Title: On the Origin of Species [February Discussion]
Post by: limetom on February 01, 2010, 08:43:59 AM
This is discussion thread for the February Contest (http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?77371).

The consensus is still out on whether it is a subspecies or a closely related species in the same genus than the contest thread.  :3

I can't take the Bollag seriously. My mind just keeps twisting the name into bollock, which made me envision the things as six-legged nutsacks. :D

Ooops.  Although, strictly speaking, add a mouth and a stomach, and a lot of hair, and that's more or less what you've got . . .

Interesting contest. I've been thinking about this kind of stuff, so it's about time I put something together.

Salacious entered a very strong contender. It'd be quite an achievement to top that one.

Now I'm just wishing our forum contests were more often. They always get the old ball rolling.

leetz has an interesting creature but I don't think it fits under the category of prey animal

Yeah, it probably isn't. But it would only take a simple reversal to make it fit. What if it was just as massive but benign, its motives still inexplicable, and strange little Kyphos-polyps fell from its body when ever it passed. These little bastards might be Kyphlings, incapable of maturation due to the unfriendly climates they find themselves in (if Kyphos is from \ another age, the strange climate of the present world may be inimical to its development) so they wander around in a harmless neotenal state until humans come along and cook them up. More enterprising hunters might actually chase the parent, leaping on a massive tentacle as it crests the waters and prying unhatched Kyphlings from fissures in its flesh. These could sell for millions.

Cataclysmic Crow, Lumberback is the best name for an animal ever. It sounds like a pokemon.

Added the Glick. Reworded the entry slightly from the entry that is currently present in Gloria (see signature).

Crow's lumberbacks seem interesting. I enjoy how they blended into the background, I also enjoy how they blossom.

Steerpike's sand rays are very disturbing. I think that is what he was going for... ... I think the gorefly symbiotes take CE to a new level of fright, however.

Thanks to LD and SA!
I tried to stay pretty true to the whole prey thing, with them only surviving in a hostile environment by way of remaining unseen. Also why I didn't want to make them too large. Essentially, they are an evolution (in the non-pokemon way :p) of stick bugs and such :)
Limetom, I was thinking, wouldn't a contest to create a magical discipline/tradition be fairly interesting for the next one?

How about a mystic one instead of a magical one. I agree this idea is awesome, but magical would leave out those of us who don't have magic in our settings. Mystic at least makes it ok for us to incorporate martial disciplines (monks, martial fighters, etc).

Yeah, probably better so it is more ambigious whether the magic works or not. Although systems of magic should qualify as well.
