This is the discussion thread for the Midsummer Contest (http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?68330). Enjoy!
I don't see powers mentioned anywhere in the description. Is the idea that this should be a weapon that is just arbitrarily magical (like excalibur) or should we be imaginative and give it some sort of power?
Also, historical event/user: should that event/person be native to a setting, or should we just come up with something new.
Can we have a word-limit? It would be a good way to level the playing field. May I suggest 650 words?
Disclaimer: I may or may not enter... so words are just meant to be taken as a suggestion.
Looks interesting. I look forward to reading the winner's entry!

Does it have to a weapon?
and
What types of weapons are not allowed?
Can i make a "Ak-47 of Communist Pride (+1)" (j/k)
Seriously though i have been toying with the idea of a unique Bombard (Turkish Artillery).

As it is supposed to be setting-less,I did not specify a time period, anything that is a weapon is fine. Preferably, it should, of course, not be a one-time use weapon, as they tend to have a short history. But if you justify it nicely, I suppose you could make some kind of sanctified fragmentation device hailing from the south and center of Turkey. If you really wanted.
So, when it comes to powers, I get the impression that it should have some sort of power, but that this power should not be stated in terms of +1 or effect of spell x, as these would be system specific.
I also have a question: While these cannot be system specific, can the fluff for them be setting specific? For example, since Avayevnon is my primary campaign setting, could the history/user for a weapon I were to create belong to that setting?
EDIT: Oops. I was called away in the middle of writing, and it appears my question was answered before I actually posted it. (also, apparently I missed that it had already been asked in the first place)
Because further clarification is always good...

They can be setting-specific if you want, but they need not be.
Midsummer Contest got me thinking about Shakespeare... http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?68330.0#post_68347 "The Pinprick of Fate"... a Pin... Barely a weapon, but worth the risk. :)
I am done, but in the interest of giving everyone a chance to contribute, have you considered lengthening the contest until Friday. (4 days is a short time.)

Oh, July 15- that's more than enough time.
LD is /* Embarassed.

...And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this Thy hand grenade that with it Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits, in Thy mercy." And the Lord did grin and the people did feast upon the lambs, and sloths, and carp, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats, and large Chihuahuas, and monkeys, and iguanas, and mudskippers, and pufferfish, and swallows, and porcupines, and moose. And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it." Amen.

My thoughts exactly.

Just wanted to say, looking good so far. Keep 'em coming.
Love the writing, Kindling. And the Shakespeare/Alladin world sounds really interesting, Light Dragon, almost like something from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen...
Thank you Steerpike, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks :)
Praise from you is praise indeed. Will you be entering the contest yourself?
I added my own entry. Strikes me as something in the realm between classical myths and DnD.
"as his belief that his most trusted friends were evil spiders in disguise led him to become potentially dangerous."
I would figure that would put a crimp in any relationship.

I enjoyed the entry!

Glad to hear it :)
Bump.
If we have a new contest up then who won this one?
No one yet, there is going to be a bit of overlap on the two contests.
A reminder:
You have until 15 July (that's this Wednesday) to submit any entries before the contest closes.
Note that the July contest will still run through the end of the month, so if you feel rushed on this one, you can always enter the other one.
Good luck to all current and prospective entrants.
You have just under 24 hours remaining.
Vote in the Poll Section for the winner! Yo!
