I am interested in what kids these days have to say about D20 modern & D20 future in terms of game mechanics and fun'ness. I am NOT looking for commentary or reviews of the settings provided with the base games.

What has been your experience with D20 Modern/Future?
Is the D20 Modern/Future system good for an action campaign?
Are there any 3rd party OGL 'must have' supplements with cool new Feats, Equipment, etc?

Gracias

I own the d20 Modern Core book, but have never used it.  From what I've gleaned from the book, it has most of the same faults as D&D.  Sadly though, I can offer no more than that tidbit.  Hopefully someone else has more to add.

I've played it and it's a lot of fun.  I still prefer D&D, but d20 modern is, I think, the best modern RPG out there.  All I know of Future I've gotten from the SRD and my biggest gripe about it is the lack of new weapons and starship rules.  I'd go Star Wars for better starship rules, and just custom make more weapons to solve those problems.

As for action campaigns, yes definitely.  You might want to lower HP totals to get more of the one shot one kill in there though.  As is it'll take a couple crits with an M-16 to drop someone, and a high level hero or enemy could get a clip emptied into them before dropping.

The only one I can recommend is Ultramodern Firearms.  The d20 core book's gun selection is pathetic so get this one to alleviate that.  I suppose mélêe weapon selection is pathetic too, but you can use D&D weapons as is in d20 modern.

Hope that helps.

It is amazing to think of how much chaos ten trained men can wreak.  Our world as we know it is easier to destroy then we should like to think.

I ran a few adventures in d20 Modern, and it was decent. It's not my favorite system, and the abstractions of d20 can hurt a realistic vibe, if that's what you're going for. But I ran a fairly solid murder mystery/supernatural encounter/FBI conspiracy/action movie game in it. A hybrid of genres, to be sure.

It's not exactly equivalent, but I prefer Mutants & Masterminds, a system primarily for superheros. It's my guess that it could be played at low power levels to accomplish the same thing as d20 Modern, but that might be tiresome.

And holy crap, is this thread resurrection or what?

For it was all ripe for dreaming

I've run a couple of games in it, and it's decent as far as trying to make DnD work in a modern setting.  One of the things that they should've stressed more, imho, is the massive damage rules.  They almost single-handedly keep the game quasi-realistic.
