What's up with this guy??  Anyone know what he's talking about that made him rant that way?  If anyone happens to know him and which particular thread he's speaking of, I would like to know.  Maybe it's just a misunderstanding.

my theory, as i suggested over there, is that he came across www.thecbg.com and not here. y'know, those profit-based ripoffs of communities such as ours tend to run nerves ragged.

other then him having accidently going to a wrong site, i have no clue where his rant came from. honestly, i havent seen anything like what he says happen over here.

Maybe he decided to read half of the first page of the Avayevnon thread (chose to ignore my self-censorship) and based his opinion solely on that??

I'd be happy to question him and try to encourage a more open-minded approach to the guild, but I'm sure someone else would be a better fit. ;)

I can't post in that thread, because I forgot my WotC logon information. :(

I certainly can't think of any specific events he might be referring to, but then again, I've been scarce around here lately for the last few months myself.

I know we've had discussions in which people have suggested that setting authors take steps to make their worlds more original, but those comments have always struck me as good-natured and constructive criticism, and not "screaming about plagiarism" or anything of that nature.

My instinct says that one of two things must have been going on. Either a misunderstanding of tone and intent occurred (considering our textual format, such things certainly can happen!), or someone used to exclusively receiving positive feedback has not yet been made aware of the gentle, healiing power of constructive criticism.

I just wish I could see the specific posts he's referring to. I assume from his posts that it's feedback to a specific setting (or more than one) that's gotten him riled, and not one of our brawls in Theme Wars or similar threads.

it's possible he was refering to those, but i agree; it seems more like he was refering to one or more setting thread(s).

the "elitist attitude" he mentions, though, could be that we do tend to talk less casually then some might be used to. i mean, you've got to admit, the phrase "textual format" isn't exactly something that pops up in most peoples' day-to-day conversations.

no apology needed, as far as i'm concerned. personally, i appreciate the way that sort of intelligence pops up here. remember, i'm the guy who posted a geometric formula in the draggons den a few months ago. even got some help on refining it, too.

Oddly enough, Hochiu's only posts were back in August of last year, so whatever prompted his criticism must not have stemmed from something that was said in response to one of his own posts.

If he ever posts a link to whatever it was that rubbed him the wrong way, someone be sure to post it here so I'm sure to see it. I'm interested to find out what specific instances he's talking about.

Seems that way to me, unless he's just been sitting on this criticism for a while before posting about it.

He says he visited the site for a while, went on hiatus for a while, and saw the things that bothered him after he returned from hiatus. So I assume the things he's objecting to happened during the hiatus.

If I were a betting man, I'd lay money on the rants in the Seraphine_Harmonium's thread, which were largely self-regulated by the people who posted them, even before mod action was taken. I get a sense that they were left in their original posts in the spirit of full disclosure, to avoid giving the impression that they were posted to flame, then edited away to make the perpetrators seem more innocent. And if you ask me, if you're going to post a rant like that, that's exactly how you ideally should handle it afterward: leave the record of what you said, but mitigate the rancor and bile.

For my part, I agree with Hochiu!  And he should be gone, the thin-skinned dweeb, if he can't take the instructive bite of sarcasm or the perditious cleansing of scorn!  If it were not for the piercing light of disdain with which we shield ourselves from the vagaries of mere fashion and the trivial tide of novelty, this forum would be a hodge-podge of ideation, random contemplation, and frivolous frippery!

...oh wait, that's kind of what we are, isn't it?  Never mind.

Edit: Okay, hold it.  I just realized that could be taken the wrong way, especially the word 'trivial'.  This site isn't trivial to me - I truly enjoy what I read here, and feel genuinely guilty at my own dearth of productive posts.  I perceive herein a spirit of inspiration combined with erudition that refreshes the mind of the reader, or at least this one, and even those posters who probably don't consider themselves erudite demonstrate a sincere effort at innovation that occasionally succeeds wonderfully.

This whole post was more or less a joke, and should be read as such - funny, or an attempt thereat, and at worst truly trivial.

You may now continue with your regularly scheduled musing.
