The Dragon's Den (Archived) / Book Club
March 12, 2008, 05:58:08 PM
Hello all!

We're starting a book club over at PlotStorming for anyone who enjoys reading.

The idea is simple: bring the Alliance together to discuss some good fiction. We're kicking off the Club on PlotStorming, but I'm hoping we can circulate to the other sites. I think it would help make the Alliance community a true multi-site community.

We have a month to read a book and then come back here to discuss it. First we have to pick a book though. As per the discussion, we thought it would be a good idea to nominate our favorite books and then the president of the club will pick the book to read.

If you're interested in joining in and sinking your teeth into a good book, we'd love to see you!

Sorry Ish! I didn't even see the main news, I jumped straight to the forum. Feel free to delete this if you want!

I have to pay him every time he says that...  ;)

Thanks Ish!

Just another poke to see if the community is interested in helping Ish out with this project.

The deadline is the 27, only a few days left! There are only TWO entries thus far, you still have a good shot at winning some prizes!

PlotStorming.com was founded to help writers brainstorm collaboratively and improve their writing. Since the beginning, the site has provided a daily writing prompt - often a short passage that could come from a larger work - designed to help inspire a writer who's having a rough day.

Over 230 prompts have been written and a lot of writers have had a lot of fun with some of the prompts. However, some prompts have languished, forlornly, they've waited like the kid picked last in grade school gym, but December will be their month!

For the December contest, you have to craft a story using any three prompts from the daily writing prompt archive. Choose wisely, the prompts must be woven and featured in the larger work. The prompts don't have to reappear exactly as they were written - names and wording can be modified, but they have to be recognizable.

Summary:
Format: short story
Genre: any
Prompts: three daily writing prompts of your choice
Word Count: 1500 to 3000 words
Deadline: December 27th

Prizes:
The winners of the December Contest will receive prizes - a belated holiday present from PlotStorming.com! The winner will get their choice of goodies from Amazon.com, with the total prize value depending upon their place:

1st -  $50
2nd - $30
3rd - $20

Judging:
The judges for the contest will be the community. Creativity, originality, quality, and the ability to weave three prompts together to create a fantastic story will be the key. The community will nominate the individual that created the best piece of fiction.

If you're interested, please read the complete rules and unearth some ancient prompts. May the inspiration be with you...

Good luck!

Quote from: IshmaylGood way to start, let's just get a discussion going first, and then hopefully we can throw out a few designs by Christmas time and I can get one chosen and printed up by the first convention, which I believe Nathan said was Jan 14

Yes, I would like them in hand by Jan 14.

I would suggest something catching and eye appealing. How about having a continent or a world map as the background image for the handout? Nothing highly detailed, you're not the Cartographers, but continents and worlds are the meat of the CBG.

Quote from: Lminous CyaonI've found that the best cure for writers' block on a particular subject is to write incessantly, even if what you're writing is awful. When you want to get back to your sci-fi project, don't wait for inspiration to strike you. Sit down and write sci-fi information, even if you know with certainty that you're going to have to erase every scrap of this text later on.

Sooner or later, in the process of getting ideas on paper whether they are good or not, you will strike some sort of gold. Then that's the thing you can run with.

Great advice in general for anyone that wants to finish a project. But I it's absolutely necessary to understand this if you hope to make a living from any creative hobby - writing, art, sculpture, whatever.

Looks like there's some good participation already, very nice! I may even give this one a whirl.

For all the PlotStorming.com members out there, or any interested parties, we need your support!

Its almost time to close the voting for the Oct contest, but we only have a few votes. This contest could very well be the basis for the CBG contest next month, so come and help decide what concept you would like to work on.

You time and help is appreciated.

For me its all about the story, and less about the mechanics. So many of the monsters are underutilized and poorly realized (IMO). I really enjoy thinking about how they may interact with the environment, and making them stand out.

I write UE in the hopes that someone will use some of the ideas. If you, or anyone does, I would enjoy hearing how it comes out.

Thanks again guys. And if you have any monsters you'd like to see in UE, I'd love to hear them. They may be realized soon enough.

Thanks for the kind words. I don't know if I'll be able to do any more UE articles for the Guide, but I hope to keep it up - maybe one a month. It helps give the brain a break from the more serious writing pursuits and deadlines.

Some of you may have read my Uncommon EVIL article in Issue #7 of the Guide. Well I wrote another article for the upcoming Guide, and I had an EVIL "left over" because I couldn't get it finished until recently.

I thought the Guild members might enjoy my diabolical rendition of phase spiders:

"I can see through them! They're not human, you have to understand!" he screamed through the bars, but the guard had stuffed cotton in his ears and was quickly losing the fight against sleep. The man in tattered and dirty robes began to pace back and forth. "Too many eyes, and fangs. But where do they come from?" he muttered. "Legs, all legs!" A noise brought him to a stop - a soft whisper came from just outside the bars.

He could have imagined it, but the hair on the back of his neck and arms prickled. "They're coming!" he screamed. Then he did hear it - a squeal and a chattering, and something large slipped in the cell with him. The spider-like horror on the ceiling fluttered and shimmered into existence, rapidly gaining disgusting solidity.

The multitude of dark eyes stared down upon him, and below two vicious fangs seeped noxious poison. He dropped to the floor and crawled back to the corner, but there was no escape in the small cell.

The mage had seen too much and then dared to speak out. Luckily, the city guard believed the broken man was just a vagabond, but they couldn't take any chances. They had finally come. The broken mage whimpered and begged as the horror stalked forward.

Uncommon EVIL is done and submitted!

4300 words; three new villains to haunt and plague your campaigns!

#9, and I'm only 1/2 done with my article for #8! Eeesh...

My quick opinions, based on Raelifin's elegant tempplate:
Enh (0) = Myth [Isn't calling to me]
Yea (+1) = Incursion/Invasion [Aliens, planes, WAR!!!]
Yea = Campaign-Changing Events [Plagues, meteorites, abyssal rends in reality, limbo incursions!]
Enh = Religion [Enh]
Nay (-1) = The Underworld/UnderDark [Dark elves, drwarves, plenty of source books, oh my!]
Enh = Castles and Keeps [creating unique sites could be interesting]
Nay = Thieves, Assassins, Rogues, and Bounty Hunters [I'm sure we'll get enough villains no matter what we do ;)]

Now that I think about it, we could almost roll up the second and the third into one. Possibly?
