I've been working on an energy source called Ink for my Opus setting and I'm looking into what sort of possibilities there are with what capabilities I've assigned to it. As is, Ink has the capability to be inscribed on any surface in a special language and turn the specified material into another similar state. For instance, depending on the skill of the writer, stone can become soft clay, and then mud, and then maybe water. The more dichotomous the desired transition the harder and more time consuming the process becomes, but both can be overcome by a skilled writer. Perfected writs can be cast in iron and molded to allow Ink to be channeled through them and thus mass produced for general use (so long as they have access to Ink piping).

As is, I don't have many other specifics. I'm certain the complexity of the matter must come into play, and I'm tentatively considering that living organisms cannot be altered in such a manner. I just thought it would be neat to have special ovens that rely not on heat but on writing the unleavened bread into leavened bread with just the flick of a switch.

So, I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not. Is this sort of "matter manipulation" wonky and crazy? I've been trying to think of what sort of technology could emerge from this and the impact of it on a society.

I actually had the wisdom of Llum and Sparkletwist imparted upon me via IRC recently, and I realized some of the massive ramifications of this. I think an important factor in all of this is to drastically scale down the availability of Ink and reserve it for more specialized occasions, like a valuable but rare resource. The effects of Ink are tentatively the same in my mind, so the question is still open for answering, I just readjusted the scale.
