that def could work. One idea I had for Yggdrasil was to have it's roots form these portal/door entrances in all the worlds that would in turn lead to the other ones. These doors would be hidden and nigh fabled, but they would be there.

Sounds very cool.

That reminds me of C.S. Lewis' The magicians nephew. The two kids use magic rings to reach some dying world where they meet the witch who becomes the white witch, but the rings don't transport them directly to the world, rather they are brougth to a forest with hundreds of puddles. I can't remember alot of the details but they pick one of the puddles and end up in Narnia. I always assumed all of those puddles were portals to different worlds. Speaking of rings, norse mythology use rings of power quite frequently.

As a nod to the someone mentioning Finnish myth,  Vainemoinen  is really cool.

Totally haven't read all the posts here but thought I'd link to a little stuff I scratched together in a wiki for a viking-esque game I was running a few months ago.  All of this stuff was the result of a few days at the local library, and some of it seems kind of obscure but fitting.  Hope it helps.

Folk Beliefs
Social Structure

Ignore anything metagmish, as it was for a GURPS game.  The rest should be useable, though.

This technique of roleplaying has been passed down the Bloodmoon line for generations!

ok, so despite the fact that I've talked at length-ish about the other worlds of the setting, 90% of it will take place on Midgard, the world of Men. here are some ideas of different kingdoms and regions that could find their way on the world map, which is in the works and lookin' good.

1. The Hastfalt - Rolling hills ruled by horse-lords. Not unlike Rohan.
2. The Iron Halls - A loose collection of warrior halls.
3. The Kingdom of Hereot
4. The Kingdom of Tjur
5. The Gray Fens - A vile and dangerous swamp land.
6. The Neirsund Mountains - Cold.

ok that's all I have for now, thanks for the replies thus far, hopefully I should think of something else soonish.

here is a little deeper description of the Hestfelt - the Horse Fields.

[ic]The sea of amber grass spilled into the red horizon, swaying in the cold wind. The setting sun colored the plain with long shadows and warm light as the braying of the wild mares echoed in the distance. Marring the fields like isles in the sea rose steep and jagged pillars of black stone and dark pine. From atop one of these stood Soltårn, the hall of Eras, son of Ergath, Rider-Lord of the Western Hestfelt.

Carved into from the stone of the earth, Soltårn was the oldest of the halls of the Rider-Lords. It's black walls were pocked from countless wars. Once gilded carvings adorned the stonework, but time had worn them away. Above the narrow pines and walls of Soltårn rose the Tower of the Black Mare. Carved by the hand of Esulwolf, First Rider-Lord of the Hestfelt, the Tower was shaped as eight-legged Sleipnir, son of Loki and steed of Odin. There was once a time when the Northwinds would blow across the Hestfelt, and the thousand little pipes that hid inside the Tower would play the songs of the gods, but now the Tower had fallen to the decay of age with the rest of Soltårn.

From atop his hall, Eras watched the seemingly endless fields roll into the horizons. Eras had the seen the passing of many seasons, and the fell winds that blew hung heavy on his weary heart. The seers whispered rumors of the return of the jötnar from across the Ringed Sea. His council men brought warnings of war from the North as the traders brought ill news from the Iron Halls and the southern Kingdoms. As the old Rider-Lord followed the sun as it fell in the west, he knew that one day it may not return in the east...[/ic]
