This guy is my hero

Quote from: anonymousI think I just permanently lost a friend.

We were arguing, and I ended up insulting his character "build". He took this as a great insult to his pride, and said that I wished I could make half as good a character as he could. The rest of the group, rather than trying to calm things down, ended up escalating it into a challenge, where the two of us would make 20th level, fully outfitted 3.5 characters and face them off against each other.

I took a guess. I built my character under a single assumption, based on what characters he liked best. The next week, we presented our characters to the DM. He spent ten minutes looking at the other guy's character, and raised a few objections. He said the math was off, some of the abilities/feats were taken from overpowered 3rd-party books (if they even came from books), and basically called it the most broken character he had ever seen, without revealing anything specific. He then looked at mine, and just laughed. He okayed both, not changing a thing.

We rolled initiative. He won, moved into melee range, and attacked with his rapier. He rolled an 8, and announced not only was it a crit, it would deal double sneak attack damage, for an additional 24d6 points of damage (which, because our houserules doubled ALL damage on a critical hit, meant that it was an an extra 48d6 points of damage). The DM told him it was just a normal hit. Not even a crit, not even normal sneak attack because he caught me flatfooted. My opponent said that even If I was a construct or undead, it would still work because of a feat he had selected. The DM revealed I was just playing a human. After I beat his character (it took a fair amount of time, because his AC was so high), the character sheets were revealed.

His character was absolutely ridiculous. He had three templates tacked on (without appropriate LA), and some weird class and prestige class I had never heard of in my life. All of his feats and items were put into making his sneak attack and crit threat as powerful as possible. I hadn't really bothered too much with my character. I made a straight forward 20th level Paladin. Wearing Heavy Fortification armor.

I'm guessing the author of that little anecdote, who made the paladin character. I am, likewise, impressed.

Ninja D!

I guess I don't get what is impressive.

Also, everything looks so much nicer on my desktop computer.

The guy who he "insulted" built a total twink character using dubious math and resources. The entire purpose of his character was to maximize his sneak attack damage. The other guy made a plain paladin with heavy fortification armor. Fortification does this to armor:

"This suit of armor or shield produces a magical force that protects vital areas of the wearer more effectively. When a critical hit or sneak attack is scored on the wearer, there is a chance that the critical hit or sneak attack is negated and damage is instead rolled normally.

Light: 25%
Moderate: 75%
Heavy: 100% "
