It was an old pirate punishment (the kind ones just made you walk the plank). Whether it was a captive, or a mutinous crew member when the captain was upset someone got the barnacle back scratch. :)

Character Background and Description
Stris's first year is something he doesn't talk much about. The main details are that he was hatched as the pet of an adventurer of some wealth and infamy, and he acted as the man's companion and accomplice.
