Any of you guys into comics? I collect The Punisher, B.P.R.D., Hellboy, Desolation Jones, The Goon, Deadpool, 303, Nextwave... I have a few others floating around... some old Star Wars, Infantry, Iron Ghost, Billy the Kid (by Kyle Hotz and Eric Powell), The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Army of Darkness, Robocop, Perhapanauts, The Books of Doom (Dr. Doom's autobiography), and some Jhonen Vasquez stuff (ZIM!!!).
Eric Powell, Garth Ennis, Warren Ellis, and Mike Mignola are my favorite artists/writers.
What about you guys?
I used to be really into comics, especially the X-men, but I really couldn't afford to keep up the habit...and then they killed Pheonix again, and I decided that was enough. :P
Good to see you around. The Books of Doom sounds really cool, I might have to look into that.
The closest I've got to Xmen is a Wolverine/Punisher crossover... and it rocks. They kill midgets! Yes, that Pheonix plotline is completely ridiculous. They should have stuck to mutation as the catalyst for story... not any of this cosmic crap.
The books of Doom are fairly awesome. Von Doom is quite the badass.
Yeah, I agree. X-Men is best when it sticks down to Earth.
Von Doom is one of the best villians ever. I love Von Doom.
He's got real character and he's an old school megalomaniac. Also, he combines black magic with super-advanced technology! Eastern European accent! His own country! He's clearly the man.
I see you changed your name. No longer the fallen? Well, I'm sure it's all for the best. At least you've gone up in rank! But you might want some ointment for that red hand thing...
*Ahem* ElDo here. We've got a good number of comic fans 'round these parts, as evidenced by the old comic thread (http://thecbg.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?7228.0).
I just bought Ion #3 today. Looks hot. I like Kyle Rayner as finally moving on up in the DCU.
A lot of my other preferences can be found on the old thread, but as a point-- I said it in the Tavern, but I'm thinking about beginning work on a superheroic setting in the near future (when I get my Mutants & Masterminds books I ordered today). Anyone with any experience in that area is welcome to leave advice.

The NEXT Captain Marvel
Superhero games are sooooo much fun. It's really a great idea. I mean, hell, characters usually turn out to be superheroic anyway. In a recent shadowrun adventure my little "wired-to-the-gills" or "crammed-with-mana" characters killed over twenty well-armed soldiers in less than six seconds and killed about fifty people in total that day. Including a $2,000,000 Cyber-Tank-Man. So the super hero GAME is great because it feels right for the players to be kicking mighty hoop.
As far as Marvel and DC comics go... Meh. I'll say that I don't like almost all old superheros and leave it at that. I much prefer modern tales and characters and art. I think the costumes have much to do with it. I prefer long coats and kevlar to spandex and super-science.

Yeah, that's what's best about Von Doom. he's old school bad guy. None of this "blah blah blah, I'm misunderstood" bull, he's streight up "I'm going to rule the world."
I change my name about weekly now, whenever it strikes my fancy. :P

And Ion 4 comes out today.
Green Lantern Corps is off to a slow start.
And I am loving the new Checkmate.
If it is not clear, I am a DC snob. :D
Currently reading Astonishing X-Men, Civil War (which is turning out to be rather good), Batman, the various RA Salvatore comics about Drizzt (they're converting all the books to comics, and they're rather well-done), Detective Comics, 52 (which is kinda boring so far), and some others I can't remember. I also can't afford to keep reading comics, and have recently just cancelled a few of my subscriptions, and when the arcs I'm currently reading finish, I'll probably cancel them as well... :(
I probobly spend $10-$20 just about every week at the comic book store. Lately, the ones I read have been slow coming out... so there hasnt been much to buy. Occasional booster pack of magic cards... and the comic book store near my house has been selling old Shadowrun Second Edition adventuers for $3! It's great; they cost less than the comics and are entertaining to read.
Oh... anybody read the "Doc Frankenstein" comic by Burlyman, the Wachowski bro's company? It's fraggin awesome.
i read stuff from all over the place (some web, some Image, some Darkhorse, some DC, some Marvel, , some Wildstorm, some indy) but most of my favourite stuff is on the Vretigo imprint. Sandman, 100 Bullets, Fables, Lucifer, and the Invisibles are incredible.
My question to anyone reading both Civil War (and the various comics surrounding it), as well as Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men:
How do the timelines fit together? Joss has said in an interview before that he is definitely taking Civil War into account with his story, but it's very obvious that his story is either taking place well before, or well after Civil War. For instance, Emma Frost may as well be 2 completely different people in those 2 separate stories; plus, Wolverine is very obviously not on the hunt during Astonishing (as he is during Civil War). Any thoughts, comments, knowledge?
speaking of wolvie, nobody ever answered my question from the last thread- is it true hes carrying a sword around, now? and if so.... why?
my favorite recent read was johnny raygun :D its a great indy comic that published somewhat locally, and ive actually met the guys who make it on a couple of occassions. i think its carried by previews, so if you ever get the chance...
In the comics I'm reading (New Avengers, Civil War, and Astonishing X-Men; not to mention, Wolverine), he is not carrying a sword around... that may have just been a couple issues a little while back.
what about the other titles hes in? like.... well, the rest of what marvels puts out (a phrase that is oddly fitting, given the context...).
but the fact that you can account for no sword throughout 4 titles that hes in is funny, seeing as an online friend of mine ended up blocking me over whether or not there was a point to him carrying a sword.
hey, new thread idea....
At least I know I'm not the only DC snob.

I've never read Sandman or 100 bullets, but I've heard they are awesome. I should check them out. Darkhorse is my babies daddy.
I read a bit too much DC. This last week I spent $20 on comics. For comics, that is a lot (particularly for someone who is unemployed.)

if you ever ge the chance, go to borders and look at preludes and nocturnes. the one i go to honestly doesnt mind if you spend the entire day reading one book....
No one ever answered my questions :(
I would, Ishy, but I'm not following Civil War-- I'm also letting my New Avengers subscription run out in a month or two.
So I have no clue.
Yeah... I can't help you there, Ishmayl.
I've got all issues of Heavy Metal '77 thru '80. mint condition. with the envelopes. and the comemorative binder.
That, and lots and lots and lots of old old old Flash Gordon.

Yeah, too bad they wussified him rather terribly in the movie... :(
"the movie" will not be spoken of
Indeed...
You know, there's going to be a sequel.
I heard the Surfer's going to be in it.
And a cranked-up Doom presence.
And maybe Galactus.
There should be a Green Lantern movie.
Dom Deluise can be Mogo.
There should be a non-macromedia flash movie.

Perhaps if people perceived the perils of proposing such pretenses, power would be prevalent to the proponents of the prevalent purpose!
Such cynicism saves not a single soul, so submit sensibly.
Anyone reading any books recently?
I've caught up with 52... Spoilers below.
WHY THE HELL DID THEY KILL BOOSTER???
Black Adam is quickly becoming my favorite DC character. The moral ambiguity... ooh!
The new Flash has potential.
Guy Gardner is a badass, gotta shout-out to the Corps
Civil War... Hmm, well...
Spidey is going to end up being the lynchpin, we all know it.
Ion is good, but a little slow-paced. See him battle Nero, one of his Rogue's Gallery, and become bored with stuff we already know through dialogue between Hal and Kyle! *rolls eyes*
Hank Henshaw, oh, how you tease. He just won't leave GL alone... what'd those guys ever do to him?
Got a softcover Crisis on Infinite Earths trade paperback, primarily because CoIE rocks five times to Tuesday. Yay 1985! Yay George Perez! It's in my top 5 favorite anthologies, right behind GL: Rebirth and Kingdom Come.
Aaaand... Nightwing. Haven't read it yet, but I picked it up.
What're you guys following at the moment?
Marvel 1602.
Re-reading.
All I got at the moment.
Spider's gonna get in some seriously deep shiz-nit. Have you seen the cover for Civil War 5?
Just found "Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse". Looks damn good.
Still looking for new Goons, Desolation Jones, Nextwave, BPRDs -or [hell-forbid] new hellboys
So it's mostly DC and Marvel boys on this board, huh? Unfortunate.
I read the Nightwing issue.
I remember why I don't read Bat-family books any more.
Yeah, all the not-Batman books are kinda lame most of the time; I remember some sort of Commisioner Gordon book that was fun too, but other than that, "Detective," and "Batman" are all I pay attention to.
The last good Bat stories I've read were the "Cataclysm" stories back at the turn of the millenium.
Hush was an amazing story until the very last issue. Other than that, they're all just "good," nothing that sticks out. The newest arc with Grant Morrison is looking pretty good so far.
I picked up the three most recent issues of "52", and I've got to say, it's still holding my attention.
The ending of the most recent GL Corps issue was... chilling, yet fitting.
Picked up JLA 1 and Trials of SHAZAM! 1. I like the direction of both, even if other people don't.
~ElDo
I picked up the most recent Flash today.
Griffen is going to be trouble.
Kinda tough to say what i'm reading at the moment since i just buy thetrades and not issues, but civil war does look awesome.
Currently my top serieses are Fables, Lucifer and BPRD (Mignola is amazing).
YES!!! Thank the effin gods. BPRD is the shit. The new Universal Machine series is awesome, what with all the character revealing. Johanns story was great. Captian Daimo (sic) was great to finally hear, very action movie-esque. I does suck to see roger go, though. Im just gonna re-read "hollow earth" and pretend he's still kickin.
So, I've picked up the following books recently:
GL Corps #4- Guy can't catch a break (literally)!
Outsiders #40- The last page made me laugh out loud. Rare for a book starring Nightwing.
Some Superman/Batman tales from around a year ago or so. They were pretty good.
GL 13 wasn't in stock when I went to my local comic shop last week, I'll try and get a hold of it sometime in the next two weeks.
Overall, the current series I'm planning on following:
-52 (although I won't buy them blindly)
-Outsiders (same as above)
-GL Corps (this one's a keeper)
-Flash (awesome stuff)
-Green Lantern (on a case-by-case)
-Ion, Guardian of the Universe
-Trials of SHAZAM!
I will pick up the occasional Civil War story, but I do not like the slippery slope Marvel is on.
QuoteSo it's mostly DC and Marvel boys on this board, huh? Unfortunate.
even better.
Ewww... slash....
can anyone give me a definition of "slash" (meaning, "slash culture" or "slash website", not "Slash" the guitar player or "slash" the verb) that's a few sentences long? the Wikipedia entry is just too much.
Im guessing it means... Nerd?

To my understanding: Yaoi/Yuri.
As in, gay.
It's fanfiction that pairs up two males or two females in sexual roles, where in the canonical fiction, those two would not be paired up. Or, more simply, it makes straight characters gay for added sexuality in the fiction.
*Ahem* Anyhow.
Am I the only dude on the boards keeping up with a regular DC book?

If you know which titles to follow, it's not have as bad as the craziness of Marvel.
I'm keeping up with 52 (which finally has something happening), Batman (Grant Morrison constantly rocks my world), JLA, and Detective.
Did my weekly readings.
Flash #4: Still good, although Griffen is getting on my nerves a bit.
52 #21: Enough with the space plot. More Infinity, Inc.
Amazing Spider-Man 535: Amazing, as the title suggests. Restores a glimmer of faith of Marvel in me. A glimmer.
Trials of SHAZAM! #2: A little confusing, but good. The art has a unique feel to it.

You know, seriously? He is acting like the exile's evil iron man.
The entire civil war thing seems kinda rushed and doesn't make sense. Like the characters were reading a script which read "and now you fight each other!"
Also, iron man is nothing compared to Reed Richard's "I'll build a prison! in the cthulhuian horror of the negative zone! for all my friends and kids caught superheroing!"

HOLY FEAKING CRAP!
DAREDEVIL IS AWESOME!!!!
Curretnly reading through the entirety of vol 2 of daredevil, adn it is amazing. Up until now, i had only7 read some of the older stuff (vol 1) as well as Frank Miller's run and Kevin Smith's run - both of which are amazing too. but i just finished reading the "Hardcore" storyline (where El do's pic is from) and this has cemented both daredevil as one of my favourites and increased my already immense worship of Bendis. That man is incredible. he's a genius!
Can't wait til i get to Brubaker's run as he is one of my all-time favourite writers (who else has read the "Sleeper" series?).
Daredevil is totally hard-core. he's just way more intense than the average hero. or bear for that matter.
I've been reading the following with some level of regularity:
Green Lantern
Green Lantern Corps
Ion: Guardian of the Universe
Flash: Fastest Man Alive (although the wrap-up on the first arc SUCKED)
52 (Weekly book that actually manages to come out on time!)
Action Comics (the current arc is AMAZING. PM me if you're interested in what's going on.)
Trials of Shazam!
I think that covers it. I've officially began a Marvel boycott, although I'll probably pick up Punisher: War Journal and the occasional book that catches my eye.
I follow DC more closely than Marvel, but I'm waiting until 52 is out to read it all together. But I'm on top of both. I like a lot of Vertigo stuff and while I prefer Gaiman's fiction to his comics I down with that. I have a list of above 30 webcomics that I wish I read and a list of about 10 that I actually keep current on.
On a side note: Punisher: War Journal is the best thing to come out of CW if you ask me. Also how is Trials of Shazam?

As for Trials, it's decent-- definitely a new direction for the franchaise, but I rather like the storytelling and the elements being used.

i can't tell for sure if that's sarcasm or not, but assuming it is, i would like to point out that it's a fairly short list, particularly when compared to the list of revived characters (and especially when compared to the list of living characters), and quite a few of the ones that have died in the past 5-10 years have a good chance at coming back.
if that wasn't sarcasm, then this is only to emphasis your point.
