Now's as good of a time as any! As for you not knowing what this thread is for, maybe we could add "(introductions)" or something to the thread title?

It would be helpful. At first I thought this thread was an art gallery (by an artist called "Rogue") or something similar.

Hello,
I am TankSpill.  I am working on a 4E campaign called Shards of Redemption, which is based in an alternative-history-post-apocalyptic America.  I look forward to playing in your playground.

Magnus Pym

Hi there,

I'm from the "frozen north" and am awaiting training camp for the forces. I can't wait 'till they call me, I've been waiting for nearly a year. But I'm dedicated, headstrong and sure that this be the right path for me.

My biggest interest, I think, is politics. International politics... I'm concerned about what happens home as much as what happens afar. I read the newspaper every time I can (that's right, I even have my newspaper website opened right now) and subscribed to STRATFOR. I guess we could call the organization a geopolitical discussion group. Despise the fact that I love politics, I don't think I would like being an actual politician... maybe an advisor? The funny thing is I was not interested in all this even two years ago. I have made great progress in my overall knowledge of the world and its different cultures, but still have a long way to go.

I was always interested in roleplaying games since we've shown me D&D 2E in elementary school (5th grade). I'm a very creative person and so D&D (or roleplaying games in general) brought me the possibility to open my mind to new things and even create my own.

Why I say this is because, I firmly believe, now in my twenties, that it's the roleplaying games and my creativeness that fed my interest for politics. And now I'm addicted. Human sciences, political the most, is my drug.

I have never played much D&D, in fact, I think I only played two games in my whole life and I must say I wasn't really concentrated. I'm more the guy that made the adventures and watched the people play it kind of guy.

So, I've played D&D 2E and GURPS, that's it. Even though I used to own the D&D 3.5E books including my favorite; Book of Vile Darkness... yummy.

Strengths and weaknesses in game design

I liked this because it had me think about what WERE my strong and weak points. I guess my strong point is that I can create a worldwide or local plot in less than a fraction of a second. And it's going to be a good one, could be a cliche, but doesn't mean it's cliche that it's no good. My weak point would be I might think too big. Sometimes when I look at my scrap papers, my notes and all, I see great things have been done... but no details! That's a major weak point I've had for long, but I'm working on it.

I usually like WoTC settings. Forgotten Realms, well needless to say, I've GROWN with it. I liked Greyhawk and Dark Sun seems like the kind of setting I've been looking for all my life. Too bad I haven't taken the time to look at it yet, only bits and pieces. On the other side, I'm currently in touch with the designer of Age Past, look it up, it will be epic... as in one of the best I've ever seen. It's currently in production.

My major influences on world creation would be the real world, but also pretty much anything I can get my hands on. Fantasy allows one to make use of anything and make it believable. Star Wars, I like... Forgotten Realms, I like... Mythology (real world mythology here), I like. To sum this up, anything.

I think this describes my reason for being here and I believe this is a decent introduction.

Here hoping I'm going to enjoy my stay and get to learn things, cheers!
Magnus

Welcome to the CBG, and congratulations on finding this thread. I hope you find some settings that may interest you to read here and that you end up posting some of your own work.

Hello all.

Just joined up.  I am in the process of turning my homebrew world into a wiki, after 21 years of keeping it primarily on paper in file boxes.  The wiki has been a huge aid that has totally rejuvenated my interest in working on the world.  Paper got so unwieldy after a time that getting anything done felt like work.  Modern technology has made it fun again.  The wiki is on-line at http://maragtorok.com/wiki/ and comments are always welcome.

Gaming systems you use

We pretty much stick to AD&D 1E and 2E - more 2E these days.  I've never actually looked at any of the more modern products.

General gaming history

I've been gaming since I was something like 12.  I started with the original D&D white box, moved to 1E AD&D, switched to 2E a couple years after it came out, and pretty much stuck there.  Used to play a lot of Gamma World as well, but it has been a very long time since I last dusted it off.  I'm lucky to be part of a gaming group that has been together for many years in which most people take duties as player and GM, with a variety of campaign worlds represented.  I get more GM than player time these days, but enjoy both.

Personal likes and dislikes

I like to build the world and I like to game, but I don't like to spend a lot of time obsessing about rules.

Strengths and weaknesses in game design

Weaknesses - I have plenty.  I am a terrible artist.  Maps are such an important part of world design that can be a frustration.  I'm also lazy.  There is a great deal of information in my head that I would only need to sit down and type out, but the progress is still plodding.  But, hey, it's a hobby.

Strengths - well I have encyclopedic knowledge of a fictional place. ;)

What published settings have you used/do you like?

I've never used one, but I read Blackmoor, the Judges Guild City State, and Greyhawk and found plenty to like in each of them.  My very earliest campaign materials were modeled on the Judges Guild stuff.

Major influences on your world-building

Everything.  The older I get, the easier world-building becomes.  I ought to be able to put together a really awesome campaign if I live to be 80.  Since world building is an all-encompassing endeavor with regard to human knowledge, almost every new thing I learn can be applied to the world.

Nomadic

Welcome to the guild Bill, enjoy your stay. I can't wait to see what you have to show us ;)

Bill,
We'll have a lot to talk about.  I understand the transferal to the wiki thing quite well...

Hello all. My name is John Tougas and I found this very interesting site from a link at the Cartographers Guild (of which I am a member)

Gaming systems you use: I am a grognard in every sense of the word as I have only used 2e for D+D. It has been several years since I have actively played however.

General gaming history: I started playing in 1980 with 1e and for the next 20 years had the privilege of playing in the same group and the same campaign. Of course during that time all the players were also DMing their own campaigns as well This is where my homebrew was born.

Strengths and weaknesses in game design: If I had to narrow it down, I'd say that some of my weaknesses include: Motivation. I sometimes have hard time staying focused on whatever I'm working on at the moment. Deity Creation. I have struggled with creating plausible deities from time to time. Strengths: Cartography. Thank god for the digital age. I was decent with pen and paper but I can do SO much better with software, not to mention the fact that drawing a city of 100k is a bit easier on the computer than by hand. Character creation. I enjoy the processes of creating NPCs their history, their motivations and of course their secrets.

What published settings have you used/do you like?: I am a HUGE fan of the World of Greyhawk setting. So much so that my own campaign setting is set in the WoG. The Forgotten Realms of course is another beautiful setting that has given me much inspiration as well.

I hope to learn from everyone and also be able to contribute. So thank you for letting me join :)
