Title: Baldur's Gate, Mods and Patches
Post by: EvilElitest on March 15, 2009, 02:28:18 PM
My computer broke and i've been forced to reinstall all of the games I had with no memory, and i figured this would be a fun excuse to replay the baldur's gate trilogy.  I never used any mods before this, so i figured now might be a nice time to start.  Problem is, I want to make sure i can get the mods i want in the right order without screwing everything, and a lot of the mods i've found lack any real description.  Any recommendations?

The primary mod you should concern yourself with is definitely the DungeonBeGone mod for BG2, which allows you to skip Irenicus' starting dungeon entirely (and still get all of the important stuff). It's a convenient way of getting on to doing things without spending a ridiculous amount of time in that place every time you start a new game. That's really the only mod I can remember trying for it, and can't remember hearing about many others besides all of the romance mods, some of which are reported to be really good.

Are there actually mods that have new stories, or are they just "New Weapons," "Fix Glitches," "Skip Dungeons" mods?  Because I would play some new stories if that's the case.

There are a few which have new characters with storylines.

I have this site in my bookmarks:
http://www.gibberlings3.net/

I think they have some good mods for the games.

Ah, good old Baulder's Gate.

...since when is it a Trilogy?

Many people consider BG2 and ToB to be two separate chapters, thus making it a trilogy:
* BG1+LotSC
* BG2
* ToB

I heard that there was one for bg2 that let you be a goblin, and a seperate one that changed the way weapons looked.

If you haven't played Torment, play it--I can't remember if i've made you play it yet or not. Same engine, more awesome story. (YMMV, in which case your miles are WRONG, WRONG, wrong.)

There are plenty of mods that offer new, fully voiced NPC's, new stories, etc.

Some mods alter game rules a bit.

I highly recommend "Unfinished Business" which is a mod that ties up a lot of the loose ends in some quests and other things that were coded into the game but never included.  Including Minsc's quest to find *shock* his lost Boo.

As for game mods, "Ease of Use" mod is a must.  It does a whole slew of things that you can turn individually on to suit your preference.  My personal favorite was removing the limit on item stacking, as well as removing the race requirement for romances.

I think that is included in the "baldurdash" fixpack, which (you guessed it) fixes a number of bugs and other things.

Finally, there is also "BG Tutu", which converts BG1 to use the BG2 engine, so you can play through the first game with all classes, kits, spells, etc, as well as being able to play on a higher resolution.

My only problem with the mods is that i don't know what order to do them in, as they seem to counteract each other, or require a certain order of installation.  So that is my main concern

Actually my main concern is that the second game isn't working, i keep getting this message

"Error installing iKernel.exe: (0x10000), and i have no idea how to fix that, dispite looking on the internet.  If anybody could give me a hand, that would be great.

thanks a lot
