Master Hagortough

Intro:
Grendor Hagortough is the name of a dwarven paladin I made, which I haven't played all that often (I usually play as the magic user when in a group). I'm in college now as a double major (Pre-Med and Art), I'm also an EMT and a born-again chrisitian and also enjoy playing video games, writing stories, and spending summers with friends.

-Gaming systems you use
I've only played DnD v3.5 so far, I've never played a scripted, published setting; they've all been homebrew so far. I do want to try and play a d20 modern campaign heavily influenced by Cowboy Bebop.

-General gaming history
I've been playing for 4.5 years now (since 2003 back in high school).

-Personal likes and dislikes
I like: Fantasy novels, drawing, rolling natural 20's, riding on an ambulance, shooting the breeze with friends.

I dislike: bad DMing, meta-gamers, people who pretend to know what they're talking about, Myspace.

-Strengths and weaknesses in game design
When it comes to creating games and adventures for people to play, they usually go unfinished (maybe they're to long or something?), I feel that i'm good with creating imagery and texture but lack in game pacing.

-What published settings have you used/do you like?
Never used one

-Major influences on your world-building
can't say that i have any, but i do get a little of something from here and there, such as Dragonlance, Zelda (as far as costumes go), everything else i try to be as original as possible in.

Hibou

Welcome, everyone, to the CBG. I hope you all enjoy your stay and find it the best place to watch your setting and those of others grow. :)

Bill Volk

I just realized that I haven't posted here yet!

Gaming systems you use
I mostly use D&D 3.5, but I'm not a loyalist. I've run Unknown Armies, M&M, BESM, Exalted and WFRP, I've made my own system called All Kinds of Awesome, and I hope to try Dogs in the Vineyard soon.

General gaming history
I've roleplayed for about seven years now, haven gotten to it indirectly through PC games like Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment.

Personal likes and dislikes
I'm not a huge fan of investigation or overly complicated politics, primarily because they require a lot of attention and note-taking on the part of players but don't do much to grab said attention. I'm also not a fan of DM-wanks: the DM should make sure that he's connecting with the players and putting them first.
As far as the real world, I like comics, old German films, fencing, Wesley Willis, and keeping away from the Day Star. I dislike politics, team sports, and C.S. Lewis.

Strengths and weaknesses in game design
I count on making up a lot of things on the fly, during the game session. My strength is that I can pull it off well sometimes; my weakness is that I rely on it.

What published settings have you used/do you like?
I'm partial toward Planescape, if for no other reason than that Torment was one of my first experiencs with D&D-ish systems. I also liked the Exalted setting. I like what Eberron is trying to do, but I think the execution is all wrong. Forgotten Realms bugs me; the only reason I can see for people to run it is the desire to self-insert one's own crap into the crap of so many other authors and game designers. I've never used it, but X-Crawl is the most wonderful idea for a D&D setting I've ever heard.

Major influences on your world-building
I've stolen from Lovecraft (both his horror and his fantasy,) Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, a little bit from the Legend of Mana, Flatland, my dreams, other people's dreams, and, of course, Tolkien.

Pellanor

Yo, random Newb here.

I've been roll playing since Y2K, and starting DMing regularly in Spring of 05. I've only ever DMed DnD 3.5, though I've played a number of other systems including Vampire, Werewolf, DBZ, Zero, RIFTS, Heroes Unlimited and Battletech.

I've never run a game in a published setting, but of the ones I've played, RIFTS is my favourite. Eberron does look interesting though.

As for my campaign settings, I currently have a handful that I'm working on. One is for the game we're currently playing, and was the first setting I ever designed. I'm not really happy with it, due to how it's kind of been hashed together as our campaign progressed, but the players are having fun with it, so I must be doing something right. Another one I just started a few weeks ago, and is based on a a terraformed, somewhat modified version of Venus. The pantheon has been greatly inspired by the Malazan book of the Fallen series. This setting is also the reason I've been scanning the web for campaign design advise.

I've got another three settings that are really just sitting on the back burner right now. Two of them are for video games, one of which probably won't ever get that fleshed out. The other was one that I was doing a little work on earlier this year, but something never really felt right about it, so now I'm probably just going to ditch it.

Now for a bit about myself.

I'm a computer programmer by profession. I've always wanted to write a video game, but haven't got around to it yet.

Likes include: RPGs, Anime, Basketball, Laser Quest, Computer Stuff, DDR, Hot Chicks.
Dislikes include: Most rap, IE, DRM, the lack of hot chicks around me.

Oh yeah, I should also warn you that I can be a sarcastic prick.
One of these days I'll actually get organized enough to post some details on my setting / system.

Bryan Lovely

I'm, well, Bryan Lovely, and that's me in my avatar. I got here the other day from the link at treasuretables.org.

I'm just past my 30-year anniversary of gaming, starting in 7th grade when my friend Vonn recruited me. I live in Seattle with my wife and our four cats, where I work as a web developer for a major educational publisher. I'm what they call an eldergoth, and I'm a hobbyist fashion designer as well.

Gaming systems you use

GURPS 4th Ed. I'd like to try Unknown Armies and possibly FATE or Spirit of the Century at some point.

I know this is primarily a D&D-centric board, but when I read descriptions of D&D play nowadays it doesn't sound anything like the game I used to know. I was going to say "and love", but even 15 years ago I had major issues with the system that seem to have only become worse.

General gaming history

Started in 1977 with OD&D (white box plus supplements), rapidly incorporating blue box Basic D&D, and AD&D Monster Manual and Player's Handbook as they came out. Discovered Traveller as soon as it came out, which satisfied my SF needs that Space Patrol hadn't quite fulfilled. Mostly played AD&D and ran Traveller all through high school and college. During about a year of being burned out during college I played Twilight 2000, MERP, Paranoia, and anything else I could get my hands on.

Simultaneously, I was playing all sorts of wargames, mostly of the SPI variety, culminating in year-long campaigns of SPI's Empires of the Middle Ages and ADG's Empires in Arms (Napoleonic Wars).

Post-college, I played and ran AD&D 2nd, then after a few years joined the Camarilla and played V:tM LARP for a couple of years, while also involved in a 2300AD campaign and latterly a Torg game.

It was dissatisfaction with the Torg game that prompted me to start running my current GURPS Space/Traveller game over the last year.

Strengths and weaknesses in game design

Strengths: Believable political/economic/social elements in a setting. Non-cliched NPCs. Improvisation from limited prep.

Weaknesses: Slow-moving storylines. Problems keeping all PCs involved.

What published settings have you used/do you like?

I think the only published setting I've ever used is the Official Traveller Universe, which I was never particularly happy with even in 9th grade. Everything has been a homebrew since then.

Major influences on your world-building

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings -- oh, c'mon, who hasn't done a pastiche of Tolkien?
J.R.R. Tolkien, On Fairy-Stories -- essay on sub-creations and what makes them work in stories.
Christopher Vogler, The Writer's Journey -- a guide to Joseph Campbell's "Hero's Journey" work for screenwriters.
William McNeill, A World History, The Pursuit of Power, and Plagues & Peoples.
A textbook on geomorphology I stole from my roommate -- physically believable worlds sell players better than fantastic ones.
All my professors at Williams College, especially James B. Wood (designer of the game Machiavelli) -- I swear, every time I learned something interesting, my first thought was "how can I apply this to my games?"

Froidhiver

Life Story
hi ! I'm Froidhiver. I live in Paris, France. I read comics (europeans and US), watch TV shows and waste my life as I deem fit (going out with friends and gaming as often as I can before life catches up with me and imprison me with multiple mini-me and a dangerous dragon-feared wife unit).

Gaming Systems I use
I've used so many systems... but I'm more attracted by the Chaosium and the Victoria Games Systems: I tend to prefer systems with minimal rules, easy to understand for everybody and (nearly) never have to look in the rulebook again. Yes, in case you don't understand: I don't like Levels and Alignements, so I have some difficulties playing D20 games which is always what my friends want to master, murphy rules !

General Gaming History
I've played my first game in 1982, since then I gamed for a loooong time with ADD and COC before finding that the RPG universe was getting vast at the time for english speaking people (I owe my english to RPG, how's that ?). Then I gamed with everything I could during university, and now that I have to work to buy games and food, I feel like a red dragon on top of his many rpg gaming books.

Published Settings
For my favorite worlds/settings, I would name Star Wars, Cthulhu, Pendragon and James Bond.
But anything would sell to me: steampunk, anthropomorphic, spiritual, postApocalyptic, etc...

Personal Likes and Dislikes
As long as the game has a good story, roleplay and ambiance !
Well I strongly dislike dungeoncrawls and psychorigid players and masters.

Strengths and Weaknesses in game design
my main weakness would be also my strengh: I tend to be ultramotivated at first and so the begining is good but the evolution of the world lacks dynamic ideas.

Influences on my Design
Chris Moeller, John Tynes, Warren Ellis and frank miller.

SDragon

I just realized I've never introduced myself, here. I think I introduced myself back when we were at Shadowfell, but since those archives no longer seem to be in existance, nobody knows who I am anymore. I'll do my best to see what I can do about letting the world know the true fury of....

I mean, I'll see what I can do to introduce myself here. Yeah. That's exactly what I meant to say.

Alrighty.

Life Story
Alright, I was born in Massillon, Ohio at 7:31 p.m. on a Tueday in the middle of a rather powerful heat wave...
Okay, I don't need to go through that much detail.
I grew up in the rural country side near Massillon, Ohio. Went through school, yadda, yadda. I was the nerdy kid and all of that good stuff. Through high school and right up to the present Shedeo (as he's known on these boards) and I worked on many a project, though mostly just the Zombie Slayers. I was the unofficial concept artist of the whole mess. I'll get into that in a bit, but as for right now, I'm an Art student at the Columbus College of Art and Design, and I'm still a nerd, hoping to become a professional nerd artist someday *crosses fingers* art Wizards. I did some D&D with Shedeo, but that is pretty much the extent of my RP gaming history.

Gaming Systems
Sorry, guys. I'm rather new to RPing, so I can't say I use many systems as of yet.

Likes/Dislikes
In my book, open mindedness is a must. Other than that... ehhh.... i don't feel like going into details much right now.

Game Design
Well, I haven't designed many games, but I do design many of certain aspects to them. Those being worlds and characters. I do lots of both, and thats why I'm here, to work on my world design and get comments and criticism from people who know what they are talking about, as well as the general public.

Thats it for me!

Books? I'm a poor college kid!

Piphtrip

Piphtrip

I only began dungeons and dragons a year ago, but due to extreme obbsession I have memorized almost the entire players handbook, and much of the races and complete series, though I only actually own RotW and CA and CS (i borroed the others from my friend for a week and read through them, and now I know more about them than he does). I also play Warhammer 40,000, with a Tau army.

I tend to have very strong oppinions and am an avid debater.

Gaming occupies approximately 80% of the time I spend not doing schoolwork, eating, or sleeping, and about 20% of the time that I am doing those things. I can pick up and become skilled in almost any game within an hour of playing. This has led to my being called the Overnerd, which is my screenname for several online RTS games.

My homebrew setting, Trin, has been in the works since 2003, before I had even started Dungeons and Dragons. It originated as a 5th grade reading project assigned after the class read Bridge to Teribithia, with the instructions of creating your own fantasy world. I went quite over the top, and thus was the continent Hynth born. In the 4 years since then, Trin has gained 3 more continents, and major development storywise. I am also working on a computer RPG set in it using the RPG Maker XP software, following the plot of the campaign I am currently running with three seperate groups (one of which is on this site, another on the Wizards boards, and the third being a diceless version, also on the Wizards boards).
