They actually use a similar strategy in Thirty Days of Night to kill one, but the vamps cut off the power before he could kill more.  I'm not sure if I liked the ending to that movie or not, it definately was different.

Now, to prevent derailing the thread...I haven't seen I Am Legend, but I really want to.  I heard on the radio that the alternate ending on the DVD is closer to the ending in the book.
Thrice I've searched the forest of sanity, but have yet to find a single tree.

Belkar: We have a goal?
Roy: Sure, why do you think we're here?
Belkar: Well, I just figured we'd wander around, kill some sentient creatures because they had green skin and fangs and we don't, and then take their stuff.

Closer, but still a significant diversion.  The big point being that the book is given its title expressly because Neville (in the novel) becomes a figure in vampiric legend when vampires become the dominant form of life, and he, unaware of their intelligence, culls and dissects them like animals.  I would have loved to see that element explored more in the movie - would have distinguished it from all the other zombie/infected movies - but no luck.
