Metatron's Cube

I'm having an incredibly creepy experience learning zbout this....

I remember when I was really little, maybe fourth or fifth grade, I'd get bored and draw hexagrams ("David's Star"), and something about the way a hexagon formed in the middle would intrigue me enough to try drawing itinerations of hexagrams. I'd get an almost trance-like intrest in the little doodles (always getting frustrated as unevenness became more and more apparent), even drawing lines connecting the points in the hexagrams and hexagons.

Recently, I came across a shirt with Metatron's Cube on it, and I got curious at the claim that it included all the Platonic Solids (the 3d geometrical shapes of all dice used in the d20 system, minus a d10), and something about the design really caught my eye. Through google, I managed to find a site describing Metatron's Cube, and as I followed along, something dawned on me....

I was crudely attempting a rendition of Metatron's Cube back in fourth or fifth grade, working on those itinerated hexagrams-- long before I knew what "itinerations", "hexagram", "sacred geometry", or "platonic solids" even meant! I also came to the eerie conclusion that part of my disdain for the shaoe of d10's and d12's could, quite possibly, somehow stem from my inability to include them in my crude attempts at the Cube.

Logically, I'm aware of the possibility of coincidence (and for the musically inclined, I'm also aware of Metatron's Cube possibly being the geometrical equivalent of C Major), but it somehow just feels creepy to think that almost all interest I've had in geometry, over the course of my entire life, is somehow connected to this complex yet beautiful pattern....

End note:

[spoiler The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins]In the middle of the earth in the land of the Shire
lives a brave little hobbit whom we all admire.
With his long wooden pipe,
fuzzy, woolly toes,
he lives in a hobbit-hole and everybody knows him

Bilbo! Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
He's only three feet tall
Bilbo! Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all

Now hobbits are a peace-lovin' folks you know
They don't like to hurry and they take things slow
They don't like to travel away from home
They just want to eat and be left alone
But one day Bilbo was asked to go
on a big adventure to the caves below,
to help some dwarves get back their gold
that was stolen by a dragon in the days of old.

Bilbo! Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
He's only three feet tall
Bilbo! Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all

Well he fought with the goblins!
He battled a troll!!
He riddled with Gollum!!!
A magic ring he stole!!!!
He was chased by wolves!!!!!
Lost in the forest!!!!!!
Escaped in a barrel from the elf-king's halls!!!!!!!

Bilbo! Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins
The bravest little hobbit of them all

Now he's back in his hole in the land of the Shire,
that brave little hobbit whom we all admire,
just a-sittin' on a treasure of silver and gold
a-puffin' on his pipe in his hobbit-hole.

Uh... I am familiar with the cube and have similar experiences. And yeah... "one of these things is not like the other" ...the d10 is pretty much the only common die (not counting d100s, d1000s, d30s, d3s, or any attempt at a d2 here) that isn't a platonic solid...  a three dimensional object whose faces are all equilateral polygons (there might be more to it than that, like no convex... uh... edges? it's been a while).

Anyway, I had similar obsessions and also ended up with various diagrams that were supposed to be important. Not to mention very early on I took "special" classes where I traced infinty (or a couple of variations thereon) and repeated certain nonsense words depending on where my chalk was in the diagram at that moment. Er... and I think I might have summoned something once. ;)

EDIT: Also... that rendition looks like it has a couple too many lines in places. Are you sure it's correct?

QuoteI don't believe in it anyway.
What?
England.
Just a conspiracy of cartographers, then?

SDragon

I'm actually sure it's not correct, but the only problem I can see is the center hexagon, where the lines are inexplicably doubled.

The whole thing with "special" classes didn't happen for me, but there must've been something in my mental development if I was toying around with such a design, so early on....
