Title: Major Fail.
Post by: Towel Ninja on October 20, 2009, 08:23:07 PM
So over the weekend my computer felt the need to fail me again..

Im staring at a 17" monitor in the lowest resolution it can go... Why you may ask?

Well my video card is dying on my laptop and my computer has an issue with os's. Im running linux because windows cant install and the best thing is i had to reformat and lose all my un backed up info again lol. Maybe i should back up my stuff more often? So anyone else have this happen as often as it happens to me?? If so how do you handle it?

You might need a new hard drive.
Possibly a new motherboard, but I doubt it.

Im pretty sure my Motherboard could need replacement, my brother likes to leave my laptop running sitting on a leather couch... Nothing like picking up a laptop hot enough to burn you. but i think my harddrive is fine

Sounds like it could be your hard drive  malfunctioning due to the stresses involved with the heat.

EDIT: I had similar problems with a desktop that didn't have adequate ventilation and was kept running 24/7. I changed the hard drive and drilled holes in the desk for better ventilation and bam, no problems since.

Hm, if i could find an easy way to check if it was my hard drive it would be awesome. But most of the errors i get point at video card. Stupid laptops. D:

Is your Graphics card integrated or separate? I have 2 laptops and 1 has an integrated Graphics Card and the other is like a PC (i.e. it's an actual graphics card).

Heat issues, most likely. If the drive fails (even partially) it'll mess with drivers and such, which could give you the graphics card errors.

But if it's actually the motherboard, best advice is simply to buy a new computer. It'll be easier and cheaper.

Its not integrated, its an nvidia card. Yeah its looking like thats what im going to do. Looking at one of those fancy tablet laptops. It would be ideal for my d&d stuff. Anyone else have a tablet? if so has it helped at all with Roleplaying/Wordbuilding?

My friends draws his webcomic with a tablet. He's usually a player, so he leaves it at home... I sort of wish I had one now, jeez that'd be a great help for DMing (especially when trying to describe structures and the interiors of rooms).

Me and my housemates have an imaginary character named Major Fail. He is a supervillain who's power is to cause mid- to high-grade failure in any enterprise he is involed or takes and interest in.
