Quote from: sdragon1984- the S is for penguinwell, as of right now, the ring started out as a hollow moon.
fantasy[/i] world, which means we can play around with the rules a bit.  Maybe the protection would have been mystical in nature, and it was just the fact that the magical rings were there, emitting some sort of magical force, that diverted some terrible disaster.  Again, I'm just throwing out ideas here.

For finite types, like human beings, getting the mind around the concept of infinity is tough going.  Apparently, the same is true for cows.

I kind of like the shield/weapon dichotomy. The idea that an attack was stopped but it still has the potential to occur or whatever.

i aplogize for the confusion- i agree that nothing should be finalized yet, i was merely stating what seemed to be the current information on the ring.

and i agree on the shield/weapon thing...

I like Ishy's thing of a shield. I say that we should make them the source of magic also, they should be emitting arcane energy, but the cause of it should be unknown, and they once protected from alien invasion but the means for activation are lost to the modern world of CeBeGia. I make something like that for half of my campaigns/adventures. its just my 2 dollars (2 cents for my thoughts? What did you think, we're at a bargain sale?).

Not sure; I don't mind rings.  But if we use them, they should be used in some sort of supermatural, and mythical way (like, they're planes or something), and not in a purely scientific way.

that also. ooh! maybe they can be the "gods" of one of the cultures. Like i was recently watching season 3 of Star Trek Enterprise and they encounter this race that worships these spheres that make space very strange. maybe it could be something like that.

I think a weapon/shield dichotomy is a great idea.  I'm all for paradoxes, and having CeBeGia's #1 defense be it's greatest liability is "t3h Awesome!1" in my book.  :P

Keep in mind, some of this might not make it into the final cut...

I'll edit the description I gave to try to include some of the ideas presented since then, and we can work out whether all the ideas should stay as-is, or if anything can be eliminated.

So how many rings should there be? AND Should they be on the same plane?

Yes, as Poseidon says. i was thinking maybe 9, that is if they are going to be source of arcane magic. reasoning: one for each school (yes, im including universal). They should exist on all planes! OH! new idea: if we use the weapon/defense thingy that requires complex old majigger to use, then because they are the source of arcane energy, when used once, their energy is nearly completely depleted, making it extremely difficult to cast spells. they slowly regain their power over the years. (i'm thinking maybe a century or two to fully charge). Maybe we chould use Hapazzard Casting for CeBeGia? then we could just make it a penalty on spellcraft checks.

I don't know about that last little bit. Does that mean every arcane spell casted within a century or two of the last arcane spell has a chance of blowing up the world? Seems a bit too fragile for me.

Anyways, I tried to incorporate as many of these ideas as I could remember, and here's the result:

Quote from: Corn*pulls out idea blender and sets it to liquefy*
*pours out the following result*

The rings were originally a moon of CeBeGia. This moon was hollow, and contained a magical demiplane. Aeons ago, the moon managed to block an attack from a mysterious outsider, sending fragments all through its orbit. Instead of dissipating, the demiplane that was inside the moon split into nine, each of one which stretched between the fragments, binding the fragments into nine seperate rings. The former inhabitants of this demiplane now exist amongst the rings. A powerful energy eminates from the boundaries of each of these demiplanes, and their effects manifest themselves on the world as the nine schools of arcane magic.

It is rumored that these demiplanes are somehow intrinsically linked to the fragments, and wizards have, on rare occasions, been known to talk in hushed tones about the disaster that may befall the world if the fragments were somehow seperated from the power of the planes...

Hmm....how about we have some religion following the rings? i brought it up on the Wrold discussion and it was moved over here.

I support this:

I like leaving the destructive power of the rings up to individual DM's decisions.

Do the rings orbit in the same z axis or do they surround the planet at different angles?
