Alright people, I just got done crafting myself a shirt of maille for my Link costume. It's lightweight alluminum with thick brass trim (because it's suposed to be entirely brass, but I didn't have the money nor inkling to wear 30 pounds of brass). After weaving all of this maille, I decided I wanted to do more.

So, I think I've stumbled upon a hobby that I could make some money out of. I'd like to know how many of you would be interested in purchasing a stainless steel dicebag? I'm thinking I can charge 25 bucks for them (american) since they're going to take around 3 hours of work each, but I can contribute 5 bucks of each purchase to the CBG (to do with what ever the CBG may need money for).

Additionally, I could make premium bags from copper, brass, or bronze (and may be able to pair them with a copper, brass, or bronze dragon drawing supplied by an artist friend of mine). These may be 35 bucks, because of the increased material cost.

I did some searching, and I haven't found another site that sells metal dicebags; but I did find leather and they charge 33 for them (including a set of dice). If 25 is too much, I might be able to go down to 20.

Well, how many of you would be willing to buy one? I'll start making them in July and will sell them through ebay's "purchase now" program (or I might go through amazon or google, which ever ends up being the most economical on me). I'd also like as much advertisement as possible from you, my loyal minions ... I mean friends.

Well, it really depends on how bad it'd scratch up my dice and how well it works as a bag.  Not to diss your craftsmanship or anything, but if I get an ineffective formless blob of chain mail for my money, I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay money which ?I could spend on a Fiendish Codex for it.

In relation to the oiginal question though, and assuming it the bag could survive my wear and tear, I might buy one eventually, but only for $20 and only because I know I'd be helping the CBG.

No offense intended, but I've already got a leather dice bag, plus a tupperware, and they both work fine.

Heh; I don't think your dice would get messed up; it would be about as bad as rolling them in a ceramic bowl I think. And the bag would survive most anything, as long as you don't store it in a tub of salt water (and even then, stainless steel can take a lot).

And no offense; it's more of a novelty really.

I would never pay more than $19.95.

See, 20 was my original estimate just on materials and labor; the extra 5 was to help the boards.

Make them available through Google and I am on board!

is it a 4-in-1 or 6-in-one weave? does it have designs in it or is it plain? is it lined? do board members get a discount? if so, how much? how does it close? how big is it?
just some questions you probably should consider.

i think the idea of having a product to support the boards is great, and homemade maille dice bags are a wonderful idea for this.
that said, i already have a dice bag that works well, and i honestly dont see myself buying a maille dice bag any time in the near future.

by the way, given the estimates provided, $25 +s/h sounds like a decent price. just make sure to adjust the price after you find out the actual cost of the materials, and adjust the price accordingly.

What's 4-in-1 ...

Just kidding. I'm planning on them being 4-in-1 across the majority of it, but 6-in-1 on the base and rim for structural stability. It will close by a drawstring and bead-ties on the top, and the top's 6-in-1 structure will make it a little tighter anyway. I didn't plan on it being lined, but that may be a good idea. It will be somewhere between the size of a baseball and the size of a softball.

Board members get to reap the rewards of contributing to the guild (I will suggest to Ish possibly using the money to make Tshirts or something).

I know the cost of the materials, and the amount of time each bag will take based on my average weaving time when making my shirt. Let's just say I'd be charging less than minimum wage for the workmanship.

I had a friend here in the 'boro who made these bags, as well as made mailes for people.  He used different grades of steel (I believe) to charge different prices. Those types of metal you listed would be cool, but what about the sturdier metals, just for curiosity's sake?

Also, sdragon mentioned how it closes.  I don't know much about the process, but I would recommend braided leather cords, cuz that would rawk! :)

And the donations to make shirts would be an excellent idea, I think.

While I think $25 is a fair price (I voted "No"), I wouldn't buy one myself, what with the shipping cost and all.

Ish, you should set up a cafepress.com storefront, and sell CBG t-shirts and junk through them.
Zero initial investment, and proceeds could go to whatever site upgrades/bells & whistles/tequila binges you need.

We could all wear the t-shirts to conventions, so we could recognize eachother...  That would be so cool!

Braided leather cords would be cool.

But what metal is strudier than stainless steel and actually has a look that will matter? Titanium would be a waist of money, and magnesium would be dangerous. I chose stainless because it doesn't corrode, it's strong and hard, and it's very shinny.

I could design a "CBG" logo in brass on the stainless ones for guildies.

mmmm... tequila binges...

One wonders what a CBG shirt would say/have on it.

Xeviat, when I mentioned the different steels, I just meant that the person I knew used different grades of steel for different pricing options; 18/10, etc, etc (I don't know enough about steel to go on from there).

Well now, a dice bag with the logo I might buy...

And a CBG t-shirt could say anything cool, like maybe...

"Building your own world has never been this much fun!"  or "My world is better than yours!"

Actually, I like that last one...

We seem to have derailed.... Xeviat, I think your dice bag idea is swell, and I look forward to seeing it implemented.... feel free to PM if you'd like to discuss more details of it.

Ish, if we can set some things up with your webspace, we could even sell them straight through here. Then we can make shirts (I have an artist who could design them for a small fee; we'll have money for such endevors).

I'll PM you when I make the initial investment to buy the rings. Oh, and the different "grades" you're thinking of are probably different gauges (thicknesses); I could do thinner wire to make it cheeper, but it would be easier on me to just use a standard thickness (which is armor grade actually).

PS: It may also work as a gauntlet for bashing people if your hand is small.

It's a cool offer, but I just don't have the cash to shell out on things like this.

Ooh, now it just gets better and better.  A dice bag and a weapon for one small price of $19.95 plus S&H!
