Look mom I'm on a podcast

Hi guys.  I just thought I'd plug a podcast I was recently on - S.S. Librarianship.  The podcast is put together by my wife and her colleague (both are members of my regular D&D group) and is themed around library-related matters, but they talk about geek/nerd culture more generally quite a lot on it.  The recent episode I was on is Episode 9, their Halloween special - the whole episode is worth listening to and I participate throughout but the parts I'm featured the most on start at around 19:45 and at 54:40 (the first segment I talk about some of my favorite horror stuff, while in the second I talk about my academic research).  I was on an earlier episode as well (Episode 3) where I talked a bit about alignment.

I got a JavaScript security error when I try to play it.

{edit - it's playing now :) }
Current project : D&D - The Middle Lands of Keltor - The Thread - The setting's PDF

Last project : Gamma World - The Village of Attwatta - The Guardian is Dead

Side project : Little Fears - Grace Home for Lost Children - A setting and adventure

If anyone else has any trouble, my wife says that the best way to circumvent any errors is to download the episode directly (there's a link under each episode's interface/media bar to do so).

That was a fun podcast :)

Your area of research sounds fascinating!  Horror is what sings to me, always has.

Glad you enjoyed it!  I think it's a pretty interesting topic.  Much has been written on horror as a whole and there are a number of theories concerning the aesthetics of horror as a genre and the paradox of aversion (though as I mention in the podcast I think most of those are flawed), but comparatively little on the aesthetics of disgust in horror.

I do have a few publications on the subject - two articles in Horror Studies (although the cost for the PDF is so high anyone interested who didn't have free access through an institutional subscription would be better off subscribing to the journal or purchasing an entire issue than buying articles piecemeal), currently, and another soon to be published in Science Fiction Studies.

I really would love to read those. Do you think there's any chance I could get access to them through my University library? They have a lot of access to research topics like that which they make available to the students.

Oh btw regarding the podcast, on your bit about loving The Descent, are you familiar with Ted the Caver?

Steerpike

I'll have to look into Ted the Caver!

It's possible, if they pay for an institutional subscription to the journal; or, if a partnered library has it, you could get an inter-library loan.  It's a fairly new journal so it isn't as widely available as it could be and hopefully one day will be.

I'll have to look at that too, my wife has just returned to university so maybe she can get it.
