So the basic premise of my setting is, is that an american city gets warped into a fantasy world. Well this begs the question, did this happen before? And the answer is "yes". In fact this happens all the time... Not quite as frequently as one would think, but it does happen. In fact the native humans here on this world are descendants of people who got warped into here too. Several of the nonhuman races have actually evolved from native fauna here on the earth. But Earth isn't the only world where this happens and several creatures on this earth are alien and utterly bizarre.

This creates a weird ecological fight between several species and several creatures that are familiar to us, are either extinct, or vastly different from the way we remember them here on this planet.

So here are some ideas for the basic food chain in this world.

The main predatory group on this world is whales, but not whales as we know them.

So this world has no major land masses. It's a big collection of islands both large and small, and I began thinking about what animals could possibly fill the predatory niche in this world. Was there an island sector dominated by cats, and was their one dominated by wolves? Then I remember back to my studies of evolution when I was a little kid, and remembered that whales used to be amphibeous dog-like things (ambulocetus, Kutchicetus, Etc), and it got me thinking, "what if a group of ancient whales wound up on this world and evolved into amphibeous predators, and became the dominant predators on this world?" This creates some weird logical questions though. Why couldn't the whales evolve the way we know them? Was there something else there that kept them from filling that niche? Or was it just more comfortable going island to island and hunting on the lands for prey?

The question of dragons

I'm not quite sure how magic works in this world yet, but I definitely want it there. One thing i've been thinking about is dragons and how they affect this world. Are they large saurian monsters? Are they immortal hyper intelligent reptiles that fly? Then I began thinking about the myth of the pheonix, a large firey bird that keeps reincarnating over and over. I began thinking "what if dragons are like big primitive birds that have dinosaur features but are still birds, and they have connections to the plane of fire ore something?" But I don't know if I like that idea very much....
