Ok, just wanted to make sure you meant "own" and not "destroy" :)

LD

I'll admit, before I looked it up on Urban Dictionary, I always thought that p3wned just meant "owned" rather than "destroyed."

For example, crackers p3wn computer systems.
But I guess the more common usage is with FPS players :o.

Elemental_Elf

I've always read pwn has having 2 distinct meanings:

1. "PWNED!!!" meaning you destroyed/beat someone/thing handily

2. "pwn" meaning you misspelled own ('p' is right next to 'o' on a keyboard, its a common typo).

CoyoteCamouflage

As far as how/when/why I use that particular term, I generally see it meant in terms to soundly beating an opponent in some fashion. I do not think it necessarily means blown up or destroyed (though in most situations, getting in your enemy's base and killin' all his dudes is usually a good way to win), but rather that a victory is beyond being contested, and was never anything but your lead the entire way.

In other words, I think the actual meaning of the word roughly translates to a sound victory. It's just been so heavily bastardized to become something a little more amorphous in meaning now. Like "Woot!".

It also is a pretty common typo, and that is probably the reason it came into being in the first place. A lot of internet phrases are like that.

Still, never heard it used to replace "owned". I think that's just your lack of knowledge concerning internet culture. And I'm really surprised I haven't yelled at you about that before, LD. :P

Actually, here's where my confusion came from

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pwn

Apparently, Pwn is different from P3wn, which is not something I realized. It's also why I was very confused that Urban Dictionary defined P3wn as to "destroy" or slaughter because that makes no sense in certain hacking circumstances (which is where I first came across the term); so to "destroy" doesn't make much sense unless you're destroying a system, which isn't what usually happens.

It seems that Pwn is what I should have written, not P3wn. Weirdly enough, the two have different definitions.

And CC, I think you lack knowledge about hacking culture. I agree that I am not as familiar with FPS-speak as others (and I admit that I didn't make the connection between the cat with the rainbows and the 'Nyan cat' for probably about a year after I started seeing references to both--somehow I knew both existed but had no idea they were related); but I do know my hacking terms.

QuoteIn hacker jargon, pwn means to compromise or control, specifically another computer (server or PC), web site, gateway device, or application. It is synonymous with one of the definitions of hacking or cracking. The Pwnie Awards are awarded by a group of security researchers.[4]

On a game note: Lini's quite shocked that Kai knows Quarian. :D

CoyoteCamouflage

I never claimed to have knowledge of hacking culture. But general internet and gaming culture? Yes, I have that in abundance, if only because they are the only cultures that I am exposed to at this point in time. I am also keenly aware that this is probably not a good thing.

Also, you might have missed it, but there was a train of about... 7 or so people running through the Circle Center Mall as the Nyan-Cat during Gencon. The first one was wearing a big cardboard poptart-cat, and the others behind him were all holding the giant rainbow. One of them also had a speaker playing that damn noise as loud as they could.

It was both annoying as hell and extremely amusing at the same time.

Ok, CC. :)

Well shoot. I actually did miss the Nyan Cat :(

Which day was that? That must have been hilarious. And how old were the performers? High school, college, or adults?

I didn't even see them in the video of the costume parade.

Just FYI, both Archimedes and Sal can take their extra move action granted by Kai.

Elemental_Elf

If Ninja doesn't respond by 7 tonight, I'll have Sal act.

I'm thinking she will get out near you guys, drawing her Pistol as she moves. If Kai mentions the particulars of his little deal, then she'll move again, into a particular room. If not, then she'll set up next to Kai and ready an action to shoot the Eclipse Mercs if they become hostile to the Drone and/or you guys.

One of the coolest lines written in the game thread. To bad it was preceded by a nat 1 on the Combat Drone's attack roll!

Ninja D!

7 is still in my sleeping time. Having Sal act is fine, though, since I've been awful about keeping up lately. Checking out the game thread now...

LD

Ninja- You still have an action that you could make. EE took 2 turns for you, but you were second in line to go once the new turn started. (Unless I'm still confused... but I think EE set me straight).

Elemental_Elf

All enemies took their turn and we started a new turn. The initiative for this combat is kind of woky because all the enemies either rolled above or below you 4.

Elemental_Elf

You guys are free to take more than 1 weapon, I'll allow you to snag multiple at the same time.

LD

Multiple weapons you say? What is this, EE, Libya?

QuoteAt the Gadhafi compound, Abdel Aziz, a Tripoli resident who was carrying two AK-47 assault rifles and a sniper rifle, made his own pledge. "I will fight for my country and turn them back into the government when we are free," he said.
