So.

I realize there's a ton of variety in what we play, in the settings we write, in the things we're interested in trying out.

I propose... we run a con.

What I mean being: we take a couple of weeks, or maybe a month, and just try to run a bunch of one-shots. Lots of different GMs, lots of different settings, lots of different game systems, plenty variety. I'm interested in getting to play things I don't normally get to play, and getting to run stuff I haven't gotten to run much before (or at all). I think this could be a great way to jazz up community interactions, get people involved in other settings, and generally give people the opportunity to try out new things. And for me, it gives me an excuse to end my hyperpreparatory self-sabotage, because I don't have to craft a delicate origami flower (an elaborate and genius campaign), I just have to throw a paper airplane (run a little casual one-shot).

Thoughts? Interest?

I am completely on board with this!  I already wanted to run a Q&D Cad Goleor One-Shot, so a con where we played a bunch of different one-shots sounds like the perfect time.

And I can think of a few settings I'd like to get the chance to play in.

Count me in.

I think if everyone who wants to join gets to run one game and plays in (almost) all of the others, that'll be a nice little play group, too. :D

Numinous

Sounds kickass.  I'd run something for sure.

I would love to have the time to be part of this... maybe if it happens again sometime :)

Depending on when you're thinking of doing this, I would totally participate.  Most times in the first half of the new year I'm available, except a chunk of February.

Some other ideas:

1) "Panel Discussions," perhaps over Skype, where we talk about some kind of topic in world-building (some thoughts off the top of my head: dystopian worlds, "simulationism vs narrativism: a false dichotomy?", ___punk, play by post forum game design).

2) Some kind of entirely impromptu/improvised gaming session where we rotate GMs every 10 minutes, making up characters, setting, plot, and even rules as we go.

3) A collaborative world-building session of some kind.

So wait is this just an online thing or are we actually gathering at some place?

If it's just online then i'd be happy to participate!

Sounds fun!  Also reminds me of the small con my college Geek Club ran.  They had panels about all sorts of "nerdly" topics, and my senior year, I played in a game called... I think it was "Pantheon" where everyone at the table was a god.  You took turns filling in details of the world, and then created a race of followers, who would interact with everyone else's followers however you both saw fit.

Pretty sure LC just means online!!

Alright! As long as it's not between christmas and new years I can probably participate.

I wouldn't worry about that.  If multiple people are going to run one-shots, then it's going to take some time to prepare for it.

Clarifications!

Definitely online.

Probably February or March, to give people the opportunity to survive the holidays and have some time to plan their oneshots.

I like the idea of panel sessions or collaborative worldbuilding or et cetera, but I think someone else is going to have to be the one to set that sort of thing up.

Nomadic

I'm totally up for this. With the new Fate Core coming out I'll probably run something with that. It's a really simple system to learn and lots of fun.

Humabout

If I'm available when this happens, I'll be glad to run intro gurps games.  Hell, I'm up to do that anytime anyone wants to partake in one!

If it's in Feb, I cannot participate, but there's no guarantee I could participate if it's in another month- I have a schedule that is much in flux. (It's just a sure thing that February is impossible for me to run something; I may be able to play if it's the first week).

Panel discussions on the IRC channel would be interesting; if we could use subchannels for different 'rooms'. My understanding is that we have 2 channels; #thecbg and #celtricia?

Another option is to conduct discussions on Skype! so that we can hear each others' voices and it's more like a real con. I've done multiple calls with as many as 6 people in the conversation with no issues.
