articles). Within the week I'll have my site up, so you'll be able to access the spell lists and domain lists. And ASAP, let me know what you're interested in playing: Crit and CYMRO have expressed interest in Sorcerer and Bard respectively.
I was thinking of making a druid
Quote from: Xeviat TranionWell, that's 4 people, plus Raelifin (I don't know if he intends to join or not).
Eh, probably not. I was just trying to help find a more realistic goal than a prospective 4 year, all combat game.
I'm in. I'd like to be the Paladin.
QuoteStats: Point Buy (32 points)
not[/i] up for a 2 or 3 year playtest :).
No, PHB standard is 4d6 drop the lowest, which averages out to 32 when you consider that around a third of those results are dropped by the PHB rules. Technically, if everyone's willing to use the default array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8; that's what the game was tested with), that would be the best.
If I level everyone after each day (4-5 encounters), I think things will work.
The default array is a 25 point buy.
If you would rather us use that array I have no problem with it.
nah, 4d6 drop lowest comes out to the default array, which can be bought with 25 points (i've tested this :()
unless you're saying "drop results with no roll lower than 12, or less than a +1 total mod" gives about a 32 point buy. i didn't test that...
[edit]
the average rolls of 4d6, drop the lowest, abandon rolls with no number >12, abandon rolls with a total mod of less than 2, is the standard array (15,14,13,12,10,8)
barring programming error.
(not that it necessarily matters)
The average on a 4d6 drop the lowest is 12.25; I've tested it as well. This rougly comes out to 5 12s and 1 13, which adds up to 25. But, 18s, 17s, 16s, and 15s are worth more, and there are no point values for rolls under 8 ... this skewed the results when I tested 4d6 drop the lowest x6; I ended up with a number close to 31.5.
I used 32 point buy for a long campaign; as long as you generate monsters with the default array, combats are balanced; creatures with standard 3 10s and 3 11s are 1 CR lower vs. 32 point buy characters.
For simplicity, I guess I'll go with default array (16s are just too expensive in 25 point buy).
Limetom's expressed interest in a Paladin;
Neptune a Druid;
Crit a Sorcerer;
CYMRO a Bard;
Brainface, supdadupa? Want to duke it out for the cleric and wizard?
QuoteFor simplicity, I guess I'll go with default array (16s are just too expensive in 25 point buy).
So, you mean 32? :confused1:
here's how yo dit, xeviat :)
[spoiler=IHAVESTRONGOPINIONS]
[note]caveat: I'm mostly assuming this is right because i came up with the method on the spot, and it came out matching the elite array with no tweaking at all. I also have the code for this, if anyone wants to check some
python code. :/[/note]
The average roll
is not 13,12,12,12,12,12
roll 4d6 drop the lowest, 6 times
then SORT the rolls, highest to lowest.
do it several times. add all the highest together, all the second highest together, etc. and take the average.
that is:
roll1: [17, 13, 12, 9, 6, 6]
roll2: [15, 14, 13, 12, 9, 3]
roll3: [14, 14, 14, 13, 12, 11]
roll4: [11, 9, 8, 7, 6, 6]--too low, ignore
avg = (17+15+14)/3, (13+14+14)/3, (12+13+14)/3, (9+12+13)/3, (6+9+12)/3, (6+3+11)/3
or an average stat roll of 15,13,13,11,9,8 for these 3 sets of rolls
(i just made these rolls up off the spot. but i made i program to do
ten thousand ability rolls, so i think i got it, barring logic errors :))
you're getting an average of 5 12s and 1 13, but you aren't
sorting, nor keeping it in an array. however, stat rolls don't come in 1 value, they come in 6 :)
minor trivia--the actual number of dropped ability rolls according to the phb came out to about 15%

Quote from: XevBrainface, supdadupa? Want to duke it out for the cleric and wizard?
meh, i got dregs.
brainface, I love you ... in that platonic brotherly sort of way (didn't men in plato's day have little boys ... scratch that). You're one of the first people in a long time to go the extra length to prove me wrong without being a dick about it. Bravo.
Can we say dick on these boards?
And what's dregs?
No, CYMRO, I'm thinking I'm going to use default array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) for simplicity, unless everyone would prefer to have control of their own point buy.
Never in the plato way! No! :(
dregs means i'm taking whatever class is left.
Any room still left in this? if there is room, I'll join. All the fun classes are taken, but I can have fun with whatever - if no one cares, I'd like to pick up Wizard.
Xathan, supdadupa already seemed interested. I'll give him some time, then you can come in. If you're Wizard, then the one with the gray and wrinkled face is Cleric.
Oh, and it' won't be entirely combative; I'll try to motivate you and make the enemies interesting. Just don't expect a whole lot of time to go by RPing. If everyone ends up liking their characters a lot, we can do some IRC rping.
I notice there's no non-spell casters. Is this what you want (get in more playtesting)?
Also when you say 4-5 encounters per day, that's in-game days right? cause if that's IRL days then i don't have that much free time.
If we just want spellcasters then i guess i'll make a cleric. If we want a rounded party, i'll maybe do a fighter or rogue or something (barb?)
Also what is the starting gold?
Yes, no non-spell casters. Notice, though that the primary roles (warrior, expert, divine, arcane) are filled.
Xathan, it seems like you were late for the preliminary casting. It is going to be almost another month before I have time to truely start, so maybe someone will drop out by then.
Supa: if you want to be a wizard, that means brainface is the cleric. You cool with that brainface?
I'll have the full mana system up very soon (I'm writing the class pages right now). Once it's up, I'd like everyone who wants to play to read up on the system thouroughly.
And ... um ... starting gold will be the average GP from the PHB starting gold tables.
I'll be the cleric unless brainface wants it. if he wants cleric then i'd be cool with wizard. Either way is fine.
Hm, an ambitious project, going from level 1 to 20 in a six-player-PbP. I'll be keeping my eye on this. Good luck trying to find a night that seven people will be willing and available for a PbP.
In general, good luck on this.

It's going to take a lot of work. I'm most worried about visualizing a grid for everyone; I can keep my own board, but is it better to set up a table that I update or just to tell people grid codes? (Hobgoblin 3 moves from A1 to B7 and charges)
Currently, what night is the best for everyone? I'm free every weeknight from 6 pm till 10 pm (Pacific Daylight Savings Time) except Friday night, and I'm free Saturday night from whenever till whenever.
I'm free sunday nights all summer. I'm in EST time zone, just for reference.
I'm free mostly whenever and am on Eastern time
Here is a WotC thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=230645)where people have tested online text maps for campaigns being played there. They are time consuming, but they do help keep everyone on the same page.
hmm... i may not be able to be in tahis if we're playing so often. I am going to be working full time (including frequently in the evening).
We'll see, but i gotta work out my schedule before i can givre you an answer.
QuoteI'm free every weeknight from 6 pm till 10 pm (Pacific Daylight Savings Time)
So 3pm till 7pm EST fits fine into my life just fine.
UM Cymro if you are on Eastern Standard Time then 6pm-10pm would be 9pm-1am for you

Just call me CYM-Doh!

Oops, I am backwards today.....
Well, the first hour or so of that will work for my schedule on nights I work. I usually know my schedule one week in advance, barring emergencies.
yeah, I'm, going to be trying to go to bed around 11 or so, so any time earlier would be nice...
As long as you swing by a few times a day to check if your turn is up, and to familiarize yourself with what went on, we should be fine. I'd still like one day where we'll all be on as much as possible, but no worries.
OH, and my campaign setting page is finally up. There's no info on my campaign setting just yet, but the MP system is completely posted.
Here's the Link:
Three Worlds Campaign Setting and Xeviat's OGC Works (http://www.thecbg.org/settings/29/index.html)
Checking several times a day is no problem.
Excellent. So, is everyone on board? If you are, please read up on the MP system so you'll be familiar with it when we start next month.
Quote from: Xeviat TranionExcellent. So, is everyone on board? If you are, please read up on the MP system so you'll be familiar with it when we start next month.
Do you have an idea of a start date yet?
Most likely after the 4th of July. I need time to plan ahead a few weeks, and I need to give you all time to familiarize yourself with the MP system (which shouldn't take much time if you know the XPH system), and so you can work with me on making your characters (for the most part, just make the stats with 25 point buy and average starting wealth for your class and email it to me; I'll review it and respond).
Perhaps someone who hasn't already signed up to play would be interested in working with me on making the adventure? It could be saved and utilized later as a playtest-dungeon for other rules.
July 4th or so is good.
25 pb is even better.
CYM, so you are going to read up on the system? Email me your character as soon as you know what you are going to make.

Will read through it again tonight and send you the stats on the human bard, Cul le Pettour, tonight or in the morning.
Super. Is anyone else around?
OH, and to keep this thread alive and purposeful, I'm taking suggestions on things people would like to see in the superdungeon. Even if you're not playing, please offer your ideas.
I would actually maybe be willing to switch over to helping create the dungeon.
I like doing this and also i'm not sure if my schedule will be able to fit in really frequentr playing. I don't have much time to write this, but i'll think it over some more and give a decision later on.
If i do play, i will either be a human cleric of some sun god, or a dwarven cleric of a volano god.
Sounds good Supa; if you do play, just pick two domains, I won't stress about the specific god stuff. If you want to work with me on the dungeon instead, email me at XeviatJAG@gmail.com
I don't know if you are looking for more, but here is my druid so far. If I am missing anything, just tell me.Almax Cadwyn

CYMRO: I looked over your character sheet. I like the formatting :P. Your longbow should do 1d6 not 1s6 :) and your speed would be 20ft because you are carrying a medium load. Your base saves are Fort=0, Ref=2, and Wis=2, so your saves should be Fort=+1, Ref=+3, and Wis=+2. Your ac should be 15 (+3 Studded Leather, +1 Light wooden shield, +1 Dex). I may be wrong, it has happened on rare occasions...or was that all occasions. I can never remember.
If anybody see anything wrong with my character please point it out, so that I can fix it.
Correct on all but Fort save. I took Great Fortitude as a feat, so +2 on Fort saves.
And what is wrong with 1s6 damage? :duh:
And yes, the format is great. Just cut and paste!!
You know I read that as one of your feats, but it just didn't dawn on me when I was looking at your saves. *Chalks up another mark in the wrong count*

Check out the big brain on Gaspar!
Woot, reading material. I will get back to you.
I suggest lots of NPCs (at various levels) with spellcasting abilities (but also non-spellcasters to check for balance) for the adventure. Speaking of enemy spellcasters, how does the mana point systems affect spell-like abilities?
Also, is it really so that a bard casts spells better than a wizard at level one? That can't be right!
Turin
QuoteAlso, is it really so that a bard casts spells better than a wizard at level one? That can't be right!
Because Bards are KOOL!
What do you mean about bards casting spells better than wizards at 1st level? Bards have 1 spell known, though they do have more MP.
That may actually be a little bit of a problem; perhaps bards could go back to their previous no 1st level spells at 1st level?
According to the article in "the Post", a wizard has 1 spell known, and 1 mp. A bard has 1 spell known and 2 mps. The wizard beats the bard pretty quick, but he's definitely behind at first level. :)
Just a note to everyone, I'll be making a character just as soon as the 3E profiler comes back online, which should hopefully be soon.
If that looks to be too far along, just tell me and I'll get to work on my sorceror...
Brainface, I was looking over your stats: is there a reason your attack bonuses seem to be missing the +1 attack bonus for being small? And there are some errors on your skill table; the modifiers seem right, but the math isn't.
Oh, and that happened because of the method I determined MP. I'll switch the Bard back to 1 mp, like the formula I made says (they should have 1.5 at first level, so I should have rounded down).
HA! take THAT, bard!
Quote from: NatIf that looks to be too far along, just tell me and I'll get to work on my sorceror...
I have no idea when Ish plans to redo that. You're probably better off using neptune's table, but that is a lot more typing. :/
Just use the table Crit please; does the 3eprofiler take into account variant systems?
Oh yeah... I'll just use the table then, I guess...

CYMRO, you've got tons of MP anyway. Hahaha.
You've never heardof GREED?
Yes I have. He's the devil god of the dwarves in my campaign setting.
[ic=Messenger]Kelainos was found dead in his room at the inn last night, perhaps another comrade would be more suitable for your endeavor?[/ic]
Crit, there seem to be some issues. It says you have bardic music and a longsword, but your class is a Human Sorcerer and you don't have the BAB to purchase Martial Weapon Proficiency (Longsword). IM me and we can work on your character together.
He copied CYMRO's character sheet and hasn't gotten around to editting fully. That is why he put the last line in there about being under construction. :)
Oh, I didn't notice that blurb. Hah.
So far 4 Humans and 1 Gnomette(must appease the Mods). What will number 6 be?
i hope it's a gnomette.
Well it looks like Kelainos changed to a halfling. I guess that's what he gets for drinking from bottles with tags saying drink me.
Just don't eat the little cupcakes!
I've begun work on the campaign/adventure. I'm trying to design it with as much plot as possible in such a rapidly advancing game; I don't want to bore you all to death.
Additionally, I'm trying to work out a simplistic way of using photoshop layers and saving to jpgs to be able to put up maps and battle grids. I haven't been this excited about starting a game in a long time.
I actually liked the mushrooms. :D
Sorry guys, some things have come up, and I don't think I have the time or proper motivation to see this through. I'll be backing out now, and best of luck on this endeavor...
Darn.
So who can we conscript to roond oot the party?
CYMRO, did you stop believing in the letter "U"? It's a strange, cup-like letter that falls between "T" and "V". Heh.
I think there was someone around the board who was asking about it. I'll try to find out who; maybe it was Luminous Crayon?
What is this "u" yoo talk aboot?
Send the zombie gaards forth to find this person!
Quote from: XeviatI think there was someone around the board who was asking about it. I'll try to find out who; maybe it was Luminous Crayon?
How hard is it to pick-up / drop people mid-game in a play-by-post?
It isn't all that hard. The new player either takes over the character of the player that left, or they make a new character and the DM finds a way to add them and get rid of the vacant character
As long as it doesn't happen in the middle of combat, it shouldn't be too hard. Especially since this story will be site based and not character driven; but I'd still rather keep the same classes.
If it happens in the middle of combat, then the DM usually takes control of the vacant character. Then once combat is over, or during combat you can find a new player.
Speaking of which any word on someone taking over Critical Threat's class? Who has the sixth class?
I'll bring it up in the Tavern.
Hey, I'm available if you don't mind a complete PBP newbie. I'll play whatever you need most.
If the choice is between cleric and sorceror, I'll probably go with a cleric. Any particular world this is in, or does it matter?
Welcome aboard, I am a PbP newbie, too!
Nope, world doesn't really mater. Just pick two domains you like; you'll probably end up being a "middle of the line" cleric, since the cleric, druid, and paladin are probably going to be the best meleers. Up to you though, and just play what you like; it shouldn't be hard to find someone to play a Sorc.
Alright, the first several encounters have been written and the general story arc has been decided upon, so I'm ready to go as soon as we get two more players.
Here's the introduction to get you thinking:
[ooc=Introduction]You have been residents of Green Vale, a sleepy village within a valley surrounding the Green River, for your whole lives. The village is located here because it is just the right distance from the capitol to make it a superb spot for traders who are taking the river inland to stop and re-supply. The only thing of any interest in the locale is a relatively peaceful tribe of kobolds who mine the hills (with which Green Vale sometimes participates in trade with), and the unexplored mountains beyond.
About a year ago, contact with the local kobolds ceased; the town council assumed it to be the work of adventurers or a gnome raid. Not much thought went into it, though, because the village could get along perfectly well without them. More recently, over the last month, persons have gone missing seemingly at random; some farmers here, a blacksmith there. It wasn't until Merik Sol (the head priest of the chapel of the sun) and Erich (the leader of a small druid grove) went missing that people began to take notice. Several townsfolk formed a party, investigating the incident before leaving to find the missing persons; that was one week ago.
This morning, one of the investigators (Steven, a reformed pick pocket who was a close friend of the clerc who had formed the investigation party) returned, frantic and bloodied. By his account, the party tracked the missing persons to a kobold mine, where the party was ambushed and captured. Steven alluded capture and ran the entire twelve mile trip home. The town council has convened, and has placed a bounty: 2,500 pieces of gold to the brave men or women who stop what ever the kobolds are up to, double if they bring the missing priests and other townsfolk home safe.[/ooc]
Wait, it looks like Luminous is in, so we only need one more player.
I'll get a character sheet to you soon, but add me to the roster as Claugh Forgeheart, male dwarven cleric.

His determination is of greater renown than any reputation of pleasantry. His face and head are shaved clean, though black stubble covers his brick of a jaw. He carries a large hammer, whose more obscure symbolism relates to the necessary suffering described in his system of belief, and whose more accessable symbolism relates to shattered bones and contusions.
As a disciple of the Anvil, Claugh is driven to seek self-perfection through toil and pain. Metal on the anvil suffers much beneath the strikes of the hammer and the heat of the forge, but with every blow, it comes closer to perfection. The Anvil is the whole of creation; the hammer of travail can strike at any time. The blows of suffering strengthen all creatures that refuse to break.[/spoiler]

Luminous the starting gold is the average for your class
I love the names.
Updated with equipment and a better description. I think I'm set to go, but feel free to check my work.
Xeviat, did you ever change the bard's MP?
I haven't changed it on the pages; I'll do that right now.
I do have an idea for a modification on this MP system to possibly correct any issus of too few MP at low levels, but too much propencity to nova at high levels:
First, cut all caster's MP in half (round up). Then, characters are fatigued when their MP is reduced to half of their new total (possibly half their base MP, bonus MP not counted); fatigue is changed to -2 to all scores and can't charge or run (so it penalizes casters). When MP is reduced to 1/4th, you're exhausted (-6 to all scores, limited to a single standard or move; again, my modification).
Then, characters would have a much faster MP regeneration rate; possibly 1 point per hour per level of rest, and maybe increased by feats or something. This way, a caster is encouraged to remain above 1/4th the normal total, and since a caster is suposed to deal with 4 encounters a day, it adds up.
I'm just really worried about wizards having 2 mp, counting their bonus mp. Granted, this is what they have in the core game, but I hate playing 1st level wizards anyway.
QuoteI do have an idea for a modification on this MP system to possibly correct any issus of too few MP at low levels, but too much propencity to nova at high levels:
got[/i] to be simpler, and it's about what the core casting classes do anyway. (The sorcerer, by formula, shouldn't learn 1st level spells till 2nd level, the bard's spellcasting is accelerated in early levels, etc.)
Brainy, the reason for my earlier suggestion is that it would effectively limit a caster to 1/4th their total output in a single combat; it would be a flavorful and mechanically simple way of restricting their per combat output without changing too much.
