For finite types, like human beings, getting the mind around the concept of infinity is tough going.  Apparently, the same is true for cows.

Thanks!  I would take some sort of credit, but I didn't take the photo, and Janet Troeger wouldn't approve. :)

I know I talk about doing the contest often and never do (I am the consumate slacker), but I may actually do it this month.  This feels like something useful, as in, what I create here could actually be used in my setting.  Hmmmm... well, we'll see.

SA

Just how malleable is this contest?  I was really looking forward to it until I got to the italicised text, at which point I about-faced and concluded that was the total opposite of what I had hoped it would be.

As it stands, I won't touch that premise (mind you, it's still a very good one), but I'll be looking forward to the next.

Ishmayl-Retired

I'm not sure what you mean, SA.  What about it won't you touch, and what do you mean by malleable?

Edit:  Actually, even before SA mentioned his discontent, I was considering changing the contest to be a bit more broad, which I have now done.  I hope this gets more participation, I realized yesterday that it may be a bit too limiting the way I previously had it.

Does the area in the picture have to be the main location in your entry, or can it merely be a minor location on the island?

I've got a decent idea in mind, with how the island is deserted and who built the place, but if the aqueduct is center stage, my options are somewhat limited.

Ishmayl-Retired

Good question.  The image was just what I used for inspiration, and can be any part of the story, as long as it's included - it does not have to be a major part, though.

Fitting, I suppose. An aqueduct is transportation infrastructure. It's undeniably satisfying to think of using this one as a way to convey a narrative to other locations.

Besides, nobody builds a road that leads from nowhere to nowhere. Aqueduct's got to be connected to something, I expect.

That's funny, I always thought of it as being principally for bringing fresh water across places where it might not normally flow, but I see the wisdom of using it as transportation as well.

Completely unrelated, but one of my favourite magical sites in a sourcebook for the Hero System was a set of parallel rivers that ran in opposite directions, used for travel.

LC is probably thinking of a viaduct, which is confusingly similar.  You could even pretend that the picture is a viaduct.

Lmns Crn

I guess I was thinking of a number of things, few of which bring much clarification to my previous poorly-worded thought. For example:

1.) Yeah, viaducts
1B.) Some kind of combination aqueduct/viaduct (should I call this an "aquviaduct" or a "vaqueduct?")
2.) Some (modern) aqueducts can carry ships!
3.) Transporting water still counts as "transportation", right?
3B.) Even if it doesn't, aqueducts would still connect places of interest in logical ways that explorers could follow, I guess?
6.) ???
7.) LC has problems.

Sorry it's taking me so long to finish mine.  I do it while at work, and this weekend i'm moving to 12 hour shifts.  I should have it done by saturday night.

Ishmayl-Retired

Hey Koor, at least you've got something up.  I would say that I'm disappointed in this month's turnout, but honestly, it seems to be coming the norm around here :(

Sorry guys, my workload tonight was far more than expected, and I wasn't able to crank out a finished product.  For that reason I removed the posted submission.

However, if we're needing something for the other forums to use as a template, I'm about 75% sure I could finish it by the 27th.. (since that's when the voting would end anyways, and I was the only one to post a submission.)
