This isn't exactly on topic, but cheetahs don't scavenge.  At least, that's what I learned from Nature.

Any meat eater that gets hungry enough will scavenge.

They may try to scavenge but the bigger scavengers will shoo the cheetahs away. Plus, Hyenas eat the bones, leaving little for others to enjoy/subsist on.

If a person needs to eat 3 pounds a day, and you have 1000 people, how do you arrive at 1,312,500 pounds per day? Wouldn't it just be 3000? Or did i miss some hidden variable?

You're missing the point. It was not whether they would be able to fight off other scavengers it is whether they were capable of scavenging (which all meat eaters are... and getting back on track orca whales do it all the time).

x.  x.  x.  I failed my math check...  :hammer:  :hammer:  :hammer:  :morons:  :morons:  :morons:

I think I calculated the total calories needed...  :explode:

Revised paragraph:

Assuming a town's population to be 1000 people, the community would consume 3,000 pounds per day, far below the 95,000 pounds derived from a single whale (380,000 1/4 pounds = 95,000 pounds). With this we can see that a single Whale could yield enough food to feed the town for a little over 31 days.

And in arctic climes it should be easy to preserve the meat because to temperature, but i also reckon that my arctic civilization has an ample supply of salt and can smoke the meat if needed. Also, whale blubber is much more nutritious than ordinary meat. So if they catch whales at least a few times each week (be they bulkwhales or somewhat smaller whales) they should be able to feed a good-sized population. I might want a bit more than a thousand fed though.
