I was just wondering if anyone has tried to create their own character sheets? If so, how well did they turn out? And how did you create them (software, by hand, etc)?

MS Notepad. It's just so simple and perfect.

I have my own sheets I created using the 4 page sheets Wizards released, and modifying them through photoshop. I love them, but I'm still tweeking them.

I use a custom character sheet that I've designed using OpenOffice's equivalent of excel. What's really nice is you can go in and set things to auto-calculate when you change skill ranks, ability scores, levels, etc. And you can customize each sheet to each individual character.

Ra-Tiel, that's a very nice sheet. How did you make that?

Ra-Tiel

Simply. The background texture I got from Google (just do an image search for something like "old parchment texture" or something similar), and imported it into OOo. Basically, the whole sheet are just boxes with round corners. The larger ones are solid boxes with the parchment texture, and white "inlay" boxes making room for the contents. Then I just "worked my way inside" with smaller boxes and smaller font sizes.

The innermost "light" boxes are normal boxes with their border color (and if suitable, text color) set to "gray" instead of black. The notice at the bottom is a textbox with center alignment and a very small fontsize. The lines under the white boxes' headings are plain "line" elements, positioned appropriately. The main trick is using a good grid size and snap every element to the grid. ;) Other than that, it's just playing around with font sizes and border styles. :D

My first attempts with making sheets some years ago I did also with a spreadsheet, however I quickly realized the inherent limitations. It is impossible to position elements of different height next to each other, because the fixed row height of one element will automatically ruin the layout of the neighboring element. Therefore I quickly left Excel & co behind (at least, for that purpose) and looked for alternatives. Basically any vector drawing program (or if you're patient, raster graphics program :P ) that allows snapping to a grid will suffice.

You did an amazing job on your sheets. I hope mine turn out as well as yours did

I don't make my own sheets. I usually use these: http://www.emass-web.com/

As for auto-calculating sheets: so far I haven't seen any of those that I liked.

"Then shall the last battle be gathered on the fields of Valinor. In that day Tulkas shall strive with Melko, and on his right shall stand Fionwe and on his left Turin Turambar, son of Hurin, Conqueror of Fate; and it shall be the black sword of Turin that deals unto Melko his death and final end; and so shall the Children of Hurin and all men be avenged." - J.R.R. For an auto sheet I like the ones found here.

Especially
3.5e improved character sheet

Its not perfect, and doesn't calculate everything but it is compact, easy to read and does some calculations. I use it for my Eberron game. I like it because it easy to add non standard base classes to it.

I've also added a sheet three that holds more info regarding spells, abilities, levels. I cold upload the the revised version I am using if people want.

I have also found a really good excel sheet for DM's to track combat that sorts by initiative, tracks HP, lists savess, bonuses, etc. But I can't find where I DL it from! The sites listed in the excel sheet don't exist anymore. I will keep looking for it to post.
