The first part of my campaign (the New Edom Campaign, as described somewhat in the Homebrew forum) takes place at Lookinghaven Academy in the Republic of New Edom. New Edom is a very young country, not much more than 70 years old, made up mostly of refugees, ex slaves and the like who fled tyranny and founded a country in a wilderness, aided by kindly demihumans.

The Lookinghaven Academy was founded by the heroic warrior Dunsinaine, to give a legacy of training and preparation to the future defenders of the country. It includes a general school of officer training as well as study under sages and study for magic-users. This latter is a small school run by a wizard called Ravel, who really teaches in her home in the town of Lookinghaven, having only a few students at a time who have the proper intelligence and ability.
Before admittence an applicant must pass a state examination, more or less demonstrating ability to reason, think through problems, a demonstrable interest in loyalty to the country and physical ability. (in other words, a minimum of 9 in all physical stats and 10 in all mental stats as well as charisma) Applicants without a good personal income may be given a scholarship and the initial purchase of their equipment provided for them. (officers of the New Edomite army provide their own mounts, basic saddlrey and arms and armor)

What I had planned for my game was something roughly similar to J.K. Rowling's books in that there would be a period of time at the College, partly to get them into character and partly to introduce them to my campaign world. There would be adventures of a sort revolving around this.

Just make sure it ends up a little more serious than Hogwarts and all that...  I personally think HP was a little too silly.  Of course, if that's what you're looking for, then I won't, and can't, stop you.

I should emphasize that this is not a magical college per se, though there is magic in my campaign world. It's really meant to be an introductory period for my campaign, which is a fairly serious one. Furthermore, it's a somewhat militaristic campaign and it's a way to get my players involved with that side of things. The only similarity to the HP series is that there would be some adventure type stuff taking place there.
