Title: New World(s)
Post by: Numinous on June 27, 2006, 02:35:44 PM
Due to an extreme case of writer's block, I have decided to embark on the construction of a new setting.  Godswalk has temporarily stagnated, and hopefully this breath of fresh air will allow me to return with vigor to my favored project.

My goal here is to build a series of simple worlds, an exercise and so much more.  Each of these worlds will focus upon a central terrain type, and the variations it can contain.  A world of forests, a world of oceans, a world of mountains, and a land of sands and heat.

While each is often seen as "narrow", I plan to diversify and elaborate on those worlds which are fairly unified in climate and geography.  To explore the possibilities present in these environments is my goal.  I'm not sure yet how I will connect each of the worlds, but I feel they should have some type of relation to eachother.

This thread is here for me to work out rough ideas, concepts, and prepare a presentation of finalized work for a separate thread in the HomeBrews forum.  I think it's important to understand that this isn't meant to be perfect, it's meant to be fun.  Any help will be appreciated, and comments are welcome.

I'll be happy to help out in any way I can, as usual. I'll be working on Verdant Apocalypse, so feel free to steal any of the stuff for that for the forest world: I should have a few new races up tomorrow, designed for forest worlds.
A world of massive rainforests, rivers choked with greenery, and alpine hills.  Varying environments exist, whether living in different cimates, the upper canopy, the twisting mess of branches in between, or the ever-gloomy forest floor.  I like a varying pantheon,m s perhaps a god of beasts, darkness, water, fire, light, strength, beauty...  Other thoughts coming soon.

A seafaring orcish culture, barabarians and raiders.  advanced cultures below the sea, and pirate adventures above.  Trade and communication will be important factors.  Gods of wrath, weather, war, safety, and perhaps some more familiar gods for the races below the surface...
As for relating them to each other: they could take the place of the elemental planes in a variant cosmology: rather than having a plane of fire, air, earth and water, you could have a plane of forests, a plane of oceans, a plane of mountains and a plane of deserts. If you design them in a modular fashion, they could replace the elemental planes in any cosmology. I for one would be interested in having these "mild versions" of the elements as inner planes for any setting I play in that uses planes; I've always found the elemental planes too harsh and unrealistic.
