Title: Voice Your Opinion
Post by: Matt Larkin (author) on March 15, 2009, 02:41:16 PM
The CBG Wiki is now open for rating books, movies, comics, TV shows, and anything else you can think of: Wiki (http://www.thecbg.org/wiki/index.php?title=Fantasy_Series).

This is replaces the old rankings threads (at least the ones I maintained). I updated fantasy books with ratings with those. You can also include an opinion, or link back to the forum. This allows everyone to express their opinion on quality, without leaving one person to always update a thread ranking. I have made a few threads official discussion threads.

I heartily encourage others to go and rate stuff! Especially comics and graphic novels, since there are no votes ('cause I don't know much about 'em).

[ic=Steps for Voicing an Opinion]
1. Sign up for the wiki if you don't have an account. We encourage using the same user name so we know to value your opinion ;)

2. Navigate the top menu to page for things you want to vote on, the click the "edit" on the very top menu.

3. Type {{UScore|user name|#}} where the user name is your wiki account name, the # is a rating 1-5 (see the top bar for what each means). Make sure you place this above the {{CBGTotal|Series name}} line which totals the scores. A few entries (mainly in Fantasy Series) are still using the system, so just put your vote in, and I or someone else can fix the system later.

4. If you want to add a comment, place "|your comment" after the number, before the closing }}.

5. At the bottom of the screen select the "minor edit" checkbox and save your changes.[/ic]
[ic=Adding new entries]
To add a new entry to a category, just copy the formatting you see elsewhere. Namely, this is the formatting for voting on the new Batman film series:

{{ResH2|Batman Begins/The Dark Knight}}
{{UScore|Phoenix|5}}
{{CBGTotal|New Batman Series}}

In the first line, replace "Batman Begins/DK" with the name of the entry.
In the next line, replace my name and vote with your own.
In the last line, replace "New Batman Series" with the name of the entry (probably the same as line 1).[/ic]

Do we rate just by editing the page?

And do the votes add automatically to the stars, or do we have to recalculate.

Also... Where is Robert Asprin and the MYTH INC. series, one of the most famous humorous fantasy series of all time!

Two things worth talking about:

I personally think all updates to this section should be made as "minor updates," (which I apologize for, I didn't do the first few times I did it).  I would like "Major updates" to be reserved for content updates to campaign setting information.

Secondly, for the comics rating section, that can be tricky.  I don't think you can just accurately rank a specific comic series, say, "The Amazing Spiderman," because hundreds of authors have written thousands of stories over dozens of years, and the quality is from utter crap to great.  I think for ranking comics, you should rank specific stories/arcs.  Such as "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" (which was a standalone series like the Watchmen), "Spiderman: Maximum Carnage" (which was a crossover of different books in the Spiderman saga), etc.

Just some thoughts.

Howabout a video games section too?  It could be divided by genre or platform, or both.

But my first statement above, I think is pretty important.

Probably a good point about minor edits. Especially if you are section editing lot's of places.

Also, rounding down or up for the totals?  My vote is for rounding down.

As I mention in the header, it's rounded as appropriate (up if it's .5 or higher). This is because  rounding down would mean a movie with 99 votes of 4 stars and one vote of three-stars would get 3 stars. It assigns a disproportionate weight to naysayers.

That's my opinion, anyway.

Edit: I also added more movies (including horror category), a few more books, and some tv shows.

Good point, Phoenix, scientific approach is usually the most sensible.

Seems that some Sci-fi works have found their way into the fantasy section. Might just be me though as i can only judge by the title as i've only read a fraction.
By the way, i added a work to the sci-fi since it features a post-apocalyptic Earth setting for a part of the story, but it doesn't really have other sci-fi elements. Is sci-fi "reserved" for more classic works of sci-fi?

When adding your vote, it would be much better if you don't just stick it at the end- perhaps try to put all the votes sequentially

5
5
5
4
4
3
3

instead of

5
3
5
2

It's very difficult to estimate the average numbers when people just add their vote to the bottom of a list.

Whoops.  I didn't catch this part.  Sorry.  With my shiny new account I just ran off.  Any more of ratings will be minor edits.

@CC: Genre classifications within speculative fiction are pretty fluid. Some people claim Star Wars is sci-fi because it has aliens, spaceships, and lasers, some claim fantasy b/c it has magic powers and good vs. evil as a central conflict. If you think a particular series should be moved, mention it here or on the discussion page; if no one objects, it's not hard for you to move it, either.

You can add a series wherever you think it fits best. Anything in the future generally gets called sci-fi, unless it's clearly fantasy instead (such as Shanara).

@Light Dragon: I originally listed alphabetically by handle so that if you wondered, for example, "hey I know I like the same kinds of stuff as Luminous Crayon, what did he think about X" you could find it easier. I can see the sense in your way, too. Though I won't personally go back and change the order on every vote already up there. Individuals can organize as they make specific edits, should they feel inclined.

@SH/Ishy: Adding ratings should definitely be minor edits. Adding to talk pages, I think, should not. Otherwise the person your talking to may not ever know (email notification doesn't trigger on minor edits, and most of us use the hide minor edits feature 'cause we don't want to check a page every time someone fixes a comma). Same may hold if you make a whole new category or add an extremely large number of items for people to vote on. What do you think?

So a post-apocalyptic future caused by war that caused reality to respond to people's thoughts and nightmares, and which also features ninjas, supercorporations, pirates and mimes go where? :P

I recommend here (http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?3143.last). But really, wherever you want.

I've whipped up some templates so you don't have to manually recalculate any more. Only superhero movies are done for the time being, but it'll ends looking something like:

{{ResH2|Name of movie or book or whatever}}
{{UScore|person|score|value}}
{{UScore|Ishmayl|3|blah blah}}
{{UScore|sparkletwist|3}}
{{CBGTotal|Name of movie or book or whatever}}

So, to add your score, just make a UScore template with your name, your score, and optionally, comments. Make sure the CBGTotal template is last, and it will automatically compute the average. The redundantly stating the name in the CBGTotal is required to get around a caching issue in MediaWiki where it won't recalculate templates that don't take and use a unique parameter each time.

You rule Sparkle! I've starting looking at the code you used, but it's, uh, above my pay grade.

Is now a bad time to point out that picking your nose is above your pay grade? :P

I sort of understand what most of it is doing. A question I posted there, but I'll but here, too. Can the rounding system be changed to scientific, instead of down (for the reasons I mentioned earlier in the thread)?

No excuses left, now voting is easier than ever!

I updated the first post with easy instructions.

I also added a Period Pieces section to movies with no fantasy or sci-fi elements.

Moved classic (pre-1900) fiction to its own page (http://www.thecbg.org/wiki/index.php?title=Classics).
