ok I have to say, im on a cell phone and this is all new to me. so if my grammer is exceptionaly bad don't blame me D:!

so, to sum some stuff up. my world was split into seven pieces by the gods in response to major global war, which resulted in gnomes being almost exterminated. so when the world was split the gnome homeland had already been destroyed to the point of being a desert by orcs.

so the gods, gave the gnomes abillities to allow them to live as travelers. they took on the role of the only multi planer merchant guild. being granted the power to traverse planes as of they were one, whilst on the ocean. they now travel between worlds trading however they have no port nor ocean city. many speculate the gods also made them a world of their own.  sorry for the scatter brained post but family trauma and trying to distract myself D:

So if I'm reading this right, there's no flashy-magic teleportation or anything, they simply set sail on the sea like any ship, but via some arcane navigational trick they eventually end up reaching a port on a different plane? That is a very cool idea I can get behind.

Are gnomes the only ones able to travel between planes? Can they take other people along as passangers?

If they don't have any homeland at all, they might build specialized ships or rafts that can be amassed and connected together with chains and planks for crossing from boat to boat, thus forming floating cities.

Are there outcast gnome captains that oppose the guild by engaging in piracy and smuggling? Or is the entire race working happily in unity (or forced with iron grip) for the guild?

Yes, they are like that new class in 4th edition where they dont even have to know anything about where they are going but they would make it via shortcuts through other realms and such.

Gnomes are the only beings other then gods who can planeswalk, passengers can be taken on their vessel but its against guild code to allow any full time non-gnome passengers.

They do this! They have a few ocean cities, but most of them are just rumored to exist. Yaknow another trick those pesky gnomes are playin on ya. Most of the cities are major gnomish trade ports, they are place strategically throughout the realms to be easilly accessed for trading and as a defense they can use the "captains" boat of the city and it will jump planes with the other ships.

There is a group of smugglers both openly sailing and doing trade with the more.. Uncivilized races of the Treasures.. There is also a group of gnomes within the merchent guild that are spies for the Smugglers. Other then that they do trade with criminals who want to jump planes or simply dissapear.

The elven ships sail from middle earth to the blessed lands of aman. Ever since the destruction of numenor aman has no longer been connected to the same world as middle earth and so in order to get there one must take an elven ship (something that very few non-elves have ever been privileged to do).
