Year 1, Month 11, 5th Day

Jakob, exhausted from his experience of learning the art of "crabbing," is very pleased to see his family integrating themselves very well into the village, but is concerned that the family has not built themselves homes yet, as well as that they are so spread out.  He decides it is time for the Kynwolfs to have a proper home, and picks a spot on the north-west side of the bay, directly west with Celanta's shrine.

Elben has agreed to allow Dasdon and Baffy to build a small stage in the Blue Crab, but only on the light-hearted condition that Baffy's children regularly perform to keep spirits up.

Brother Aval and Perita are unable to find the beggar who led the dangerous bear away from Perita, and both grow fearful that he may have been slain - though he has not been the most welcome presence in the village, it would be a great injustice for such a noble act to lead to the man's death.

The two ask Wynston to please be on the lookout for the man while he's out in the forests hunting for the community.

Wynston seems to be very pleased with his new position as Peace Officer.  He would, however, like to have a nice, shiny sword to replace the rusted sword he's been carrying around.  He decides that it's about time to find out how skillful these dwarven blacksmiths are!

Celanta's shrine is nearing completion of the structure itself, but Baffy and Dasdon both believe that a thatch roof would not hold well on the dome shape they've been working on, and they don't have proper stoneworking ability.  They decide to ask Bixanna if she has any experience with ceramic tiles.  This also gives them the idea of putting ceramic tiles at the base of the pool for added beauty.

Year 1, month 11 mid month
(Which to the 'VolkGara' (Mountain people), would be the Month of Water, in the Fourth Year of the Broken Door)
[note=work] trying to do this post while answering 94 emails that came in last night after I left early for a doctor's visit.  so it may be a bit disjointed[/note]

Hull, the Patriarch of the Genir family, is definitely too sick to move.  Kenndak has actually sent for some cousins to come help the Genir's, as they are going to stay the season, at least.  Venndak lets it slip to Wynston (while taking an order for the mid-sized broad sword he prefers) that Doph plans to build on the other side of Pastavol and the Snarulo hills eventually.  Venndak says that Doph thinks he can set up room for a few dwarves there, as well as a room or so for taller folk, in times of emergency.  [note=coinage] If we need to make changes here, so be it.  Hestia is a relatively old (400+ years) city-state south of the Duchy of Dernallia.  Hestia is one of the few places where they mint any coins.  They have been minting for about two hunderd and fifty years.  Their coins are worth their weight in that metal (zero seigniorage), and are actually made in the shape of 1/3 of a circle, with one curved edge.  The curved edge has differnt millings for the different coins, so it is said that the Hestian Minters have their eyes struck out to be better at what they do.  They make Silver Groti, Electrum Ingi, and Gold Venals.
The Whiskandir mountain dwarves (The 'VolkGara')make small brick-shaped coins (2"lx 1/2"wx 1/2"h) of gold and Platium only.[/note]

Venndak tells Wynston that he is going to have to make the blade in the hill-forge, since currently the smithy is for lighter work.  He says hecould make a decent blade down here, but the product will be better coming out of the hotter, enlarged furnace Doph and Kenndak have been building in Pastavol.  It will be ready at the onset of the Month of Solar pinncacle (next month in Dwarven).  He's going to make 2, but the price is going to be only 50 Hestian Electrum Ingi for both, just to cover materials, or the equivalent in trade.  He's thinking something with a willow stamped on the bottom of the blade.

(Imagine this stamped on shiney steel)

Bixanna says that she and Kenndak have extensice ceramic training, and would be able to create rooftiles, and maybe some white with blue ocean-stylized curliques.  She says the roof tiles will be light and wide, while the pool ones will be best at 6" squares made for duarbility.  Those will be completed by month's end.

Year 1, month 11 mid month

Wynston thinks Venndak's ideas for blades sound superb, but is a little worried about the price, as he has no paying job currently, and can only offer meat from his hunting kills.  He decides to ask Jakob for to lend him the money, and Jakob complies, and would like to own one of the blades as well.

Brother Aval and Perita are both very pleased with Bixanna's samples of tile, and are both looking forward to seeing them.

While work on the shrine has been halted due to waiting on the tiles, Dasdon and Baffy complete the stage at the Blue Crab - it's a small affair, but will cover small groups very easily.

Chalson has finished his painting, a beautiful piece of art featuring a large, multi-pointed buck grazing in front of the hunting lodge on a winter day, and it is now inside the bluebirch frame in the hunting lodge.

Wynston's hunting lodge has received some attention - Graden, as well as Chalson Ceng, have been hunting regularly.   Shaymus Stern has also been out, and the four of them have been bringing in quite a bounty to the village in the evenings.

On the 20th day of the month, Wyston and Shaymus find the drunkard who saved Perita's life, dead face down in a stream.  The only wound on his body is a small arrow hole above the man's right thigh - there are no bear wounds, and the arrow wound does not seem bad enough to have killed the man.  Wynston takes the sad news to Perita, and helps her bury the man about 500 paces north of Brother Aval's shack.  His grave is marked by a simple wooden post.

Year 1, Month 11, Morning of Day 22

Brother Aval is horrified at the prospect of the possible undead implications in his tiny parish. To his shame, he knows that he lacks the knowledge to combat such vile beings and is forced to contact those of whom he left barely a year ago. The Monastery of St. Ambrathas follows the church that he had a crisis of faith and left - only to be converted by the goddess herself.

The right course of action meant contacting the Monastery and ask for assistance if but access to the holy scripts required to fight an undead menace. Because of the nature of his history with the monastery, he must do this alone. He bids the hamlet folk a "be home soon!" borrow a cart from the cartwrights, and Vexanna's mule and promises to be gone no more than a fortnight.

Though Perita asks to accompany him, Brother Aval says this is a task he must do alone.

Doph delivers the 2 swords to Jakob and Wynston,  They are solid broadswords with very heavy pommels for balance, with the willow stamped on the blade.   Very easy to use, they look great.
Wynston mentions he cannot figure where the arrow came from that slew the missing drunkard, but that he found a small broken bow to the north-west.
Doph also says that there will be a few dwarves from the Hinjik Veterude family here by the end of the month.

Venndak finishes 2 locks, one for the eventual gaol.
Venndak is also busy making 288 nails, 30 arrow heads, 1 kettles, 2 pots, 1 wood axes, a bhuj and he has finished the set of six 'constables' whistles.
Doph has made 8 Kilderkin of Island Magic (18 gallons each, 144 gallons), 6 Kilderkin of 'Hopitup', which has the new honey (18 gallons each, 180 gallons) and 3 more hoghead barrels of Gastax XXX with mountings and taps (63 gallons each, total 189 gallons).

There is a huge celebration at the Blue Crab inn, when Gledna Stern admits she's with child again.  The first child of the Hamlet!!

Year 1, Month 12, Day 9

After only digging 6 feet, bedrock was hit, on the progress for the village hall cellar. It was decided that it would have to be a shallow cellar and gaol. On the upside it moved the schedule to completion by several weeks and cost less than proposed, as less foundation wall height was required, thus less material used. This afternoon the last floor joist was laid - progress was moving at a great pace!

Gunter Bumfiedels with some assistance from Kreb Vaal has completed enough of the Mill foundation to place the grinding stone, drive axle and waterwheel assembly so grain could be milled immediately, while the rest of the structure is built around it. Due to all the heavy lifting required, they needed a large work crew just for a single day's labor. Nora has prepared the first ever Para Bay Crab Cake, her own recipe, with crab and herbs from along the river along with flour they brought with them. Elben is taken with the crab cake and asks for the recipe, but Nora only winks and says, "I've give the Inn a special discount for them, once my bakery is ready to open - after the mill is complete of course."

At the next hamlet meeting that evening, Goskin Vaal takes the podium with a proposal to the community. "I've been a crab fisherman for 14 years and earned a fair income most of that time, until recently. Landsport is a corrupt bureaucracy with only those at the top having extreme wealth despite the booming trade in that town, with everyone else just getting by."

"Para Bay needs to be more than just a port for crab fisherman, we could own the crab market! I don't want to become that tyrant and own that industry, besides I don't have the capital to start this up myself. The whart needs added onto with several short piers for crab boats, several crab-cages (18 foot cubes of square bar steel caging able to hold a large collections of crab, most of which is in the water of the cove.)"

"I would rather not rely on outside lenders. My proposal is to create the Para Bay Crabbing Company which is wholey owned by the existing residents of the hamlet. We'll need to create legislation for portage fees, boat charters, harvest limitations of the Para Bay crab shoals outside the harbor. I know several fish merchants from Landsport, Dernallion and other ports along the Olive Coast far to the south and west."

"I know from observation and results, if we could get a crabbing facility up before the start of next season, by this time next year, the hamlet might be growing into a town and residents here would become wealthy citizens. How do you vote?"

Jack adjourned the meeting, and said, "We'll vote next meeting, we need some time to think."

Year 1, Month 12, Day 14

Captain Ragnald sails back into Para bay for a few days.  During that time, he seems to spend a lot of time with Jakob Kynwolf, at Jakob's newly finished house.  The two are overheard once in the Blue Crab talking about some sort of trial back on the mainland.  Captain Ragnald says that he probably won't be back for awhile, due to some political strife in the Duchy of Dernallion regarding the neighboring city-state of Kalsworth and a dispute over mining territories.  He asks Elben if there is anything he should need over the course of the next three months, and Elben says that if Ragnald can find a glazier interested in settling in Para Bay, that the community could probably use some glass windows and bottles in the near future.  Ragnald says he'll see what he can do, and sails off, promising to return by the third month of next year, which is when the pirate season gets really active.

Several of the members of Para Bay have made it out to Wynston's hunting lodge in recent days, and most are saying the same thing - "Chalson's painting is astonishing!" Elben took a special trip out to see the work, and has now commissioned Chalson for a painting for the Blue Crab.  He would like it so show the Blue Crab inn in twilight, with lights in the windows, and a festive atmosphere, and several people outside enjoying the weather.  Chalson agrees, and says he will do it in his spare time, and should hopefully have the painting done by year's end, but it could take longer.

Wynston is extremely happy and impressed with Doph's craftsmanship of the sword, and asks Doph if it would be possible to make a badge to pin to the top of his green scarf, with the same symbol stamped in the metal.

Jakob and Goskin have been excitedly talking about the plans for the crab cages in the Bay.  They have decided they will first ask Doph and the dwarves for help on the construction of the cages, but are unsure if that is truly their specialty.  They have all the plans designed out, and look forward excitedly to the next village meeting.

With the tiles completed, the shrine to Celanta is all but complete.  It could definitely use some decorations, and Perita speaks to Gledna Stern about possibly designing a few tapestries to hang in the small shrine.  She is sad that Brother Aval has not yet been able to see the finished shrine, but she has taken over his duties at the shrine for the time being.

Rugin Smarf arrives in town, a big, burly fellow who has made his living as a lumberjack, with his wife, who could also be described as of generous proportions. The forests near their old home have been rather clearcut and he shows up here hearing stories of lots of construction and lots of need of wood, which means no doubt lots of work for a sturdy lumberjack.

In addition, another drunkard has turned up. This one is also slightly insane, and even more disruptive than the first, loudly yelling at anyone who passes by, urinating in the middle of public roads, and screeching about ancient prophecies that state the end of the world is nigh.

Brother Aval finally returns from the Monastery of St. Ambrathas, with him an elderly gentlemen in the raiments of a monk, but a youthful look in his eyes at the prospects of a new life.

Brother Jeredah Tiddle, a learned monk, who became aware of the need for education in this new community of Para Bay, as well as defense against the unholy, like the undead. He hopes to spend his waning years educating the young, and healing the sick and wounded. Unwilling to play the role of missionary for St. Ambrathas, Brother Jeredah hopes to feel truly needed once again.

After a community welcome, the Stern Family offers a room for the elderly priest to stay, but Brother Jeradah insists, "Take me to this grave site, please." So begins the investigation of the possible zombie situation.

Brother Aval is greeted by Perita with a hug and a kiss, to his fright. She drags him to see the near completed shrine. Once on the altar he begins the rites to properly annoint it and chants a prayer in sync with Perita. "Celanta, I hope this pleases you as much as I am." he thinks to himself.

The village hall is completely framed and being plank sided at this time, another 10 days perhaps and the construction will be completed.

Kenndak Genir perched on his sky platform atop the highest Snarulo hill, begins to note changes in air pressure and a buffeting breeze from the sea, stronger than usual. There could be a storm a few days out, this will have to be watched closely, even so late in the storm cycle...

Ishmayl-Retired

Year 1, Month 12, Day 19

Brother Jeredah seems convinced that the stirrings of the grave are indeed signs of undead activity, but thus far, has been unable to find the zombie's whereabouts.  He makes sure to speak with Wynston about the possibilities of encountering a zombie, and informs the young man that he is not to engage the zombie if spotted, and instead, must come back and inform him of the undead's location so that it can be dealt with without risk of harm.  Wynston agrees, but feels a little miffed that the monk doesn't believe he can handle the situation on his own.

Goskin and the other crabbers are looking forward to the next meeting, scheduled in just three nights - he feels strongly that the village will vote to allow the crabbing operations to begin here.

Dasdon has been talking to Rugin Smarf about the possibilities of teaming up in the latter's logging ambitions.  Dasdon feels that he help Rugin build a great facility for logging, and would like to be part of the staff once operations begin.

On the night of the 19th, a steady wind comes into Para Bay, bringing with it light rainfall, and heavy clouds.  There seems to be quite a storm on the horizon.  Jakob, alone again in his home, hears scratching on the door around midnight, but by the time he investigates, there is no one there.  He does hear ominous moaning coming from the woods to the north, but assumes it is the wind blowing through the trees.

Year 1, Month 12, Day 22 - the Night of the Storm...

Kenndak can barely keep the signal fire lit in the gale-force winds atop Snarulo Hill, but manages to place the shiny inner surface of an unfinished shield to provide added reflection so the hamlet can see that troubles abrewing.

Goskin is explaining setup details for the crabbing operation when the north window shutters begin banging against the wall as the stop comes loose. Elben rushes outside to see a black, black sky, peals of lightening and horizontal rain striking his face with a stinging and notices the signal fire from the Genir's.

"A storm is upon us!" Jack shouts. Some people try to scramble to their homes, but the winds and sheets of rain make it almost impossible to move more than a few feet before becoming lost in the havoc. Loose shingles and debris fly through the air like Wynston's arrows, so Elben runs back inside. "Get under the tables everyone, batten down those shutters! There's a maelstrom out there."

Brother Aval trudges through the harsh wind, struggling through the crashing waves to climb onto Celanta's islet and the newly built shrine. He drops to his knees and calls to his deity - bring us redemption from this storm, oh mother of the cove! In these words I pray..."

Wives and children who didn't attend the Blue Crab are huddled at home in prayer to Celanta as well.

A stirring occurs, counter to the winds and the sea surrounding the rock of Celanta's Islet, then a rising of water forms a great cyclone that spirals to the skies above the storm. Though heavy rains still pass the cyclone walls, the great winds are forced into the current of the cyclone. It suddenly expands in buffets to encompass the entire cove, then the hamlet, then even to the outer isles beyond the cove entrance, encapsulating the Genir's hill manse and much of the farmland in the valley beyond the cove.

The storm lasts 9 hours almost to midnight. Exhausted the villagers in the Blue Crab begin filing out to view the destruction - which to everyone's surprise is minimal. Celanta's Cyclone protected Para Bay and everyone realizes this. Many people drop to their knees in thanks to Celanta - their true goddess protector.

There would be plenty of repair work tomorrow, but the residents turn in to their homes in relief and thankfulness.

Year 1, month 12 day 23
(Which to the 'VolkGara' (Mountain people), would be the Month of Peril, in the Fourth Year of the Broken Door)

Doph and Venndak are constructing a simple bladder pump for the new cellars under Pastavol, as well as a tomb for Hull Genir Veterude. During all the bailing, he was unattended.  Kenndak had been injured trying to keep the flame lit on the top of Pastavol, and was badly bruised by a flying shutter.  In the hubbub of trying to seal the Zirakil, no one had noticed the old dwarf's quiet trial as he prayed to the Stars and Celanta.

In the meantime, Doph is quite mad at himself for not planning proper drainage in the cellars.  But despite his self-directed anger and his grief, Doph reognizes how fortunate his family and the hamlet of Para Bay really are.  He tells Jack, Elben, and Wynston that he is striking 20 silver coins at his families expense, one for the Genir's to keep, the rest as family keepsakes.  They will all be stamped with the willow tree.
