isn't[/i] potentially better than the original movie.  The original Conan movie was so bad it became sublime.  The cast was inept and everything else was ridiculous; Arnold's lines were like some kind of extended empty-headed koan, and the whole mess is set to an overwhelmingly bombastic epic score that transmutes the tragedy into farce.  It's so terrible that it's hilarious - it's the funniest movie I've ever seen.  Comedy movies may have jokes, but there are entire scenes of this movie when I can't stop laughing.

Judging from the trailer, the "New Conan" will be bad.  But for it to be worse than the old one would require a journey into the realm of theology.  It couldn't merely be bad - after Arnold, there's simply no space left on that end of the quality spectrum.  It would have to actually be evil.  And I'm not sure that would be very funny at all.

While I don't have much to add to the conversation I saw this and just had to drop in to say that this is quite possibly the most awesome thing I've ever heard you say PC (which is saying alot as you say many awesome things). I honestly laughed. Hard.

Hmm. All very, very good points. I admittedly find it difficult to articulate just why I liked the original so much (and I did, however bad it was) while regarding this new iteration with such disdain. I'm more than happy to concede a little personal insanity in that respect and bow to the broader consensus.

I second Nomadic, PC. I seriously laughed at that comment, too.

And I'm psyched for the movie.

But when are they going to remake Zardoz?

Superfluous Crow

I'd rather be without a remake of Zardoz to be honest. I think its only redeeming feature is its... uniqueness. And Sean Connery.

But that's the problem!

The old one was so bad it's awesome!
This one is probably going to just be... bad. :P

Oh Zardoz.  Whenever someone asks me about that movie, I just tell them "Sean Connery steals Burt Reynolds' mustache and runs around in a red thong sexing everything on two legs."

Kindling

I am excited about the new Conan movie, but only because I get excited about anything Conan. I was excited about the Conan video game a couple of years ago, and played it for days on end, despite it being a glitchy, sub-standard God of War rip-off. I still enjoyed it, because sometimes when Conan killed someone he shouted things like "One less dog on the streets!" or when someone successfully landed a blow on him he would exclaim "You scratch like a child!"
These things are pleasing to me.

That said, the only Conan media I expect true quality from, rather than just shallow entertainment, are the original REH stories. So, I'm not disappointed with the way this film looks at all - it's about what I was expecting. I'll still watch it, probably with a beer or two inside me, and most likely enjoy it.
