Title: Team Fortress 2
Post by: Velox on November 08, 2009, 12:49:53 AM
Hello People!

I just bought the Orange Box (2 years after it came out... that's just how I roll). I keep trying to get a good game of Team Fortress 2 going, but it's impossible to do with strangers. They're usually playing weird modded games that don't look like much fun anyway.

So... does anybody here play? I used to be a damn fine FPS player back in the day, and I won't let you down!

I have considered getting the orange box for awhile, now that I have Steam I probably should but I already promised myself no more non-essentials till after Christmas so I don't accidentally buy something someone was going to get me as a gift.

I will uber you. And by uber I mean kritzkreig.

I'm not sure why you're having trouble with playing with strangers? I mean, there's a lot of 24/7 fast spawn 2-fort, which isn't necessarily that fun, once you get tired of it, but you should be able to find a fairly vanilla game?

You might want to generally avoid servers that are playing orange maps, purple maps, cyberpunk, or have the "RTD" mod--those can be fun, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend them for starting out. (They're not harder, but they're more likely to have people just messing around, mods that spawn 5 sentries, heavies floating around with broken animation, whatever.)

Push maps are generally a solid bet for avoiding crazy mods, if that helps?

Plus, Push maps are the best. :)

Also plus, I've personally always found Team Fortress 2, despite the name, to not be very much of a "teamplay" game.  Don't get me wrong, you can use strategerize (yup) with friends and such, and play good games that way, but you can also play pretty well with random strangers.

Also extra plus, keep in mind that I'm actually not the biggest fan of the game (though have had some enjoyable experiences with it), and mayhaps don't know all the nuances that brainface would know of, and haven't played as much as he.

Super also extra plus, my account id is:

Clever, no?

I assume that you're looking to play TF2 on the PC? I haven't tried the game out at all yet but I have the Orange Box for my 360 and I'm told that it doesn't go cross-platform.

In the Orange Box, Portal is where it is at. Then again, from Valve, Portal is where it is at. Of course, the same thing can be said about just video games in general.

I play TF2 sometimes, too. Playing with random idiots... oops, I mean random strangers, is ok if you want a quick game and don't care much about strategy, but forget about any sort of cohesive team offensive. It's mostly just pushing at the goal and running around shooting people. A lot of people online are immature assholes anyway, so it gets old.

Anyway, Portal is where it's at on the 360, I am quite sure. The 360 version of TF2 is but a poor shadow of the PC version. It hasn't received any of the significant upgrades-- what is TF2 without the sandvich?

Embarrassing.  Like a fridge full of condiments and no food.
