I don't know much about Photoshop (I use Corel/Jasc Paintshop Pro and Inkscape), so could you explain to me what it means to be "without filters?"  Looks neat though.

Filters are "spill" effects, that are applied to entire selections. The most obvious use for them is textures, but they can produce other effects, like a "fisheye" effect. I used to rely on them heavily, but I'm realizing more and more how little control they allow, especially when used as textures.
