Title: The First Age discussion thread
Post by: Numinous on July 17, 2006, 03:58:01 PM
Any comments, queries, or hate-mail can be posted here.  In case you missed it, the thread containing the setting can be found here. (http://www.thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?9334)  Feedback is a necessary part of my creative process, so anything you have is welcome.  I'd also like to note that requests for things you'd like to see are appreciated, and will probably be followed up on with new material.  So plase folks, comment!

Hm. I think that the tone of your description is a little bleak. Imagine Call of Cthulhu that actually just bluntly tells you the truth about the awful things your characters will face from the start. I found that some players just simply won't play Call of Cthulhu because they sense that their characters will be TOO insignificant. However, Call of Cthulhu is a really good fun game setting and all it takes is a sadistic gm to turn such players off. You might, as I suggest, just want to alter the tone a bit to make it sound less oppressive and more exciting.

Well, the core ethos is a work in progress.  I just needed to get it up so I can continue posting the other stuff.  Which, may I point out, has been posted.

QuoteEgridar is a young world, created by the gods to be thir paradise, and home from which they will watch over the multiverse. Unfortunately, their conflicts have brought strife to their home, and terror is the law of the land. Primitive people struggle to survive in a realm where dragons fill the sky, lycanthropes haunt the great forests, and Doppelgangers infiltrate and destroy society before it can start. The first age of the Godswalk setting is low technology, low magic, and low powered. The greatest victory that can be found in this cruel world is survival, and the luxury of seeing the sun rise the next day.

These are your words, obviously. The last couple of sentences make things seem very grim indeed, is the main point I'm making.

Having said that, within your other descriptions lie other possibilities. Clearly all the different tribes have interesting advantages, and obviously they have done better than they did at the start or they would not have survived at all. I think it is interesting to have a world in which humanity is not top dog, and has to compete rather more fiercely than in others. Is that the main idea behind this world?

This world, as mentioned by it's name, is the first Age of a larger project.  By following the timeline of this world, I chose 3 distinct points to flesh out and make into complete settings.  This setting, the first age, is indeed designed to be a world where humanity, and indeed, humanoids in general are not even truly able to compete against the other creatures.  One of several campaigngoals I've had worked out is too prove that you are strong by defeating something, like a lycanthrope or dragon, and thereby securing humanity's place in the world.  Did I answer the question, or get lost entirely?

My mom forgot to scan it yesterday, she said she'd try today.  I don't promise it will look good, but it helps to lay out where things are in relation to eachother.

At this point I'd be happy with a scribble on a napkin. ^_^
