A Guideline or Two

Hey guys,
You're welcome to let me know if you disagree, but I think each PbP campaign should be divided into two threads: Pre-game exposition and Out-of-Character chat and content in one thread, and another thread that is nothing but in-character.  That way, if something needs to be discussed out of character, it can be done in the OOC thread for it, without disrupting gameplay.
Anyhoo, cheers!

For finite types, like human beings, getting the mind around the concept of infinity is tough going.  Apparently, the same is true for cows.

I agree. I think it is important for us to have this guideline for the PbP threads.

EDIT: I also think it would be good to clearly mark OOC and IC threads. Lots of places have a seperate forum. I think we could start with putting (OOC) and (IC) in the thread name

Lmns Crn

Thanks for the addition of the forum. I'm planning to make good use of it when my schedule calms down a bit.

IC and OOC-only threads hadn't occurred to me, but that's because I don't do play-by-post very much. I might suggest that DMs running in a play-by-post format extend this idea even further, and ask their players to make new in-character accounts, for exclusive use in those threads. Maybe that's a little overboard, but I think it would make PBP games more immersive, and I always consider that a good thing.

I think that would, indeed, make the games more immersive...however, I think it is not a good idea.  It would only cause problems.

Ishmayl-Retired

I say ix-nay on the new character accounts... it will just make things confusing when someone's logged in under the wrong account and posts in the game, or when they're logged into the wrong account and posts in another thread.  Just put your character's name in bold at the top of each post, so that that's the last name someone sees before reading the text, and everything will be fine.

Not necessarily, I think. The sig or custom title of a "character account" could include the name of the poster's main account, so that we know who's who.

After that, it's just a matter of making sure you know whether you're logged in as your main account or as your play-by-post character. Posts that get made under the wrong account by mistake can always be deleted and reposted under the correct account.

It's extra trouble, sure, but I don't think it's prohibitive on its own. (Ishy's word of law nonwithstanding. :) ) For a PBP game, it seems to me that the benefits of things like character portrait user icons, and the further divorcing of character from player (and the easier suspension of disbelief it facilitates) would make up for a great deal of inconvenience. That's just my two cents, though.

Edited: Ishmayl beat me to the reply.

Well, although it might be cool, I don't think it would be worth the hassle. However, if someone wants to do that, it would be cool.

One idea: Is it possible to, at a later date, make seperate IC and OOC subforms to this forums? I'm probably going to run some homebrew games over the summer to test out my settings, and it would be nice to see that.

It's possibly, but right now, this forum isn't really getting much use, other than the one campaign, so we'll probably hold off for the time being.

After reading over the gaming going on here, I have to say I'm really liking the red and green IC and OOC boxes.

The system actually accomplishes most of what I had in mind when I suggested seperate IC-only accounts some months ago, earlier in this thread, with considerably less hassle. It makes it easy to see at a glance what's going on, to skim a thread for IC responses only (or what have you), and to see what *character* is saying and doing what.

I'll push my luck and say that if we could set up character portrait images about the size of these user icons and tie them to the green IC text boxes, I'd be absolutely on cloud nine. But I like the current setup quite well enough with no changes.

I'm not sure if that's possible, LC, but I'll talk to daggerhart and see what he thinks :)  Glad you're back!

brainface

i think we'll let you field this one, ish :D

you can probably actually achieve an effect like what you're talking about with clever use of ic and attached images. even if we made an image attribute for ic, you'd probably have to specifiy an url, as opposed to us hosting an image.

(you'd have to do something like
[ic=bob img='http://fileshak/whatever/adragon.jpg]'something said'[/ic]
)

dagg might have more ideas, though.

[ic=Jon]   I suppose you could always just use the current 'img' tags for putting a character image up, whereever you like. [/ic]
